Description
a high speed shot of the F-18 Super Hornet just tearing up the sky. the unique design of the F-18 makes it possible to get shots like this where the air is crushed so much around it, that it looks as though it is flying inside a cloud.high spped camera and mad skillz as a photo guy (me) also needed.
4-24-09 EDIT:
thanks to all for the nice comments and favs. I WILL BE RE-WORKING THIS FOR A LARGER AND CLEANER IMAGE.
to all concerned with the watermark: IT IS THERE FOR A REASON. I DO NOT TAKE KIND TO MY IMAGES BEING STOLEN. THE WATERMARK PREVENTS A LOT OF THAT. I USED TO SHOW PICTURES WITHOUT THE WATERMARK, AND I LOST A LOT OF WORK TO THIEVES. please respect my decision on that. if there was actual web coding that would prevent any and all stealing of the image, I will gladly remove the mark.

thanks...you need the right amount of humidity when they tear up the sky. unfortunately it gets too humid here, as an asthma sufferer, that makes it hard to breathe!

I love this pic, the watermark is there for a reason, so i don't mind it at all. It's so cool how you captured it.

thanks much!
once i get my photoshop re-installed (after an ugly crash) i will clean it up and make it bigger so the WM is less imposing.

It looks like this Hornet is coming out of nothing; like the sky is giving birth to it. Beautiful.

A F18 superhornet, in my opinion the most beautiful of the F18 and one of my fav airplanes! I would have a hard time imagining that anything blocking the view of the airplane in its full splendor could make the picture more magnificent, though in this case I am willing to reconsider.

not quite....just before it. they arent allowed to break the sound barrier at low altitude over land anymore. its a bummer.
if you can get near a coastal air show....take ear plugs. they are allowed to do it over open water.

Excellent watermark, really adds to the effect of making the picture look completely retarded.

watermark is there for a reason.
as for the pic being retarded, i can honestly say that you are entitled to your own opinion, however, there are over 500 people that disagree with you just today alone.

yeah they stopped doing that over land a long time ago. if you ever get to an air show that is on the coast, open water, they will bust it up.

I've always liked this plane, I look out for it (and a few others of course) at the local airshow - watching it pull off some incredible square loops and such.
Wonderful shot, almost looks like it's in some sort of void rather than normal air

SplitSecondStudio In reply to squanpie [2009-04-25 00:51:20 +0000 UTC]
yep, it can pull some wicked turns. be sure to look for lots of WWII aircraft at your local shows. being in England, you should have a lot of them. even though i love the sound of a jet engine ripping up the sky, the sound of a merlin engine in a P-51 or Royal Marine Spitfire.......now that is just perfection.

yeah, we had a great war display team, complete with commentry and fake gunfire, last year. From my point of view, the newer jets are always better, since they generally go higher, and can be seen from my bedroom window - the red arrows even fly over my house, on occasions. But it's still nice to go down to the end of the runway and take a look at the rest of the show!

jlochoap [2009-04-24 20:51:47 +0000 UTC]
In fact, it IS breaking the sound barrier , the effect around the plane is called the Prandtl-Glauert singularity, a local moisture condensation.
Someone said it's not related to transonic, but it is, even in subsonic flight you can see certain parts of the airplane (specially the wing tips) "emitting" steam, it's due to local transonic vortices.

SplitSecondStudio In reply to jlochoap [2009-04-26 02:09:37 +0000 UTC]
i think its more on the verge of breaking. they cant bust it over land shows any more. which sucks, as a kid i got to see the SR-71 bust it TWICE in one pass.
i like when an F-16 breaks it....they go by so quiet its freaky.

Sathoro In reply to ovvner [2009-04-24 20:47:13 +0000 UTC]
if it wasn't there, you could easily clone it out in photoshop.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ovvner In reply to Sathoro [2009-04-24 21:26:14 +0000 UTC]
then don't bother uploading it, or at least not in high resolution.
i have no interest in cloning, i came to see the picture, and having this huge water mark right over the only subject in the photo renders it useless.
it is a nice photo, thats why i'm pissed.. but i can't really see it well.

I don't think he had a choice, standard DA watermarks are just put in the middle. He was probably too busy to up load a watermark.

ovvner In reply to KaciHPfanatic [2009-04-24 23:06:07 +0000 UTC]
he did photoshop that picture, i'm sure he could have placed one easily in photoshop.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
KaciHPfanatic In reply to ovvner [2009-04-24 23:21:08 +0000 UTC]
well, i'm sure he thought DA watermarks were safer, plus, he did it for his own safety, he wasn't thinking of the watermark as something part of the appeal of the picture, so complaining technically does nothing.
