It had been a few days after the trek to the North Wind Aria shrine, and the goal was to reach Snowmelt next. The missing bell had added a sense of urgency. Someone or something had been willing to tamper with a temple of one of the legendaries that had been there since the days of the triarchy.
Although Clair was young, the urgency wasn’t lost on her as she flew above the group. Clair gasped when she saw the river. It wasn’t frozen over like it was at the North Wind Aria shrine. A man was watching in terror as ice floated downriver. The Primal Hoothoot could see cracks on the ice beneath a group of stranded brown Pokemon who were crying out to one that had successfully crossed.
“Is there anything we can do to help?” asked Maris.
“They need help crossing or for the ice to be refrozen,” said the Ranger. “I don’t have any Pokemon that can do either.”
“We don’t have Pokemon with Ice-type moves,” said Kennar. “But Clair can carry them across.”
“The Hoothoot?” asked the ranger. He eyed the large metal talon the Hoothoot was standing on. “With those talons of hers, she’d definitely hurt the Deerling if she carried them.”
“But she can carry the others,” mused Maris. “It’s better than nothing, and the ice could be more stable with less weight.”
Kennar nodded. “Clair!” he called. “Can you carry the larger ones? Talk one into getting carried across with you.”
Clair lifted off after Larry the Prinplup translated the orders into Pokemon speak. She hovered beside one that looked old and calm.
“I can help you cross,” she said. “Get to your…leader?”
“Really?” asked the Sawsbuck.
“Yes. Well, you and the other large ones with the neck fur.”
“And the little Deerling?”
“My trainer and some others are thinking of a way to get them across. Listen, some of you can still leave.”
“Grampa,” whispered one of the Deerling. “Go on.”
“Very well,” said the old Sawsbuck. “I’ll go and see if you’re trustworthy. They best have a solution.”
Clair nodded and gently picked up the Sawsbuck and carrying him across. On the other side, the trainers continued making plans.
“Sir,” said Maris. “Do you know if going into water like this can hurt a Milotic badly?”
“It’s cold blooded,” said the ranger. “The average Milotic would get really sick if exposed to this weather for too long.”
“And it’s the same with a Tirtouga, right?” said Kennar.
“What about traveling on Larry’s back?” asked Maris. She gestured to Kennar’s Prinplup.
“Can you stay steady enough?” he asked.
Larry shook his head no.
Maris sighed. “I don’t want to put all of this on Clair, but maybe we could set up harnesses that she can carry them with.”
“Who will tighten them?” asked the ranger.
The other trainers looked at each other and sighed.
“None of our Pokemon can handle knots,” said Maris. She paused. “I’m the lightest trainer.”
“Unacceptable,” said the ranger. “If you go out there, you could crack the ice more and kill yourself and the Deerling.”
Maris fiddled with her cloak nervously.
“Wait,” said Kennar. “We might have something else. Can the Deerling be convinced to lie still on a cloak so Clair could carry them?”
“Yes.”
“And then Clair only needs to grab the cloaks in her talons, once someone helps her secure the Deerling,” said Maris.
The group of trainers removed their cloaks.
“Larry can take care of himself, maybe a Deerling, on the ice,” said Kennar. “As well as secure the cloaks.”
The others nodded and handed their cloaks to the Prinplup who carefully waddled to his teammate.
“I’m not leaving until the children are safe!” yelled a Sawsbuck.
“Are we supposed to leave them on the ice like this?” yelled another.
“What about the future of our herd?” asked a third.
“I’m sorry,” said Clair. “I can’t help them yet, but the rest of you can cross.”
“Maybe you want us on the other side, so you can prey on them!” gasped the last Sawsbuck.
“I would never do that!” protested Clair.
“We can get the Deerling across,” said Larry. He looked over the herd as he laid out the four cloaks. “One Deerling can lay on each of these, and Clair can carry them across. I need you to tell them to be calmed.”
The Prinplup locked eyes with the Sawsbuck that accused Clair of trying to eat the young Pokemon. Eventually, the Sawsbuck looked away. Clair let out a sigh of relief, and the Sawsbuck urged some of the less scared Deerling over to the cloaks. Larry wrapped each Deerling in the cloak carefully, then twisted the long ends into something that Clair could grab. The Primal Hoothoot lifted off with a bundle in h talon and released the Deerling on the other side. Slowly the two bird Pokemon worked on helping the herd until it was all across the river.
In the process, the cloaks were tattered. Maris sighed and shook her head, then tore a strip off of her own cloak.
“We were planning on getting supplies at Willowisp anyways,” said Kennar as he put his tattered one back on. “We might as well get new cloaks.”
“I know,” she replied. “I still really liked the cloak, but maybe when we get to Snowmelt Shrine, Suicune will like this.” She revealed that the strip had been tied to form a flower similar to the ones on the Deerling’s head. “It’s not a traditional offering, but those Deerling can’t make offerings. It won’t hurt.”
