Hey! Is that a key behind the cage??

SRaffa In reply to zenatz19 [2008-07-14 20:31:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes indeed-- that's a key that the monkey dreams of night and day; the monkey dreams of freedom...
Most people miss that!

Just let the poor monkey out!! Let it be freeeeeeee

Yeah, that's the question-- can you do great work AND also have fun and see to all your other needs...? That's what I think we want to accomplish-- brilliance without tragedy.

wow.
the effect of the matchsticks resemble sparks like the ones that fly out of the corners of a construction area where things are being welded.
and the subject matter is thought provoking. is she trying to reap the divinity from this resource raing down all around her, something her evolutionary ancestor (the monkey) is unable to achieve?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SRaffa In reply to madbaumer37 [2007-12-18 01:36:40 +0000 UTC]

She's trying to reap some inspiration, brother; and the monkey's the aspect of her that just wants to go out and party...

Mind-of-wings In reply to ??? [2007-10-04 15:35:20 +0000 UTC]

looks like a photo or still from a film, not in the sense of realisticality, in the sense of expression, composition and mood. Its like you've captured the movement and time of whats going on in the piece. The colours make it better then a photo. Unique and interesting, def one of my favourites by you.

To me its like a distorted view of alice in wonderland meets hansel and gretal. The window in the background is definatley the thing which makes this. I feel as though its been turned outside in, so our whole idea of what is real is completely changed. I notice more and more about the piece the more I look at it. Intriguing visuals, the 'cage' is like candlewax, looks easy to mould and break, so I find myself asking why the creature inside is there, and whether it is a cage, because the females expression isn't one of anger or maliciousness. So much more I could say about why I love it. But then I'd start rambling.

wonderful.

I've been struggling with oils for the last 5 years, but I'm comparing this piece, which was done in gouache, a paint I worked with for 20 years, and it's sequel, Tabernacle 2, which I did in oil, and I think I've concluded that I'm a-going back to the gouache...

Fascinating symbolism in this work. Beautiful details and stunning colors. I love the poses and the contrast is superbly done. Excellent sense of movement. Mysterious and magical. You are truly a masterful painter.

Thank you very much!!!
In the next couple of weeks, I'll finally be finishing a variation on this same theme, called Tabernacle 2...
This was the first painting in which I learned to let the spirit of the model dominate the piece, rather than my premeditation of it; so this one was important for me.

Thank you! I was deeply in love with Naples Yellow gouache at the time, and when you cover that with a wash of pure yellow drawing ink, you do get this gold shimmer...

Gorgeous & Genius...& If dazzling visual PUNCH with subtler poetic human notes are your signature(& I think they are... ) This is NO EXCEPTION;clap:

Your work is so THRILLING to me~ and dangerously inspiring...^^

An aside~ we talking maternal instinct/Fertility issues here...That's what I got. "She" seems sad, and at the same time extremely dignified to me...

SRaffa In reply to CageyButterfly [2004-10-27 00:00:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much, little butterfly!
Dangerously inspiring... I hope that means your chrysalis is beginning to breach; now that we're hooked on your personality, we're ready to be swept away by your work...
I very much love your interpretation and hereby deem it correct; the specifics are here, though (this is pretty cheesy of me, but I wrote an explanation of this painting for another deviant, and rather than re-explain it, I'm going to cut and paste from what I wrote before):
The woman's a writer, waiting for inspiration... the matches are ideas, the lit ones are inspired ideas... she's trying to catch them in her hat, where hungry birds are waiting to be fed; she'll put the fed birds onto her head with the hat...
the electrical sockets in the background are both neglected modern technological entertainment (she's not interested in television or radio) but also a reminder that she's in some danger here; she's writing about serious things, life or death things, here...
the monkey, trapped by the spilling gold table, is both the wildness of the thing she's creating, and her own id, which wants to feed its own apetites, but has to wait patiently with her instead; it dreams of a key-- of freedom.
There's a sort of dream logic to all of this, and none of it's cut and dried, but that's a basic run-through of the ideas involved...

Cool ... I liked it too

...Not at all~ I should've caught that before...An aside~ in developing your own style~you were pretty influenced by the expressionists

Even more aside than might be appropriate ..Will you spell phonetically how your screen name is pronounced???...It would help me in my thought/writing to you...& 1 last thing...Forgive me if I've asked this before~ nobody as yet seems to have an answer for me... If you've ever painted with irridescent paints~ when you photograph them; how do you go about cutting down the GLARE( )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SRaffa In reply to CageyButterfly [2004-10-27 01:15:42 +0000 UTC]

Sphilr-- sss filll rrrr-- is a lousy screen name I settle on because Saphir, a damned fine distillation of my name-- Samuel Philip Raffa-- and also my birthstone-- is always taken by someone else. Call me Sam...
The irridescent question is damned near a Zen koan; I know it's possible, cuz, well, look at all those Klimt reproductions-- Lemme look into this, butterfly; I'll come up with answers for ya...
I was primarilly influenced by album covers and surrealists and comic books...

YEH It SHOULD be possible...
Lemme look into this, butterfly; I'll come up with answers for ya...
THANK YOU...I couldn't find the answer...I'd started to think of it an as a "journey" rather than an actual "destination"...So the Zen Koan comment cracked me up...Thanks again I appreciate it more han you know...Machines and sequential thinking aren't really my thing...

I was primarilly influenced by album covers and surrealists and comic books...
That's a lot of the reason I dig your work so much I bet...So erudite, professional~ an ARTIST'S-ARTIST~ and at the same time endearingly, remarkably unpretentious~and retaining an Artist-naif sensibility
