I traced a lot in elementary, but I never put them on the internet...

Besides, it is much easier to draw than trace for me. Never was good at tracing, but it helps when you are an absolute noob

I totally agree! I stopped tracing in 3rd grade when I decided drawing my OWN art. I was acused for art theft, but I DID NOT trace anything, I merely attempted to draw Spyro and then found out it was art theft, and since blamed for something I didn't purposely do, I have been against art theft. I would LOVE to join this club!

Tracers = art cheating

Free handers= actually doing it right no matter how good or bad it is.

tommy-tonebender In reply to ??? [2008-10-28 14:45:11 +0000 UTC]

I'm not really anti-tracing, but more anti-posting traced pictures. Tracing is how I learned to draw, because its good for muscle memory.

... but yeah, it irks me when people think that tracing is art.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stop-tracing In reply to tommy-tonebender [2008-10-28 22:35:25 +0000 UTC]

Personally I've found it difficult to accept as a learning method, but eh, people learn differently, I suppose.

However, I agree with you that it is not art and it definitely shouldn't be posted here!

ResoluteAssassin In reply to ??? [2008-10-27 03:10:00 +0000 UTC]

The only time I ever support tracing is when it's your own art and you happened to mess up the lining or rip through the paper.

When that happens, tracing is your best friend and life saver e__e

Especially when you're as error redundant as me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stop-tracing In reply to ResoluteAssassin [2008-10-27 04:12:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I have saved a few of my drawings by tracing.

I don't even bother to try to directly ink drawings in the rare event that I use ink. TRACING ONLY or I will screw up and ruin them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ResoluteAssassin In reply to stop-tracing [2008-10-27 04:35:49 +0000 UTC]

Aha I normally wouldn't dare do it on the sketch either. ('cause the sketches always have this... nice soft gray to them that I absolutely LOVE =w

So that means a new piece of computer paper and the school's bigass light table.

chesney In reply to ??? [2008-10-17 21:50:41 +0000 UTC]

Holy crap, that made me laugh. I actually use this method myself, only I do it with my OWN drawings. My sketches tend to get messy as crap, so I start new, but print my sketch on low-opacity and re-define it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stop-tracing In reply to chesney [2008-10-17 21:57:46 +0000 UTC]

Tracing is great for your own drawings... not so great for other people's drawings

I should try that method sometime. I've tried re-tracing with a lightbox and a pen to make lineart, but I lose so much of the stuff that I actually LIKE about my drawings when I do that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chesney In reply to stop-tracing [2008-10-17 21:59:16 +0000 UTC]

lol, I used to do it with a lightbox, too, but the lightbox was too small, and like you said, it blotted out too much to see. I even tried shining a flashlight from the underside of a glass coffee table XD But the best I've found is sketch it, scan it, print it on low opacity, and then define it from there

I'm not so much anti-tracing. It helps your hand practice making smooth lines and basic shapes; it's a simple way to learn at the start of your art training.

I'm against posting it on someplace like this, of course. But for a child just learning, I don't fault them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

stop-tracing In reply to LizardPie [2008-10-03 02:32:56 +0000 UTC]

Mmm, in my opinion it's also a very poor method of practice. You learn faster if you just draw things yourself. It's pretty mindless to trace. When you reference other stuff, you have to think.

But yes, it is definitely not okay to post any traced work online or really show it to anyone at all.

I like the message, but I grew up tracing things in my spare time, which actually did help me to develop my artwork. But from tracing I went to referencing things. But in all honesty, this is a good message to send out. Tracing and claiming the work as one's own isn't cool at all. At least when I traced, it was for my own personal use and I didn't go posting it everywhere and saying, "ARENT I MADE OF AWESUM AND WIN?!!!!111one". Good stuff here.
