Description
Pin-up for my buddy Alessandro for his great book GUARDIAN. If you'd like to know more pop over and visit him and pick up the book while you're at it here: GUARDIAN ON INDYPLANET!!!I guess this counts as the first piece of art for 2008 that I can show for now. Used mainly brush and ink which I'm proud of since I think my brushwork is very weak. I also used ProWhite for added FX and such. I got this neat brushpen called a YASUTOMO WATERBRUSH which I found at a Michael's in El Paso. It's a fun tool to use-just fill it with ink or water and you're good to go.
Any inkers out there peeping this I'd appreciate some C&C and any helpful tips and tricks that this old dog might learn.

This is one really well done, complex work. I'm no expert on inking so I can't offer any tips on that end. I just like what I'd see. Although, does come off as a bit heavy, like it wasn't meant to be colored.

Thanks Jon. I'm a firm believer that you don't have to be an expert per se to at least have some kind of input as long as it makes sense so I appreciate any help an old dog like me can get.
As for the heaviness, given the tone of the book and also that it's originally supposed to be printed in black & white with greyscaling (not sure if that's the case anymore) I wasn't too fixated on making it open and clean lineart hence the heavy appearence.
That and I can't ink to save my life really. So all lame excuses aside I'm just glad it's not a total mess.

Naw, I got the brushpen at Michael's like the description says but no one ever reads those. Rene would probably say I half-assed it, huh?

Nice work! Has a rougher, grittier style than usual for you, but I think it makes for a pretty effective pic all the same. The way you go from shadowy stuff at the top of more detailed rendering at the bottom also makes for a very strong pic. Excellent work! Very well done!

oh, noes! don't take brushpens, they will suck at some time! i feel much better with real brushes right now and it's cheaper!
take sizes from 0 to 2, that fits.

I use regular brushes plenty but being the LAZIEST person in the world the brushpen is just twenty shades of easy to use no muss no fuss. I'm sure in the end I'll still use a brush here and there but for now It's working fine for me.

As for comments....
Vary your line weights. Try to give your pin-up or panals, a 3-d look.
Things in the very back, can be made thinner, while your closest lines can be thicker. Even the middle ground can be made to stand out too.
Your going the right way, just keep practicing with the brush, and you'll do fine.

Thanks for the advice Tod, it's gonna be a while before I'm totally confident with my inking since I've always focused on my pencilling before. Like all things I'm sure it'll just take some time and effort.

Did for me, time that is. But I would not change anything, how my career has gone.

Your inking is really cool in this. You may think your inking skills stink, but you really impress me.

Yeah it's all a matter of perspective. In order to keep getting better you have to keep challenging yourself and never be totally content with where your skill level is at. Thanks for commenting!
