Description Commission for " 's

This painting was a bit of a challenge to me because I had some freedom in it but not much. I mainly went off the direction from ~flatlinedreams who was very detailed oriented in the way he wanted it. I don't mind this one bit because it's great to see something from a different perspective, this only makes me stronger as an artist.

So I asked ~flatlinedreams what the meaning behind this piece is and to which he responded:
"Some individuals on the Bioware forums, myself among them, believe that, if Samara were to ever have a romantic moment with Shepard, it would amount to a quiet time spent together, and nothing more. This is the scene that came to my mind, in trying to imagine how that might look."

Created in Painter 9.5 and CS4

Thank you Yeah any other scene would lessen the classy presence I think.

This is an overall great space shot. I can only imagine how many layers this took as well. It is very difficult to work within the imagination of another person but you've done a great job in capturing that moment that was described. Keep it up.

Thank you Actually only 4 layers. The window, the Chairs, Samara and Shepard on one, and then the walls and floor.

Ok, very cool! I've tried space scenes like that and it always takes me a good amount of layers just to get the sky. I'll have to try working on just one layer in the future.

What I find works really well is just create one layer and then use the pen tool to make a "selection" of the area you want the scene in. You can save this layer to load whenever you need it (in photoshop) then when you start to paint just paint in greyscale. This way you don't have to worry about all the colors you want to implement. Once you have all the stars and details you want just create new layers and change the setting to "color" then just go wild with the colors. You can created multiple color layers and blend them together. Plus it's always nice if you're not liking the way the colors are headed just start over without messing up your greyscale layer that holds the details.

Very good aproach. I've worked in grayscale like that before with my figures and I'll have to try it with my scenes.

Perfect work! Did you use screenshot as basis or draw with graphic tablet from clean list?)))

Thank you! Actually I had several screen shots open while I painted this. I was painting on my laptop I had the game running on my PC so I could reference the observation deck. I even started missions with Samara so I could look at the back of her head closely LOL. I had to exaggerate things to make the painting look better. If I painted directly from what I saw in game and screen shots the piece would've been boring. I didn't realized how dark the observation deck really was until I started working on this.

So true, your comment said it everything ! That is precisely what i would await from Samara. I love the atmosfere the feel of the moment. ItΒ΄s very calm, meditative and still emotional.

Thank you, I appreciate it. While I was painting this on my laptop I had the game running on my PC for references, I was wishing I could put Shepard in the lotus position. Would've made drawing his cargo pants a bit easier.

Seriously, who would kill Samara (maybe romanceable in ME3) for having Morinth in your crew? Just try to romance her..). Samara deserves more love

Was it intentional that you placed most of the purple space dust on Samara's side?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

stevegoad In reply to TheArtributor [2010-08-02 19:58:41 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, no It's just a nebula detail to draw your eye away from the center. I didn't want that kind of detail on both sides so it was more of a contrast between the nebula and the clear view of stars on the opposite side.
