This is a beautiful face of paradox. She has such impact with a gentle stillness. I see tragedy and triumph, compelling beauty and loneliness at the same time.

I studied the Corinthian letters this week, trying to prepare for the project I was tackling with the teens.

What I got from the study was to set my eyes on the unseen. The author also urged them not to blend in with the culture of their day. They were called to something transcendent.

This painting speaks that message to me. I'm glad I came by to look in on your work. I pretty much have to pick just one at a time to take in.

What you can do with graphite on paper is amazing. Those were the ones I faved before I knew you.

But everything you do with color is hard to fathom, both technically speaking with the paint. And in all the details of composition. One of the verses I had focused on this week was:

"For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality...Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"

It is so magical when a painting speaks.

Thank you, my friend!
This is one of the really big disadvantages of doing giant oil paintings-- getting them photographed properly is a strategic nightmare... This piece is finished, but I have to get it out on the road to have a proper transparency shot-- I will do it soon, though.

I was just going to go back to the finished piece & tell you " your sense of color is soooooooo Italian" and ask for details, if you wouldn't mind, I want to study your technique...

Have you got any more details...?

SRaffa In reply to CageyButterfly [2006-03-14 02:46:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, this is oil, so the rules changed as I went along, differing from gouache, but, in both instances, you wanna start very thin and loose; you thicken and tighten as you go... layering up many, many layers of paint changes the way light reflects from them, and I actually think you see that more with gouache, but I've also found that there's a point of no return with gouache, and that layering up has this funny way of affecting what lies beneath; oil is notorious for its insanely long drying times but I've found its much more forgiving if you want to flat out change the direction you're going in colorwise, right up until the end... Was there something specific you wanted to know...?

That's very perceptive, K; she'd lived through more by the time she was 20 than most people ever have to... but she remains an inconquerable spirit...

SRaffa In reply to vietkatthroughlense [2005-03-14 21:46:37 +0000 UTC]

You have a tremendously perceptive eye; the painting in progress is partly about the isolation that can result from creative endeavors; but the model was only evincing that feeling for the moment; she has more friends than only me...

vietkatthroughlense In reply to SRaffa [2005-03-14 21:53:24 +0000 UTC]

the relationship between a painter and a model could be strong as the same time very fragile...

SRaffa In reply to vietkatthroughlense [2005-03-14 22:00:31 +0000 UTC]

Agreed...
She was born in Iran; when she was four, a bomb blew up the house next to hers and she spent the following year in absolute silence; wouldn't speak at all...
I met her on a trip to Russia in '98, when she'd just beaten a bad stutter; we've been friends ever since.
This painting is very difficult to finish, but some day...

Well, I'd cleaned out more than half of my gallery, and there was this lingering deviant id in my recent submissions, right next to the deviant id itself... My homepage was looking pretty tragic, man...
Also, that Holden Caulfield thing about playing the piano in the goddamned closet? My goddamned closet was getting pretty loud, brother, figured I'd open it just a skoche...

SRaffa In reply to flesh-was-sweet [2005-01-22 19:20:39 +0000 UTC]

It's one of four 30"x40" paintings I'm working on simultaneously. This shot is of a 6"x8" corner of it... (the fifth painting, also part of this group is 48"x60"...)

Wow....!!
I KNEW there had to be a reason you were taking so long
this is GORGEOUS....As you've been told...the look in her eyes is just ...i was looking through my NOW *grumble grumble* 432 piled up deviations and saw this one..and couldn't resist!
....she knows something i dont and its driving me CRAZY!
and most original with the moon, galaxy thing... dont know what this symbolizes to you...but i'm sure its lovely
and, i gotta say..i love her cheekbones....so well sculpted...a loving Andromache....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SRaffa In reply to KagomeResurrected [2005-01-22 05:01:28 +0000 UTC]

Andromache was the daughter of Eetion, ruler of the Cilician city of Thebe; she was the wife of the Trojan hero Hector and the mother of Astyanax.
...
I always learn something from my little Misha .
(this is just a small corner of the overall painting; I think you'll like this one, my little friend...)
