this is really interesting! for me the center holds an alien formula that explains the rest of the piece. its over the part of my head that can communicate/reiterate... but it all makes sense to the.. the dark side of the moon.

I do understand what you mean. Hell express, the single image, is a pretty intense piece. The 4 panel is quite a story but still contains all the elements of the surroundings, original as you say. Yes, your take is pretty accurate, and of course it's among many thoughts one could conjure up on this one. Thanks

Thank you very much. Hell express, the original version/the mirrors/has always been among my favorites. I didn't create it to have the powerful message it ended up having--at least to what it says to me. You might want to look at the single pen and ink Hell Express.
Thanks again

Stepbeyond In reply to magentafreak [2007-04-19 03:07:12 +0000 UTC]

thank you very much. I can't take credit for hand doing the entire work though. The original Hell Express is here [link]

The original is still among my favorite pieces. It took (11X17) I believe between 40 and 50hrs.

I never realized that my work was so suited for mirroring--but because the way they are composed---and I do always draw off the page---that I was surprised myself when I first put one next to a real mirror in my home---so the mirroring was born.

Most of the people who watch me realize any piece of mine must stand on it's own---or it doesn't get mirrored. I do not use this technic to turn a so-so piece into something better---it has to be a real good piece that I created first---because I never create any of them to be mirrored---In fact---I don't even think of it when creating a work.

Still, the amount of work and the detail is absolutely staggering, and it looks FANTASTIC! Believe me, it was not in vain....

VERY well done!

thank you for the nice words. Now I go off to art school again today---a tile job---and a few after that---brother---it's not easy getting away from it (u know---people want me to do the job and I'm trying to end it once and for all. 20 yrs of it---I had enough lol)---it does keep me unsettled---but keeps my eyes so sharp. Thx again

that's very nice of you.

Some people here have done that (the insiration I mean)---others--even though obvious to me where a piece came from never asked me---nor gave credit for inspiration to anyone except thier own wonderful creative mind!!

Thx

yes I know---thanks---very nice compliment.

I really know why they go together so well. The semetry----very solid original piece---the more rotations on the stand alone the better---and my style. I have the feeling if I started a piece from scratch to mirror---especially 4 ways---it wouldn't work as well lol. Not positive about that though

This is great!
Your work is great to zone out on.
It is so intricate and there are so many things happening all the time.
It has almost the trippy depth to it, kinda like and Escher-esque feel that draws the viewer into it.

Have you decided how to frame it yet?

fractionalself [2006-10-10 04:21:22 +0000 UTC]

Wonderful, threading and popping details in the close-up. Great line-work up-close really pays off, and becomes smooth shading... really the best of both worlds. How you keep your attention to detail while keeping the whole in mind, and, I think, subconsiously and consciously, with an idea of the patterned whole comming into play as well... it's just beyond me. This is so much in your style, and yet distinct from other works in your gallery. Your shading is so effective that those blocks of white space around the center (bottom right of the unpatterned piece) really pop, and yet our eye assumes that they're solid, attached to the whole. Wonderful composition. This feels as much, if not more, like a place than an object... a detailed 3d work that's totally comprehensible to the eye. Great work.

I would like to frame this feedback---My goodness---I'm getting serious with you now---you have a gift for this---do you realize that? You think everyone can look at a piece and put it into words like you do? Nope---not exactly---far from it---I know I certainly have never givin feedback like this---I really am impressed.

Another thing---I'm positive you're seeing these much better then most---and I'm wondering why. Beter---more keen eyes? Viewing them longer---something ---either another gift of willingness to spend some kind of time on pieces---especially my type of work---would take about a yeaqr with Hell Express 4P.

Ck your notes

fractionalself In reply to Stepbeyond [2006-10-12 05:40:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the compliments as to feedback... my trick is watching people whose work I'm enthusiastic about and then letting individual pieces sink in for a bit. I'm inspired by your work and try to figure out what it is that's making me feel that way about your pieces. Generally, I find that if an artist's piece is good then the artist's intent comes through... and artists often think in pictures, so when I repeat what I see in words, folks sometimes think I've discovered something new about the piece when really I'm just articulating what they put there, plain as day. Excuse number two: English degree = a heck of a lot of reading, and an enormous amout of writing. Thanks for sharing your work... it's a splash watching you.

Stepbeyond In reply to fractionalself [2006-10-15 19:01:55 +0000 UTC]

so beautifully put. I never sent that note to you that I said I was going to---I'll get to it within 30 mintes

Now---and this is the truth---I concentrate on line---form---color if a painting. Rare do I have any meaning when starting out. As I progress of course I develope what I see---yes---I do see where it's going---but the decision once again will be the way it fits---form---etc---etc. They not only have a way of creating themselves but could have a thousand messages to a thousand people. There's usually many emotions in my work I notice. From anger---to fear---to funny characters---to sadeness---happiness---and so on.

You will understasnd more fully soon---no big secret---I'll let you know.

Oh---I like that---"watching me is a splash lol" You're the first to use that term with me Thanks---I know what you're saying---and that's great. I love sharing these

this is like a vortex.

what is written in the middle?

Stepbeyond In reply to Webb97 [2006-10-12 02:22:03 +0000 UTC]

hmm---don't want to sound dumb---but is a vortex something in the human body? Now don't laugh---but it sounds like that.

The writing in the middle is my name Seen the right way it's seen pretty easily. Most of my work is not really seen at all---in a way---here. I'm going to change that---I have too.

Webb97 In reply to Stepbeyond [2006-10-12 15:09:58 +0000 UTC]

how are you going to change that?

and a vortex is kind of like a tunnel that sucks things into it. i'm not too sure of the exact defenition. and im not laughing... HAHAHAH no no, really.

Stepbeyond In reply to EmmaMount [2006-10-12 02:15:42 +0000 UTC]

oh thank you I learned patience big time in tile work---you just have to have it or develope it.
You know Em---if I hadn't spent those years in tile I never would've created the work I do. I'm so glad now for that.
Everything I do I'm dedicated---or is that maybe slightly perfectionistic? Not sure lol

desmo100 [2006-10-08 15:40:44 +0000 UTC]

What an amazing piece! I like the shadings and lines...all the intricate details and what's going on (or might be going on). Lots to study here, as usual!

Stepbeyond In reply to desmo100 [2006-10-12 02:41:34 +0000 UTC]

yes there is---and I'm planning to use my printer to do these awesome prints he does. Not regular poster paper. And lol I'm going to make it very affordable for just about everyone. I have to do this Jean---people would get years of pleasure from these---it's an experience no one is getting on here. I'll keep you posted.

But I've had it with some of these eye popping pieces looking 100 miles away from what they are. My latest one---about 150 hrs plus---is a masterpiece in my eyes. Great views 4 ways--like getting 4 paintings for the price of one---it also has unbelievable mirrors---because the stand alone is awesome by itself---the way all mine are done---I'll never use miroring to make a relatively ok piece a better or so much better because that's one one gimmick I don't want to be responsable for. Use it the right way or get into more comp gimmicks---not me---no way---I work my butt off for each piece---and they connect so well because of it---

I'll be darned if I give credit to a comp when it was my exhausting work on a single work that yielded killer mirrors---never planned---but my style makes it perfect for them. Look at my older single pieces---like hell express---gaurdians---etc---never even knew about mirroring lol but again---look like nothing here---that's going to change.
