Never bring a sword to a danmaku battle... unless the sword actually helps, that is...Comic inspired by talking to people who absolutely *insist* on having their characters use swords, even though it makes absolutely no sense in Gensokyo. As we all put it, it's like a samurai vs. a guy with an AK-47: the AK-47 wins. Though, knifes are a different situation: [link]
Though, ~YeagerD brings up an important point: you can still do hybrid battles like in the Touhou fighting games. In fact, if you've got one good melee weapon and you can somehow breach danmaku attack range, you can have a pretty exciting battle on your hands (even Diamond In The Rough's climax is choreographed like this). It's only when you go overboard with a bunch of vanilla melee weapons do you risk becoming a cliche.

Ironically that's like the one spellcard in which a melee sword would've been an effective weapon, since Cirno's blind spot is literally right in front of her - where she can in fact be reached and hit with a sword

Even worse, a sword in a Sci Fi. A plain sword. Even if it was a laser sword or something of the sort when you have aliens who make plasma blades from their minds, have trained for centuries, shields, giant death robots, can fry you with their brains, are larger and stronger than humans by a lot, and insectoids who have claws that can rip through the armor of a future tank like it's Styrofoam, have a carapace that can survive said shot, have breeds that shoot hypersonic acidic spikes, are living grenades, etc, as well as almost always outnumbering their opponents 50/1 BUT FUCK LOGIC.Β
Upon asking why he had such a hard on for swords he said "Sword fights are cooler to write." When explaining why swords are useless as fuck I should have simply listed

This is actually something I've considered. You basically make the point a lot better than I could. My character gets around the weakness of the sword's range with high speed, but when he does danmaku battles he doesn't use the sword too much, so I guess it's irrelevant?

I'm tempted to make my own version of this comic, Jack Diehard would be in for hell considering two of my OCs carries a BFG, one them can only use it in Ex mode and the other's version is weaker but has numerous deadly modes.

Hmm, interesting observation, and a very good point.
What about swords (or any melee weapons, really) that produce bullets? They could be used in a typical danmaku battle, and if the person using such a weapon were to get close, they could be used like a normal melee weapon.
It's like having two weapons in one!

Yeah, those already exist as enchanted swords, legendary swords and little known (and pretty damn interesting in my opinion) spellblades. And to elaborate, an enchanted sword is simply magickal in properties and merely being used as a channel for the user's natural magick when it comes to producing danmaku. Spellblades (or spellswords) are made for both usage as a wand and a sword which means they'd work better at producing danmaku.

You could have made an example where the Vanilla Sword doesn't work because it fails to do any damage (such as Medicine lacking any vital organs to hit or Seiga phasing through it)

What about in a spell card, you summon a sword which can reach much farther than a real sword (basically danmaku range); weight wouldn't be a matter since you're basically using a single huge danmaku.

I should have added this in the first comment but as a twist, the sword leaves a danmaku trail of some sort (like fire for instance) which lingers for a second or two. On harder versions, not drawing it to a close quickly enough could result in being flooded with a field of danmaku whilst having to dodge the law-defyingly fast BFS.

Lu Bu: Vanilla swords don't work. However, I use my pike in battle... but I added the Kappit modpack by Nitorisan44! Vanilla swords still work against creepers, though!

The only non-magic weapon that can compete with danmaku is an assault weapon. And that's even questionable.
At least danmaku can't be used alongside other magic attacks, unless the person has TONS of MP.

Pyro-Chan's sword shoots fire danmaku and can even be used as fire danmaku when necessary.
