Description
a high speed shot of the F-18 Super Hornet just tearing up the sky. the unique design of the F-18 makes it possible to get shots like this where the air is crushed so much around it, that it looks as though it is flying inside a cloud.high spped camera and mad skillz as a photo guy (me) also needed.
4-24-09 EDIT:
thanks to all for the nice comments and favs. I WILL BE RE-WORKING THIS FOR A LARGER AND CLEANER IMAGE.
to all concerned with the watermark: IT IS THERE FOR A REASON. I DO NOT TAKE KIND TO MY IMAGES BEING STOLEN. THE WATERMARK PREVENTS A LOT OF THAT. I USED TO SHOW PICTURES WITHOUT THE WATERMARK, AND I LOST A LOT OF WORK TO THIEVES. please respect my decision on that. if there was actual web coding that would prevent any and all stealing of the image, I will gladly remove the mark.

its just about there, but not allowed to these days.....its a shame. when i was a kid, the fighters could scream over us with full burn and shake the house.

well, if you get to the coast during a show thats held over the water you can, depending on who's in charge.

Wait why over the water?

the military is governed by rules that block them from breaking the sound barrier over land when flying low, as in air shows in the USA.
but, they are allowed--not bitched at, when doing the air show over the water. the Blue Angels do that quite often in the shows over the bay in California, and then up and down the coastal areas. the T-birds hit pretty good on the water in Florida.
i could not locate the official reasons, but it has to do with how loud they are, the danger involved, other crap brought on by wimpy politicians! LOL

OOooooh i see. :: shakes fist at wimpy politicians ::
Oh wait i got it MAAAAYBE they aren't allowed to do that while flying low over land, because it could result in an interdimensional tear, or even a tear in time/reality and and and-... yeah i got nothing after that LOL

It's as if the plane has flown through a barrier and into another world. There is an air of mystery in this picture, but at the same time itβs ominous, like the pilot has suddenly found himself lost in the Bermuda Triangle. Wonderfully beautiful, I can see why you would want to protect this piece with a watermark.
Watermarks are a price people have to pay when looking at online art because itβs so easy to steal, so commenters, relax.

In the time it took me to log in, this comment thread went from 8 pages to 4... odd. Anyway, for the laymen wondering about this phenomenon, it occurs when any aircraft (not just a Hornet) cross the sound barrier. The shock waves cause the air to rapidly compress and expand, and this basically "squeezes" a cloud out of the surround air; so, as someone else said, it is indeed emerging from a cloud, though an artificially created one.

SplitSecondStudio In reply to Ulysses-31 [2009-04-26 03:05:25 +0000 UTC]
yep, but the design of the Hornet makes this happen with them easier than other jets. most say its because of the way the air intakes and wings are set on the Hornet. the front of them is different to other fighters.
plus, the right kind of weather helps too. the more humidity...the easier it is.

true.....i just never took the time to make my own watermark yet.
but.....the mark is there for a reason. which i have had to learn about the hard way.

Please use a more decent one, which does the job without ruining the pic.

I fully understand, but why not use your own watermark? Write your own text over the pic, where you want it, dim the opacity, that's it there's several tutorials for that on here, and it's really easy. here's one example [link]
give it a try

i know how to make my own, but then i would have to submit a separate file for each print i offer as well. being that some files are huge, it takes up too much space on my drive at that point.

its mainly setting up your cam to max out its ability for shutter speed and frames per second, but at the same time, you sacrifice picture quality.
had i been moving with the jet it would be clear too, or the distance to the subject as well.

I believe this is a stunning piece.
Truly, the angle from which the plane has been shot efficiently conveys such an aerodynamic feeling, added to the surrounding deformation of air (that sometimes few people know happens when the plane is going at transonic speed) make this shot's composition truly impressive.
However, I believe a little more contrast adjustment and white balance could give this a much more exciting feeling.
Great job, there, congrats

yeah i am still trying to clean some of them up. it was such a cloudy overcast day...makes it so hard, not to mention shooting something that is near 600knots in flight.
dont blink!

This effect has no relations to so called "sonic barrier" and can be seen on subsonic plane. Usually this plane is F-18 only because most F-18s are naval fighters.
