Description I was going into Horse withdrawl, so I started this digital painting.  Decided to tone down the hair and look more painted like.  I love the way the evening sun turned his hair into glowing copper.  I just have to get rid of annoying tree shadow in the original references.  I am keeping the background abstract, but I do have to figure out the foreground as in the references the grass in my pasture was hip high to me, so it covered up most of his legs.  I went with water, very abstracty.

I think that the green glow under his raised hind leg should be turned blue as the green is reflected color from the grass in the reference photo, it would be different now that you've put him in water instead.

You are absolutely correct.  Funny thing is the color I used had no green in it, but the grey with the blue background seems to make it green.

Thanks so much for pointing that out, now off to fix it!

I love how your WIPs show the extremes of completion. The face is so stunning and you can really see how much work it get the piece there. Amazing!

How do you decide where to place the lighting scheme? I mean, aside from the directionality of the light, how do you know which irregular shape the light or dark area is?
This is gorgeous, by the way

Most it is reference pictures, but some of it is experience and 3D visualization.  Light travels in a straight line and all that, and a good imagination.

Thanks so much for the kind words!
