Description a high speed shot of the F-18 Super Hornet just tearing up the sky. the unique design of the F-18 makes it possible to get shots like this where the air is crushed so much around it, that it looks as though it is flying inside a cloud.

high spped camera and mad skillz as a photo guy (me) also needed.

4-24-09 EDIT:

thanks to all for the nice comments and favs. I WILL BE RE-WORKING THIS FOR A LARGER AND CLEANER IMAGE.

to all concerned with the watermark: IT IS THERE FOR A REASON. I DO NOT TAKE KIND TO MY IMAGES BEING STOLEN. THE WATERMARK PREVENTS A LOT OF THAT. I USED TO SHOW PICTURES WITHOUT THE WATERMARK, AND I LOST A LOT OF WORK TO THIEVES. please respect my decision on that. if there was actual web coding that would prevent any and all stealing of the image, I will gladly remove the mark.

it looks like the plane is about to break the sound barrier. this is what it looks like when a plane breaks the sound barrier.

yep, its pushing its way right to it. forming the prandtl-glauert singularity. and to think all my life i called it a vapor cone.

thanks again all for the many faves. i so wish the weather would have been much nicer that day to get a cleaner looking shot. i think i have some better aircraft shots than this in my gallery if anybody is interested.....(shameless plug) LOL

yeah...i had to look it up. showed the shot to a friend one day and he blurted that technical term out. odd looks were given, but he watches too much tv.

Interesting shot dude! the vapour cloud is caused by a sudden drop in air pressure as the planes compression wave passes over its fuselage! Only works when the air is humid and relatively cool

SplitSecondStudio In reply to NinjaPickle [2009-04-26 01:49:22 +0000 UTC]

yeppers! humidity is your friend....during an air show for pictures, you hate it otherwise.

I meant having the watermark their is retarded and ruins the picture.
Just put it on the edge of the jets wing or something.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SplitSecondStudio In reply to YoshiMastar [2009-04-26 01:53:49 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i think an option to locate it on the page would be cool as we submit things. if i made my own watermark, i would have to sub a clean one each time for any print options. since DA offers theirs, and making my life easy....

maybe i will suggest that WM location as an option when submitting. they could give us what....3 choices??

anybody think thats a good idea?

I'm there quite a bit. They let me take photos for the thunderbirds a lot, but I dont publish as many of those on here.

SplitSecondStudio In reply to HandyCakeQueen [2009-04-26 02:00:36 +0000 UTC]

.....oooooh. now i gotta see them!

even though they have their own photographers, they do accept outside the team shots. there are also lots of air show based forums and sites that would like to see them too.

my "pushin it" photo was hanging in the team room for the f-15 demo team. the pilot was Nuke Joplin, he is from my area, met him during the show and he had me send him the shot.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HandyCakeQueen In reply to SplitSecondStudio [2009-04-26 03:44:39 +0000 UTC]

I'll get around to posting them one day. Most of my shots were prints that were given away, though.

They love getting shots from people who go to the shows. Definitely check out a thunderbird show if you get a chance!

This would be better if you put your own watermark on it less obtrusively, where we can actually see the jet.
But I can still kind of tell it's a freakin awesome photo. ...and I don't blame you for having a watermark.

Double-Echo In reply to SplitSecondStudio [2009-04-26 14:09:14 +0000 UTC]

Definitely! I'd love to learn to fly eventually. One of the families at church owns a plane and keeps it at the local air port (it's a Cessna, and a small airport), so I need to eventually ask them about flying. Also, I think one of my old classmate's dad owns or did own the airport, so that might be helpful.

I'm still considering joined either the Marines, Army (sniper) or Air Force.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SplitSecondStudio In reply to Double-Echo [2009-04-26 22:39:46 +0000 UTC]

being taken for a flight will give the chance for great photographs!!!!

dont forget camera.

as for the military, its all in what you want as a career during and after military life. getting a skill that will get you paid after you are done with the military is key.

just from personal knowledge, the army can be great, or they can use you....and abuse you.

the marines will reward you for what you give them. i have many friends in the marines and they work their asses off, but are rewarded for it.

the air force is what you make it. some bases like the one i am near, have gone corporate. other bases and locations are still the old AF with asskicking at heart.

any way you choose, talk to people who are currently in, and dont take all the recruiter's BS for what it is.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Double-Echo In reply to SplitSecondStudio [2009-04-27 22:52:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for that. I know a guy who was in the Army, although he was discharged (I'm not sure specifically what reasons and it might be best if I didn't discuss it). Since then I guess life has been pretty shitty for him. ~DjWolf

And from your description, the Marine Corps (aka The Suck, which would make this ironic) sounds best, but of course probably requires the most work and dedication, not to mention a bit of skill (which I'm sure comes, regardless, with anything after doing it enough).

Heh, when I was little I promised my mom I wouldn't "join the Army." What I meant was the armed forces, I think, but *technically* that doesn't mean I can't join one of the other services.

I just realized I know another guy on AIM who... well, I'm not sure where he is, as I remember when I first met him, I thought he was going to join the Air Force but he ended up going elsewhere. I guess it's working out for him, but last we talked it wasn't exactly the best thing he's done.

yep, it kinda like picking a college, or a place to shop, but its your life and time instead.....

you interview them...not the other way around.
if they want you, they gotta earn you.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Double-Echo In reply to SplitSecondStudio [2009-04-28 20:53:01 +0000 UTC]

And as Alan Troy says in Jarhead after they play a "little fuck-fuck trick" with Swofford, "If you want a brand, you've gotta earn it."

But about the "interviewing" part... that would really change a lot of what most people, myself included, might think. I'm glad you took the time to talk to me.

its from compression of the air around it, on the verge of breaking the sound barrier, pre-boom. but they arent allowed to bust it over land shows any more.

Finally some real photography got a DD! there has been a bunch of not all that special pictures that don't look very different than other alright pictures or they are crap.

you must have some crazy ass reflexes to get that shot

were they flying low to the ground? it looks like its only flying like 20 feet above the ground or something

i don't really see a problem with the water mark haha i can just go to small view and look at it with out the water mark but what ever i geuss some people are picky. if you really wanted to you could probly put a water mark of your own with your name or something a little more to the side
