(gallery folder )

"Hi, I'm Julie, I'm here to see Natalie."

"Oh, I assume you're the one who called about visiting her -- I don't know who you talked to, but did they say much about her treatment?"

"No, just that it was kind of unorthodox."

"That's ... a good way to describe it. I'll go tell the staff that she has a visitor, in the mean time you'll need to sign in and empty your pockets into this basket."

---

"Oh my god, what happened!? I heard you wrecked your car, but I thought you weren't hurt!"

πŸ˜… "I ... wasn't hurt in the crash, this is part of my therapy."

😨 "They put you in casts even though you didn't break anything? This is insane, what the hell kind of therapy is this?"

"It's a long story, but it's actually not that bad."

"Not that bad!? You're in a body cast, how do you do anything for yourself with your arms stuck like that? You can't even ..."

"I know, it was really frustrating at first, not being in control and needing help with everything, but that's kind of the point I guess. It's weird, but I can't remember the last time I felt ... safe. Even though I'm totally helpless."

"They can't keep you like this, I'm going to get you out of here, I'm going to ..."

"No. Please don't. I'm okay, really. Trust me." She trailed off, then continued, "I just wish ..."

Natalie glanced back sheepishly at the nurse behind her, who looked a little conflicted for a moment, then said "Fine, but don't tell anyone. I can maybe give you twenty minutes alone, but don't even count on that." The nurse grabbed the handles of Natalie's wheelchair and looked at Julie. "Follow me."

I kind of rushed writing the dialogue, but I wanted to post this as soon as possible after rendering it

Rendered on a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti using the NVIDIA Iray engine, in the public beta version of DAZ Studio 4.11. I set a 97.5% convergence threshold for this image, which required 6 hours, 32 minutes, 11 seconds, and 4,392 Iray iterations.

It was kind of a pain to get everything working with rendering this on a RTX 2080 Ti. DAZ Studio 4.10 ships with a version of Iray that is too old to support that GPU, so one has to use the beta version of 4.11, and GPU rendering is completely broken under NVIDIA driver version 418.81, as described in a post by 'levicki' on forums.geforce.com/default/top… . That was extremely annoying to troubleshoot, since this failure just shows in the DAZ Studio logs as "CUDA device 0 (GeForce RTX 2080 Ti): an illegal instruction was encountered (while launching CUDA renderer in core_renderer_wf.cpp:437)", after which the Iray engine falls back to CPU rendering. Everything was fine after downgrading to driver version 417.71 though.

How much did it take to render the image ?

Unfortunately, I don't know. DAZ Studio keeps a single log file, and new log entries overwrite old ones when the file becomes too large. I rendered this, then played with many other scenes right afterward, so the time/iteration/convergence information for this image was overwritten.

edit: Not sure why I said this here -- I apparently confused this with another image that I rendered, which I haven't posted yet. The time/iteration/convergence information is in included in the description above.

I definitely will. It's hard to decide which direction to explore first though, and it's always more tempting to play around with completely new characters/ideas.

Thanks for providing some background infos of the making of this picture!

If you didn't mentioned that you had rushed the dialogue, I didn't noticed it.

It seems Natalie's condition has get quickly better.

Thank you! I may want to do at least one picture that takes place between the initial one and this scene, showing her struggling with her new life in her casts. It would have made much more sense to do that kind of picture before this one, but once I had the idea for this scene, I couldn't resist doing it right away.

Why not blindfolding her so she needs to trust others "blindly"
