Thanks, brother! When I was first getting to know the model, the background was my first major trip (to Russia!!!) and a culture full of new and amazing things-- in real life, the background was continually verging on overwhelming all the foreground subjects... Eventually, things do get back into perspective. Thanks so much for taking a look!

Interesting nearly to the point of damning... How do you follow up on that...? So far, I haven't even been able to come close, but it was one of those times in my life where so many things just made perfect sense without my having to force anything, you know? States of grace are hard to come by, but when they come, you know you're there...

i know what you mean. even the most simple things have bliss. However I am still young and most likley have a ways to go to find that pure feeling of euphoria. Hopefully it will be sooner than later.

Such detail, such vibrant colours! There's always so much going on in your work and -LOOK AN ELEPHANT- I really enjoy looking at this painting, wrecking my brain trying to figure out what it all means. You know after a while I just give up and get lost in another one of your wonderful worlds.

Thanks so much, my friend!
This one went into extra innings because it ended up not just being about a fascinating woman, but also the time and place I met her in, both equally fascinating... That's kind of a lot to digest, and I appreciate your having done so...

Sounds like she means a great deal to you. Well it resulted in a beautiful painting and thank you for sharing it!

Once in a while I see a work of Art that makes me humble, by its beauty and message, such as this one. It speaks of two major elements: life and knowledge. Both intertwined into an indissoluble union.
First visual impact comes from the woman, who radiates with combustible presence, a certain joie de vivre with a zest of insolence towards fate.
Then the mind-blowing detailsβ¦ in the crying elephant, more than a guardian of memory: a living lighthouse. Could it be that its light represents the duty to remember and learn from the past? Then comes the bewilderment in this branch bearing side by side nurturing elements, from fruits to books and what, to me, appears to be vinyl recordsβ¦
I could go on and on, Samuel, such is the richness of this painting, which definitively generates strong emotional response.

I've gone too long without hearing one of your shining and insightful comments, Sarah... I love that you can see things in here that most people don't-- the elephant in particular. And yep, those are vinyl records, also the keepers of memories and magic...
Thanks for that, you.

Hi Sam. Yeah, there's a story, but it's not a very good one!

Confused; boggled even. I think I actually have a permanent full time job-- oh fuck-- this doesn't mean I'm a grownup now, does it...?

it's all over, Sam. Better throw in the towel and resign yourself to the fact that you are now, officially, an adult.
(P.S. Congrats?)

This is great! She looks so smooth... I absolutely love the wrinkle detail in the feet. I think the feet are my favorite part of the piece. And I don't even like feet in real life.
She looks like she's having so much fun. I would want to hang around this woman.

Thanks, Jessica!!!
She was born in Iran and encountered a world of trauma very early; a bomb took out the house next door to hers when she was two, and she spent the next year not saying a word to anyone; when she did choose to speak again, it was with a pronounced stutter; when I met her, you could still hear some of that, but she's one of the most erudite and intelligent people I've ever met... And, yeah, I'm crazy about her feet!

gouache eh? did you do this with an airbrush then? cause it looks almost digital, especially the background. Beautiful! lots of work in this one and it looks awesome! a friend of yours?

SRaffa In reply to thienbao [2006-08-05 17:40:31 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, Bao!
She is a friend, and yep, the gouache's primary means of transportation was through an airbrush...
I met her on my one and only serious trip-- to Russia and back. We became friends in the years since then...

that's awesome! i've yet to use an airbrush, and it looks fun, but hard at the same time. It's so great to see you do it so well though.:}

SRaffa In reply to thienbao [2006-08-07 18:57:03 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, Bao! The airbrush took me longer to get used to than any other tool I've tried; I had to get completely obsessed with it in order to grow the least bit fond of it... Suddenly I've been working with one for 22 years; we've grown fairly comfortable with each other...
I think you'd like it, man; the key is to get an oil lubricated air compressor; they're so quiet, you barely notice when they're on...

thienbao In reply to SRaffa [2006-08-10 22:44:11 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, i think i'd love it, just have to have the money to get one myself, and i heard that the air tanks cost a lot? what type of air is it btw?
π: 0 β©: 1
SRaffa In reply to thienbao [2006-08-11 02:35:52 +0000 UTC]
It's just compressed air-- oxygen. There are expensive and inexpensive tanks-- I dropped an enormous bundle on mine a couple of years ago, because with the size of the tank, it rarely needs to fill again, and the oil ones are much more quiet, but yep, also more expensive. There are definitely more cost effective ways to go, if you just want to get your feet wet, though-- including canned air that's very inexpensive...

You know how you can just tell from an artist's paintings that they'd also be really good at, say, sculpture?
I know you'd connect with the airbrush, Bao; you'd love the damned thang...

Thank you, sir!
The elephant is the enlightened carrier of a lifetime's worth of her memories; it just kind of serves to remind me about the serious side of this otherwise lighthearted girl...
