Description
EDIT: Gave it a fresh new look with new fur examples and more explanations. If someone wanted good fur results in a fast, easy way, this tutorial helps. It really is easy, ANYONE can do it.
This tutorial isn't perfect, but it can sure put your foot in the door to help you get great fur results. Fur is the hardest part of drawing any animal, but it doesn't have to be a pain.
This tutorial can be used with any paint program; GIMP, Photoshop, Painter, MS Paint, etc.. For BEST results, use a digital drawing pad. Pressure sensitivity is key.
Enjoy! ^_^

woooow very nice 1, thanks for sharing, i always tried to do my shadows over my highlights with a thin brush, and i never thought of doing underneath. Are there any cool brushes that you use, or do you just use the default sort of 1?

Well, for this tutorial there is just a round and soft brushes, but I use my own now and a few different ones, mixed with my own settings.

I have GIMP, I know for a fact that it has the pressure sensitivity, but I have Ubuntu on my computer and for some reason, it does work.

My tablet works, it does, I treat it like a member of my family (except with respect) just the pressure sensitivity...

I have never used one, but I know a lot of artists who do use it like it. You can't go wrong with Wacom brand either.

sugarpoultry In reply to Makoce [2011-02-26 06:30:37 +0000 UTC]
I would suggest using a much lighter color for the highlight layer, and make sure the tip of the hair is lighter than the end of it. You know what I mean? Like each strand has a semi-gradient look to it. That will help it look like the fur is really coming out at ya.

Makoce In reply to sugarpoultry [2011-02-27 04:50:40 +0000 UTC]
Okaay, thank you c: What about the shape of the hair when youre doing the hair outlines? If you get what I mean, mine always come out like random weird awkward triangles, and if i scribble, they come out like random squiggly "m"'s
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sugarpoultry In reply to Makoce [2011-02-27 16:01:05 +0000 UTC]
The hair of the outline has to be shaped the way you want the highlighted fur to be. This all takes patience. Even if takes you a whole 5 seconds just to do one texture, as long as it looks right, you'll like the results. Don't forget to use fur references!

I faved ths not too long ago as I am having trouble with my anthro drawings, effective fur being one of the problems. Following this I was able to make stunning fur texture within no time. Thanks for posting this and making it easy. You got any advice on how to setup base/shadow/highlight combos? I noticed a few refernaces for brown, white grey and black. But I get OC bios that also depict red on black for exsample.

sugarpoultry In reply to MoonandSky [2010-12-08 22:07:24 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm explaining those can be complex. well, I do eventually plan on making a tutorial for a bunch of stuff. Sorry I don't have much now, but keep searching.
For other colors besides the ones in the tut, just make sure you have a plain color, the dark color for texture, and the highlight (the highlight is the exact color you want it to look like).

Interesting tutorial,I think it's easy
Just small question: Can I follow the same steps even if I'm going to draw a very small fur? like the fur on a cougar or the small fur on the nose of a tiger?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sugarpoultry In reply to alaa9jo [2010-12-07 18:35:50 +0000 UTC]
No, you wouldn't. For short hair texture the hairs are all flat and very close together. This is more for fluffy thick fur.
