Description Some of you asked for it, so here it is - a list of the materials needed to follow my tutorial and make a full set of realistic costume wings.

Click here for a transcription/text version of this list~

Part 0 - MATERIALS YOU ARE HERE
Part 0.5 - TOOLS
Part 1 - CONCEPT
Part 2 - FEATHERS
Part 3 - HARNESS
Part 4 - ASSEMBLY
Part 5 - COVERTS
Part 6 - ARM-COVER WIP
EXTRA -Β  RESULTS : See what OTHER people have made following this tutorial~

Still working on the last part - post questions, suggestions, and encouragement below~

EDIT 05/19/2014: Made sure to add that 12 gauge wire is equivalent to hanger wire, as the latter is becoming harder to find in some areas.
EDIT 05/16/2017: Hot tip from TatianaDragonWhisper , if you find dog collars at your local dollar store you can harvest parachute buckles & D-rings from them for cheap!

Already finished your wings? Please fill out this questionnaire , I'd love to hear about it!

Er, yay? Glad you passed, what did it end up looking like?

I had to skip on the fabric and paint but I think it still looked fantastic, it was enough to awe the entire class, so yeah, I'd say it looked good. I had used poster board for the primaries and foam for the secondaries, kinda of heavy but it was functional.

Sweet~ If you get the chance I'd love to see a photo or better yet video of it in motion!

Ok another question. Where it says metal hangers, would it work with thin(er) wire or does it have to be that thick? And if it does does have to be that thick would it matter if u didn't use 'hangar' wire? I need to know this ASAP. Thanks!

Sunnybrook1 In reply to NibblesNZ [2014-05-19 19:44:56 +0000 UTC]

Ah, forgot to update this, sorry! 12 gauge wire is equivalent to hanger wire, can be bought in hardware stores in 100ft rolls, usually about $10.

Is the list of materials just enough for one wing or two wings? Thanks!

IGotDaFeels In reply to ??? [2014-02-19 03:59:11 +0000 UTC]

Hi there! I saw this amazing tutorial on Tumblr and immediately had a shitton of ideas, but; for the paint, would it be okay to use spray paint instead of paintbrush paint? As in, would the spray paint make the material too stiff, or...?

I completely, absolutely, adore this by the way :3 It's really precise and gives craft idiots like me a foolproof way to not mess up~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunnybrook1 In reply to IGotDaFeels [2014-02-20 04:49:46 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it! I used spray paint to change the demo-white wing to black after the fact, but still used wall-paint to glue the fabric layers together. Hmmm... dunno if the spray paint will be thick enough to do the job, only way to know for sure would be to make a test feather.

If you try it I'd love to know how it works out~

And lol, I just wanted to be thorough & make sure my methods were being described correctly, I've read SO many tutorials that had steps that made me go, "...whu?" The only thing I could do next to improve this would be releasing to-scale pdf's of feather patterns for printing or making video tutorials...

I'm trying to Ariel from The Tempest (In harpy form) I plan on wearing a bodysuit covered in feathers. Do you have any idea on how to hide the back pack, I have a basic idea for the arms and hands but the back is giving me some problems thanks for the help

Well if you are covering a body-suit with feathers, I can easily imagine covering the backpack with feathers to to blend in, or having an additional top/vest that clips over the harness/backpack.

Most real birds have lots of long feathers between the wing/flight feathers and the downy body feathers, so whatever you make can imitate those:

Or is there more to the problem you previously described? I wouldn't really worry about it at this point, once you have the working part finished then you'll have something to experiment with~

I think the easiest way would to do something like the Cat costumes (from the musical casts) and just make a vest or shirt that just covers the uper part of the costumeΒ

amazing wings.

would it be possible to glue real small feathers onto the cardboard feathers or will that not allow them to open and close smoothly?

thanks!

Posterboard or very thin cardboard may work, I'll have to try it and post the results...

Sweet tutorial! I got a question, though. I'm making a Songbird (BioShock Infinite) cosplay and the wings are more bat-like than bird-like (picture here: i.stack.imgur.com/npRQT.jpg )

Do you think this tutorial would be a good starting point for making these wings? Again, awesome tutorial!

What is the plastic mesh used for? I bought some the other day and I was looking through all the pages of the tutorial and I couldn't find where it was being used.

Ah, sorry for the confusion (& I thought it was grouped together on part 0) it'll be used in the as-yet-unfinished part 6, the arm-cover.

I REEEEEALLY wish I could say, can't though as I am in the middle of moving from WA to NY so that comes first right now. My goal is to complete it very soon, in the next month or so, since now a lot of people are seeing the tutorial I'd love to polish it up and finish it as best as possible. Then, the experimentation can begin...

Wish me luck!
