Okay, I've thought this over, and here's my ruling on it:
A professional photo lab will doubtless have ways to baffle their lighting to accomodate irridescense; until the time comes when you decide to spend that kinda money for the entertainment of we little punks in here who want to see your work, here's what you do...
If you don't own a 35 mm SLR camera yourself, borrow one from that obnoxious neighbor of yours who certainly DOES (and who's just been waiting for an excuse to converse with you) and take it, along with your paintings, out into the daylight with some either 25 speed or 100 speed color film (these are both slow film speeds, and slow is what you want, to avoid graininess in your enlargements, and to capture a rich saturation of color)... put your painting somewhere shady, with only reflected sunlight illumining your work. Meter carefully, and make sure that obnoxious neighbor has also loaned you a tripod, if you don't have one yourself. Now, with your painting up on an easel, take a look through the viewfinder (SLR means single lens reflex, meaning that you are seeing what your lens is seeing) and decide if you need to move either art or camera or both in order to accomodate the irridescence. DeviantArt is comprised of artists who know damned good and well that the original always looks better than reproductions of it; get the best representation you can by negotiating with the reflected rays of Father Sun (for photographing with the help of Mother Moon... that's a whole different pot of coffee)... Use a constant aperture setting (the ring around the lens) of 5.6, which will give you crisp imaging and still forgive minor errors in focusing; take three shots of each attempt with one shutter speed change (one properly metered, one faster than the meter recommends, and one slower than the meter) per shot; this is called bracketing.
Take it to Walgreens, give it a few days, scan the photos (probably at Kinkos unless your neighbor's really well resourced) and then...
LAY IT ON US!!!

Gee that's sounds really complicated; why don't we just make love instead...?

... You sure sound like you know what you are saying & I SUPER APPRECIATE YOU FOR IT...Just one question...I have access to a really nice digital camera- & somebody comfortable with machinery ---wouldn't that be better... I don't know anything about cameras...But you tell me that works better & I promise I will take your painterly word for it...& Really, Sam~ Thanks so much

I TRIED it before...At night - at my place with all my lamps and over-heads on & I got just BLINDING LIGHT...So maybe THAT is the problem...The natural light suggestion caught me by surprise, frankly...Can't control it...Plus I always tend to paint VERY LATE at night with insanely bright artificial light...That works quite wel, & then I like to watch the light move my finished canvas' during the day

So pics of them?..A sunny day?...Like Noon would be best I am guessing?

Reproductions KILL the essence of them...Like everyone~ I've seen Van Gogh reproductions growing up... But when I was 15 I saw one for real...& honestly, I didn't even PAINT yet... I had this overwhelming sense of standing the very same physical space/plane he did when he painted it, knowing where and how he would have done what...(& I cried... ) So after that, I sort of learned to project myself to the painting~like filling in the blanks for that ........................................ .........0oh god this is going to sound pretentious -but ( I don't KNOW how to spell it which may prove to be my saving grace here & of course American English does not have the equivalent for ~) je nu(nuit ) seqois(IF I goit that right- 8th grade French paid off... : )...Anyrate- it's something & it's not JUST about color, contrast & clarity...There's some life about a painter done by a single pair of hands that can't possibly be duplicated...Which is LOVELY, reassuring, and very satisfying for the artist ~and terribly UN-commercial, for the artist, as well...

You're so funny~ Thanks again

We could make love, absolutely...
Yes, take the digital camera outside; what you want is soft reflected light, and you're going to have to play around with moving the camera and the art to deal with reflections and such...

I'm never anything but delighted by everything you've written; I'm the LAST guy in the world you're ever gonna have to be careful around, I promise.

Wats the deeper meaning of this piece?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SRaffa In reply to allie21 [2004-10-26 21:03:51 +0000 UTC]

The woman's a writer, waiting for inspiration... the matches are ideas, the lit ones are inspired ideas... she's trying to catch them in her hat, where hungry birds are waiting to be fed; she'll put the fed birds onto her head with the hat...
the electrical sockets in the background are both neglected modern technological entertainment (she's not interested in television or radio) but also a reminder that she's in some danger here; she's writing about serious things, life or death things, here...
the monkey, trapped by the spilling gold table, is both the wildness of the thing she's creating, and her own id, which wants to feed its own apetites, but has to wait patiently with her instead; it dreams of a key-- of freedom.
There's a sort of dream logic to all of this, and none of it's cut and dried, but that's a basic run-through of the ideas involved...

Sometimes I'm only just annoying...
as in this, the second time I've cut and pasted the notions behind this painting:
The woman's a writer, waiting for inspiration... the matches are ideas, the lit ones are inspired ideas... she's trying to catch them in her hat, where hungry birds are waiting to be fed; she'll put the fed birds onto her head with the hat...
the electrical sockets in the background are both neglected modern technological entertainment (she's not interested in television or radio) but also a reminder that she's in some danger here; she's writing about serious things, life or death things, here...

you're not annoying at all!!!
thats amazing...i wish i had seen that....i didn't even TRY to look beyond the gorgeous exterior...BAD misha...totally like judging a book by its cover...wahts come over me?
That really is beautiful...the whole concept...have you ever been a writer/written? Because when you really really need inspiration...this is exactly how it feels. "COME TO ME!!!"
i can almost see her singing this song my choir had to sing when i was in eighth grade "commme to me my beloooved.." almost luring the ideas towards herself
thats so awesome, Sam...its not even funny -_- and you ARE so artistic its annoying. Grrr

They've only been around for about 10 years now; Grumbacher started it, and they're into their third incarnation of it (called Grumbacher Max 3; avoid the earlier ones), and that's mostly what I use. But I use Aquarelle's Ivory Black, Titanium White, and Cerulean Blue, because the Grumbacher Max versions of those colors don't want to mix down in water...
But this is a way to paint with oils and avoid asphyxiating on all the turpentine and shit, and it's HUGE fun blowing oil paint through an airbrush...

So you are doing airbrush also. I have never tried it. But I guess you can do cool light effects with it.

It's one of those things you know right away if you love or hate... I don't think it's ever an acquired taste, like bleu cheese dressing; just love or hate. I loved it right away, but it took me longer to be remotely any good with than any other medium I've ever tried.
