Description
Merlin and Glo were swimming near the dock, their heads just above the surface. Hermione leaned towards the water, testing the limits of her balance as she tried to stay a part of the conversation.

“How has your training been?” asked Merlin. “Our trainer is taking a while.”

“When you have more experience, there will be more moves to learn,” replied the Chinchou. “I just mastered Discharge and Signal beam.”

“Discharge?” asked Hermione.

“An electric attack. I haven’t tested it in a duel, but it feels really powerful.”

“Show me! I’ve been trying to learn more electric attacks.”

“Please, Glo, not in the water,” said Merlin. The Feebas was already swimming backwards to give the two Pokémon space.

The Chinchou nodded and jumped onto the dock. The Dedenne moved towards the center of the dock. She was on all fours, her tail wagging in excitement. Glo closed her eyes to focus and pulled her fins and antennae closer to her body as she concentrated. After a few moments, she opened her eyes and bolts of lightning spread from her body and lanterns and into the air around her. Merlin ducked deeper underwater, while Hermione braced herself to better take the hits from any electricity heading towards her. Hermione shook out her fur.

“That just makes what I’m trying to learn look pathetic,” she said with a pout.

Merlin chuckled as he swam back.

There was a loud bark. The three Pokémon turned towards it. A Houndoom was running along the beach. She slid into a lunge as she stopped, purple smoke was near her mouth. “Glo, is this rat threatening your trainer’s merchandise?” she barked.

“No, Grím,” called Glo. “She’s a friend of a friend who wanted to see my discharge attack.”

Merlin bobbed to the surface. “Good afternoon,” he said.

Hermione smoothed back her fur for a while before looking at the other Pokémon. “Grím, that was fast,” she said. She smirked. “How about a race?”

“The others can cover for a few minutes,” said Grím. “That’s all I need to outrace you.”

“Along the beach,” said Hermione. “Merlin and Glo can mark the start and finish lines.”

Merlin swam to Glo after she jumped in the water. “I’m sorry she came with,” he said.

“I just hope she doesn’t get on Grîm’s nerves,” said Glo.

The two swam to opposite ends of the beach and held themselves above the water. Grîm and Hermione moved so they were lined up near where Merlin floated. Both were on all fours. The Dedenne was low to the ground. One of the Houndoom’s front paws was aligned with the Dedenne’s nose.

“Three, two, one, go!” shouted Merlin.

The two were off. Hermione’s first move was a particularly strong leap. Her tail streamed behind her as she continued to alternate between leaping and sprinting. However, unlike Hermione’s previous races, height was a much bigger factor. Grím’s legs were easily twice as long as Hermione’s entire body, and a single stride moved her father than Hermione’s bounds.

Hermione closed her eyes and forced herself to move faster as Grím accidentally kicked a cloud of sand into the smaller Pokémon’s face. Hermione wasn’t going to win the race fighting fair. She put everything into a particularly strong leap and managed to get a grip on Grím’s hindquarters. The Houndoom growled. Hermione climbed onto her back. She’d just have to leap over the other Pokémon to the finish line.

Grím reared onto her hind legs and launched Hermione backwards before she moved at a more leisurely pace past Glo.

“Keep your friend’s friend on a leash,” Grím called to Glo before leaving.

Merlin swam towards Hermione, who was picking through the sand for seashells just at the edge of the water.

“Don’t tell anyone about this,” she said.

Merlin nodded.
