Do a DA search on any anime character and it's shocking how many entries are copies or tracings of existing artwork. It depresses me.

I found deviantART as a beginner in the fan art community, back when they didn't allow traces. It was pretty much friggin' awesome.
Now there are so many traces and copies of official art. It's just boring and repetitive. There are plenty of places online where you can find screenshots and official artwork... nobody needs to make copies of them and put them here!!

This is where Anonymous, if it's relevant to their interests, will clean dA when someone traces by harassing them to no end. But you know...not your personal army and all that but they actually do get the job done.

Put "motivational poster" into Google image search and you'll see what I mean
They started out as popular posters for classrooms and workplaces, and eventually people started making "demotivational" parodies of them.

I hate it when people trace over pictures, it's..........GAHHHHH! How about using that picture you just printed out as a REFERENCE? Meaning..........
1) You place the picture infront of you---much like a How To Draw book.
2) Get a hard, GOOD piece of paper *not traceable*
3) Draw it yourself.
...........People forget that tracing and references are different.......very sad.

Yeah, but if it were up to me, I wouldn't allow copies here either. It is a good way to learn to draw (okay, at least better than tracing), but I don't think any reproductions of somebody else's art belong on this site.
Tracing is just lazy though. @__@

When I use references, I use it the way my teachers told us to: it's for learning a pose or clothing, looks, body type, things like that.
Never cloneing though.

Because I can't draw very well, I try to draw things exactly the same as on the page, using a picture as a reference but because I'm such a horrible drawer, it comes out different every time anyway! xD

I didn't say reffy's were bad, dude. Plus, you just said it comes out differently anyway, nothing to worry about.
There's just people out there that copy it right down to the nitty grity. But, if their not tracing, it's not such a big deal---I mean, if it's used for learning, cool. But, it's even better if it has their own style in there.

Life drawing and using refs is the best way to learn to draw. Any good teacher will tell you that.
I wish deviantART would make more of an effort to help people instead of letting this art theft go on (while simultaneously allowing the "artists" in question to screw themselves over by learning the hard way).
