Thank you, this is useful. Would you mind clearing something out for me? I was wondering what kind of gun should I draw for my character if my story is set in the future. I watch many sci-fi but I don't want to imitate or copy theirs... I want to design something new based on real guns that exist. And I can't do that when I'm still clueless about which kind of gun should I base my design on.

I realize this is like a month late (haven't logged in, in forever)
My advice would be to research current prototype weapons. Guns are getting smaller, lighter, more compact and are built for much more customization than they used to.
I suggest to shy away from what you see in sci-fi video games like that of mass effect, halo, or Tribes. They still play to the idea that every gun is an tool incapable of adaption to different environments. Whereas present trends clearly show that there's a race for a "Swiss army knife" of guns. So I'd go with a gun that looks small, compact, and clearly capable of additional attachments or multiple functions.

The tip on drawing the gun first with the handle lightly, THEN the hand helped me like... SO MUCH. I wouldn't have been able to finish my drawing without that tip, seriously. 8D The tutorial also helped me fix my gun up so it looked like an actual gun, and not a sideways L. Hurr hurr.
