Description
Well. I bought a dvd of silence of the lambs (fantastic film) and got inspired, so here is a painting of everybody's favourite cannabilistic sociopathic serial killer: Hannibal Lector (Anthony Hopkins)I had great troubles with Crapcam on this. Uploaded onto my comp and pixellated beyond belief, I had to use Smart blur and blur tool and clone tool and colour adjustment etc...which is why it now looks a bit odd.
I painted this picture with Acrylics and a nice Chianti....sluuuuurps.
New edit*
I'd spelled the man's name wrong in the title, which frankly made me look a bit stupid. It has been corrected!

He is a bit frightening in this part, oh and where he was almost butt naked in Beowulf - that was terrifying!

Wow...he's like one of my fac character, you represented him very well, I love the feeling of the whole painting! This is very inspiring! Makes me want to do more sfx of cannibalism!

Thank you. He's one of my faves too. Just the quiet, thoughtful air he has contrasted with moments of shocking brutality that he's capable of, makes this one heck of a character. I'm glad I've inspired you to cannibalistic heights

Cheers! I really love this character. I suppose he was so startling as he was extremely intelligent, but just happened to be a serial killer.

Woah. Great painting. It makes me think that if this had sound, it'd be silent (if you know what I mean) The pose and expression are just... amazing! Really captures the true essence of Hannibal.

Thank you! I think I know what you mean. Everything goes still after a moment of horrific intensity and I always thought he was retreating back into his past when I saw this scene. The bit where he's suddenly aware of sobbing from one of the officer's he's attacked and seems to jump out of his reverie is an image that sticks with me.

Thank you so much. This scene really brought to home how completely worrying this character was - to be able to detach himself so completely from his killing frenzy.
I'm going to have to have a nose at DD now. It's all incredibly exciting

It seems though you got lotza details on the face and not the rest of the body. I have also factored in the perspective, depth and slight motion, yet I think they require bit more attention...
The arms currently look like it's in under-painting stage and maybe bit misplaced too.
The details on face espeically eyes are subtle and effective. Did you perhaps referenced the top bust from a picture?

sullen-skrewt In reply to Rollers-Studio [2008-02-27 11:53:23 +0000 UTC]
Unfortunately, the screencap I worked from was blurry on the torso. I couldn't read the ID numbers on his shirt. Also because the picture I took was with my old and seriously crappy camera, I had to blur some of the image so it didn't look so pixellated. Funnily enough, I did a second painting of this with a better screencap and the body was good, but the face wasn't great. You're right about the arms though, they look flat, especially his right arm. I'll be honest with you, I love painting faces, but I lose interest in everything else - it's something I need to address

Thank you. I agree, he's one of those fictional characters that burrows its way into the consciousness.
CrapCam is the name I gave my old camera - as it was Crap. I mentioned CrapCam whenever my paintings turned out to be pixellated and the like

Oh, stupid me, but is there a way of taking pictures from the TV? besides taking a picture of the tv, if that makes sense? Tv has so much good reference material!

sullen-skrewt In reply to Gilray [2008-02-27 12:11:38 +0000 UTC]
There is probably is a way that involves numerous cables and technical ability - both of which I lack! I usually rely on images found off the net I know what you mean about capturing stuff off tv though. I wonder if you would have to get access to the channels on your computer and then find a way to grab screencaps from there? Will have to look into that.

I was on the front page when I saw a thumbnail of this in daily deviations. The first thought that came to my mind was, "Wow...that looks kind of like Anthony Hopkins..." *slaps forehead* Then I read the title. I love this movie.
And this is a wonderful piece. It has the grungy, almost dirty feel to it, which is present in pretty much all of "Silence of the Lambs". And his eyes have that sunken in and weary, yet dreamy and distant, look to them that are very characteristic of Hannibal Lector. Poor fellow. He was a genius...but an insane one.
Of course, most geniuses are somewhat insane. We have Van Gogh chopping off his own ear. And DaVinci sorting through bodies at the morgue to dissect them.
Okay, rambling stops right about...now.

Woohoo! my painting was immortalized in Daily Deviations? Excellent. I love this movie too, and the character is just to die for.
There does seem to be some kind of hidden drive to push the boat out regarding genius, regardless of societies boundaries. Da Vinci was one of those unstoppable minds thirsty for knowledge - I suppose delving into dead bodies heightened his understanding of anatomy, but still...
Van Gogh was a tortured soul whose intensity landed him in hot water quite a bit. Apparently when he shot himself, it took a couple of days for him to pass away...tortured to the last breath- poor sod.
