Description Another beauty.

Ok, so I came home from school today, had a nice hot lemon and honey drink ( I have a cold, it sucks ), pulled up my tablet and started painting this Isn't that great, I can't believe I took such a long break from this art business ;-P!!

Anyway, I really love the way this piece turned out. I played around with some textured overlays, which really gives the nebula less of a painted look. And makes it look, well, textured I like.

Interpret the name as you will Enjoy <3

Edit: I decided I didn't like the texture overlay, so I removed it and ended up adding a bit more detail to the piece as well. Plain painted style > texture overlays of rock or bark or whatever it was.

Awesome work

It's not that difficult, it's just simplistic tricks with the dodge, burn, luminance and multiply layer blend modes using simplistically altered nebula photos as the base. This kind of "art" takes neither skill nor effort to produce.

Mipsus In reply to ??? [2009-10-06 08:19:19 +0000 UTC]

That sure is some heavy abuse with the dodge and burn overlays...I think NASA might want their source material back though...good job though with the attempt to obscure teh sources, some neat tricks there...but then, it never really takes much to fool the kiddies on DA. I hope you don't ever plan to use stuff like that to try and get a job as a graphic designer though...you'll likely get verbally ripped apart and shown the door if who ever they have in charge is any good.

Hey, I thought the same thing, but at least I looked for some proof before I made a blatant statement. I thought that it resembled a picture that I'd seen in a library book. Turns out that it's not a direct rip from the "Pillars of Creation" photo from the Eagle Nebula; it has more pillars and differently shaped columns. I've got the photo right in front of me, and you can see for yourself in a Google Images search. Now, unless you know of another photo that this resembles, I believe you have no real case left. Care to counter?

He says it himself what it is and how he's making them in several of his other pieces. And as I said, he's doing a good job of obscuring his sources. He's not taking blatantly recognizable nebula photos like the Eagle Nebula (that pretty much EVERYONE knows about), he's taking lesser known nebula shots and even altering them in various ways, warping, sizing, combining, etc. In some of his pictures he's even taking lesser known rendering work from others and mucking it up to make it look like it's his.

I just went through every single piece of Space Art in sumopiggy's gallery. Nowhere does s/he talk about obscuring photos or others' works. The only time s/he uses any form of work that isn't his/her own is during collabs. If you know so much about this, then where is your proof? Can you provide one of these seemingly altered photos or works?

Without having any background knowledge about the genre of space art (as it seems) you evaluate him and his work, also attacking other people who are impressed by it. You are right that its easy to take NASA photos, edit them slightly and upload them as own works. But that's not the case. This "kind of art" how you call it is not as easy as you might think. The key is, not to use NASA photos or stuff but creating your own visions. Thats comparable to photorealistic paintings. What do you do then? Blaming the artist that he used a photo althought he painted everything from scratch?

Its nice that you are participating to this community here, but you should try to see the other side. In fact you are not uploading your own art so nobody can evaluate you. That is a pretty comfortable basis to attack others.

The picture got a DD, one of dA's highest awards/honours. I'm trying to check the pictures I'm going to feature as a DD. If you have a problem with my choices, you always can note me.

And I would please you to contact me direct, if you want to keep on discussing the topic. The picture should not be the place for something like this. Thanks a lot for your understanding!

LOL, you really are an amateur of the highest order if you couldn't recognize the work as obvious poser class bullshit. I mean, have you even taken the bother to *LOOK* at any of his art? He screws up on several of these pieces, openly admitting to the fact that he's just using layer blend modes over simplistically altered photos. He learned ~real~ quick though that your average Devian-Tartlet 12 year old can't read though and soon started taking full credit for the work. As I said though, you really are a complete amateur in the realm of digital art if you couldn't even tell just by looking. As far as my own work...sorry, but I'm too deviant for "Deviant" Art. My work always gets taken down and banned when ever I try uploading any of it.

Thanks for sharing

Mipsus In reply to TobiasRoetsch [2009-10-07 09:17:57 +0000 UTC]

Who is it that you think is "blaming" somebody on the site? LOL, sounds like you're trying to play the role of "victim" to me. *snicker* Sorry kiddo, but the cross is for Christ...not for you.

As I mentioned in another message I made in this thread, he openly admits to using stock photos and 3D rendering programs like Terragen as his source material on his actual website.

Not that it's that unique on DA or anything, the vast majority of "artists" on DA are of the poser class variety, using other people's work as a significant stepping stone for their own. That "photo painting" technique seems to be especially popular right now amongst the more popular devian tartlets.

TobiasRoetsch In reply to Mipsus [2009-10-07 09:31:41 +0000 UTC]

And where is the problem of using stock photos or 3D programs? He said that he removed the texture stocks ... texture overlays of rock or bark or whatever it was.

Rock or bark stocks taken by NASA? That's cool
Man I really want to understand your problem. You seem to be very frustrated. How does it come?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mipsus In reply to TobiasRoetsch [2009-10-07 12:39:01 +0000 UTC]

Where did I say there was something wrong with being a poser class wannabe artist? I mean it's not like I've mentioned "your" work or anything, now have I? I guess that's the point though, now innt? You use the same "techniques" that he does to make "his" art...that's why you got so defensive about it when I pointed out the fact that he's just a poser class, art world reject. LOL

No need to get so upset about it though, Sparkles, it's not like posers can't make money off "their" art or anything, as I said, it really doesn't take much to fool your average devian tartlet.

I wouldn't go and try to get a job at some respectable outfit though with work like that...cause it's not gonna get ya very far, not unless who ever they have in charge of hiring is an idiot.

Primarily it's about respect, about personal achievement and being recognized as someone who has skill and ability...but if yer not interested in that sort of thing, well, don't sweat it, it's not like you've got anything to worry about. ^__^

This really irks me. You'll understand what I mean if you happen to stop by my own gallery. Note: this is not advertisement, it's simply to reinforce my opinions.

It nothing has to do with me. I'm using my own way of creating art and it doesn't matter how. But as you might have noticed, I'm the gallery moderator of the sci-fic and space art galleries here at dA. That is why I feel responsible for these kind of art and therefore also for the artists.

I don't know why you're trying to talk about money and jobs etc. This community is not primarily a place to find jobs and money but to share your (hobby) artworks. U don't have to make money out of everything and not every person is trying to earn money out of their art.

I'm not going to continue this sensless discussion and ask you to do the same. You don't (want to) get my point.

Mipsus In reply to TobiasRoetsch [2009-10-07 16:51:36 +0000 UTC]

LOL, it's all about money. Maybe not for you in particular, but the whole purpose of Deviantart is to make money. You must have missed all those ad banners I guess. And they share that opportunity with artists via the print shop and so forth.

It's not the only factor of course, the biggest I think, here on DA, would be the concept of online popularity, which is why you see so many focused on things like page hits and what not, with very little attention paid to actually improving yourself as an artist.

The majority of your own work is so simplistically simple there are literally DOZENS of tutorials available that explain exactly how to do it: [link]

...I'd be willing to wager that most of the people like yourself don't much like links such as that...sort of takes all the mystery and awe out of your work and makes it mundane and unoriginal at best. Yer not gonna be able to get all those page hits if everyone knows how easily you slopped together your "art", huh? Which also explains why you reacted in anger to my original post.

The astronomy in your picture is a little incorrect (you'd never see that many hot higher energy (blue) stars nestled into a dust cloud because of radiation pressure.

But shit, everything in that picture just flows. Definitely one of the best nebulae artworks I've seen!
