Description
A gif animation tutorial using the GIMP program. So you just get an idea how I do the animations.You can see the animation here
Part two: here
Sorry if there are mistakes... If you have any questions I'll explain and add them here to make this tutorial more complete.
Edit: Changes in the new GIMP (2.8):
-You can use the "smooth stroke" option to draw nice lines even in lower zoom then 200%. (you find it at every drawing tool options dialog)
-You can add all the layers you need for one "frame" in a "group layer" By doing so, the "playback" will play the group layers and not every layer separately. (And you won't have to delete the sketchy layers every time or merge them often) In the end before exporting, merge the layer groups one by one by right-clicking on them and choosing "merge layer group". I have a script that does this automatically for all layers. I don't remember the link so just google it
-This is something that was in the old GIMP too, but I haven't mentioned it here: For every "frame" (layer or layer group) rename it with "(100ms)" at the end. If you want that frame to be slower add a bigger number then 100, if you want it to go faster add a smaller number. If you want ALL layers/frames to have the same speed, in the last window when exporting, choose the speed you want at "Delay between frames...100 milliseconds" and add a tick at "Use delay entered above for all frames"
-When you finish, you EXPORT it as ".gif" and not SAVE it.

Every time I optimize my animation then save it..it'll never put it as a gif ;n;

You have to export it. The new gimp "saves" only xcfs. You need to export it to save it as something else

Very helpful!
I was inspired to drag my gimp back from the grave to make this jinglepinglepie.deviantart.com⦠gif, although I wonder: how might I slow it down?
Anyways, thank you so much!

^.^ <3
You add more milliseconds when you save it (It says in the pop-up window "Delay between frames 100 milliseconds" - Make that "100" "150" or "200" XD)

Yeah, I figured it out after taking a close look at the save windows, but thank you! I might be bombarding you with questions in the future, because I have just fell in love with animation, and how truly tedious it is. Chapeux!
And here's one now: what did you do to practice?

First I started with my school textbooks using them as "flipbooks" XD I really liked Sailor Moon's transformations and attack sequences..and there was no cellphone with video back then to watch them at school (I didn't even have a simple video recorder at home) so, I would try to draw everything from my memory. That was the big "start point". After that, I tried to make something more original. Seriously, I never imagined I'd go this far XD
Also, I think that making sculptures, 3D things or just looking at dolls helps the sense of perspective. I couldn't draw a good body in perspective until I did a very simplified "dummy" with 3D basic shapes (spheres and cylinders) XD

You can go to "Layers-> stack-> reverse layer order" if they're just in the reverse order

that's a deviantart thing/problem.. I wish there were more categories that accept GIFs (by the way, I plan to make a new tutorial about animation with the gimp. I'm just not finding the time to do that )

Does gimp slow down the computer?
π: 0 β©: 1
starca In reply to SpiesFanTotally [2013-02-06 23:19:42 +0000 UTC]
It depends on the memory usage.. If you have a lot of brushes/patterns.. If the image is too big and has a LOT of layers...>v< Yeah, then it may crash XD

Maybe you should have optimized it first. So the file wouldn't be too big? Also, sometimes da is just too slow >>;
