Sometimes I think of myself as an artist. When I in rare cases have the pleasure to see something like this, I know that I am not, and that I have plenty of room for development.

This is great buddy! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Per; I hope it ends up reminding you that you are, in fact, an artist, and there's plenty of work to be done!

How joyous and playful looking! I love the vibrancy, the strong look of self-confidence. The red is powerful, the wheat reminds me of harvest time and autumn, and also of a delicate side to life, of nature's abundance...and emotional abundance. This is one woman who knows who she is, and who lets her inner child out to play. Stunning, stunning.

Thanks, Lorri! It's always fun painting people you respect and admire, because you get the chance to delve into some of the reasons why; always fun to hear from you because, for one thing, you always see what I mean...

This painting has a strange duality to it. The figure is so smooth I would swear you airbrushed it, but the background is reminiscent of Ernst's "Europe After the Rain". A strange combination of styles...and very bright! But that may be my browser. I like the miniature elephant. Very cute.

You have a great imagination...do you see the whole idea before you start or does it come with time and revisits??? So difficult to figure your mediums too.

SRaffa In reply to EricNocellaDiaz [2006-08-02 12:53:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, brother!
I sometimes plan out the whole thing, which is often a mistake-- I find that, once the main subject has been resolved, my feeling (and even placement) of the background details totally changes, and I've often had to do radical repainting to accomodate-- I've learned enough about myself to know that I need to leave room for future impressions when I'm penciling the initial piece-- the good news is, I stay very interested in the thing right up until the last brushstroke...

EricNocellaDiaz In reply to SRaffa [2006-08-02 13:08:13 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh - I see...the overplanning monster...makes you overshoot and lose interest because it's already solved in your head...repainting is scary - it's not like you can just erase something. So your painting actually evolves as you go based off a partially finished set up in pencil? If so you have more thought than paint at times?
I sometimes will take a few days to a week planning how I will approach a sculpture in my mind before I even touch the clay. I lose a lot of sleep from that mental project solving...

SRaffa In reply to EricNocellaDiaz [2006-08-02 13:42:28 +0000 UTC]

There were pieces along the way that got me oriented to this, but it was a painting of mine called Paradox that really got me to recognizing it-- I just had the best time painting that piece, because so much of it was planned, but the design of it left room to form new impressions, based on the way the main subject turned out, and then to go ahead and paint them. It just made the painting really LIVE for me in a way I'd never experienced before, so I paid real close attention to the reasons why...
And yeah, that loss of sleep from mental problem solving-- here's the thing though. Part of the reason Paradox was such a joy for me was that I was painting someone I was in love with, and what I learned from her was that, the decisions I made about our relationship when I was alone were never as important as the ones I made about it while she was in the room with me; likewise, the decisions I make about a painting while I'm away from it are never as important as the ones I make when I'm there and directly engaged with it. That may sound like common sense, but once I realized it, I stopped making a specific kind of mistake in my life and my art, and I was ready to learn a whole bunch of new things...

EricNocellaDiaz In reply to SRaffa [2006-08-02 19:02:25 +0000 UTC]

That's deep. People will never truly know what do and go through to get the art to make the proper translation...I think It's great that you care about every little detail and spend as much time as necessary to make the art work. The attachment shows big time. "Live" is a better word - good call. When you're in my neck of the woods the drinks are on me...

Amazing as always, Samwise.

I love the pose, and the way the brightest part of the painting seems to be her expression.

Not statuesque at all, all very flowing, vibrant, moving.

keep at it

She's one of the people I immediately think of when I meet someone who's "world-weary", but never managed to step foot out of their hometowns... Ani's lived through hell on Earth, all over the Earth, and this is still pretty much how she goes about the business of life; with a dance in her step and a gleam in her smile. She's something, man...
