Description Many thanks to ~philpem for letting me use his photograph as a reference. You can find the original here: [link]

Yes, I know this is inaccurate. It's not like I wasn't trying; I really put a lot of effort into this.

Well, as long as you can tell what it's supposed to be, right?

Beautiful rendition!
Inaccurate or not, your works shouldn't be judged beyond your own style, unless you're going for absolute realism. Your effort shows.

Take a look at how I do my fur, for example.
Compared to a photograph, it's nothing. But it's how I do fur, and I enjoy it.

There should be a print version of this

This looks amazing. As Cursico mentioned, the only major flaw is the pupil. Aside from that, the ears are a little small, and the fur is perhaps a bit too perfectly rounded around the face. But honestly, it's great, and I'm envious.

I'd say it looks a bit more in your stylized way of drawing than really trying the fur job on that beast, which is impossible to do unless you drew it in black, and inverted the thing in photoshop or something, really, white lines are impossible x3

I think it looks beautiful, and it is one of the best I've seen from you in the animal realm

May I suggest setting the full view a bit smaller to increase sharpness? Just play around with that, not the image size itself, but what you do here in DA, since you can change it any time :3

You could do white lines if you used that special kind of darkened paper with white charcoal. My school's got all these exotic art supplies, but being the unadventurous type, I generally just stick to good ol' fashioned pencil and paper

Ah, yes. Fullview's much better now. I really ought to pay more attention to things like that, thanks.

I waded through through literally thousands of photographs, and yours was the one that stuck out most

The only inaccurate thing I see is that the eye pupils should be slits.

Ah, yes. The printout ref I had was kind of small, so I couldn't quite tell.

Red foxes are special in that way, now you can carry the knowledge with you.

I like your version better, more relaxed here in a way, while the photo looks posed. I wish I knew how to do this, it would be great to try. Great job! I hope you do more of these, they are great.

philpem In reply to Starwolf-ftw [2010-05-08 23:32:45 +0000 UTC]

It probably looks posed because it was looking almost dead-on at one of the keepers at the BWC while they were throwing food in. I was stood (actually more kneeling in the mud than stood) about 10ft to the keeper's left.

The 7D's shutter probably got it's attention too -- the shot immediately before was a (slightly blurry) side-on profile.

I live in an area that's supposedly swarming with foxes (mostly of the "urbanised" variety) and haven't seen a single one in about 15 years. They're VERY close to the top of my "list of critters I'd like to see in the wild". Wolves (specifically, grey wolves -- canis lupus) are one entry further up, and cheetahs are right at the top
