In the MLP: CiM timeline, Dash is orphaned from a really early age, and instead of being brought up by a normal family lives gets taken under the wing of Firefly, an experienced flying instructor and Wonderbolts dropout. She and Twilight's mother, Twilight Twinkle both helped save Equestria once in their youth from an evil force, similar to what happened in the 1984 MLP pilot, Rescue at Midnight Castle. So when Dash meets Twilight for the first time, it's sort of a meeting of two families reunited, Twi Twinkle's daughter with the adopted daughter of Firefly's.

I really like the bows around their tails in that episode, and it kinda looks pretty and feminine which is a weird look for Dash, especially a pink one. But I guess Firefly doesn't know what to expect from her yet.
