Description
This is another of the goth cheerleader photos featuring *Moonbeam13 . The first photo was an "establishing shot." This one is more along the lines of my Elemental photos that try to concentrate people and things down to their essence. The first one is here: [link]

I really love this. Not just cos it's Danie, but because of the whole mood of the image. I like the crop and it's a really strong shot. Would be great in a models book

OMG! I love this image. I see a Marlene Dietrich resemblance to the model's attitude.

Someone please give Bette Davis her face back.
This is just beautiful; I love the mood, the composition, Dani, everything but the title, which just doesn't seem to jibe somehow. This piece in particular may have come from that series, but it's far too elegant and weighty for "goth cheer."
I read the exchange between you and ` arachnid15 and I think you both have points--his about this piece, yours about the relative usefulness of titles, which may ultimately boil down to a point of personal style or preference. I admit that I had a difficult time with titles when I first joined this community (oh so very many hours ago ), but eventually was inspired by other artists here who I felt *could* title their pieces in a consistently interesting and meaningful way--inspired to stretch myself to choose titles that added a whole new dimension of understanding to the artwork (who knows if I've accomplished that, but I do try). I think there's nothing wrong with more prosaic titling styles, even "Untitled 247" for cataloguing purposes etc etc, but for my part there ends up being something lacking in the overall experience of viewing artwork. In fact, sublime skill in titling may be a whole other artform unto itself. But IMHO, and speaking as a newb to an old hand, heh, it's worth the extra effort to make sure a piece is titled well.
FWIW.

yeah i agree about titles. sometimes i guess i just go with my first impulse on a title, and later i might realize that i could have made a better choice. but that goes with everything in life, so i don't regret making any choices, including making a bad title. we just have to accept what we have created and move on to the next thing!

Great philosophy, that. Speaking as a recovering perfectionist (and a writer), I think I am sometimes entirely too comfortable with revising, heh.

i love the composition of this shot, how you've chosen to focus just on certain elements of her face and cut out the rest. it really works and even though all we see is a gaze out of a single eye, it is really a strong one.
the way her face is compositioned also leads our eyes out over the rest of the image and to the parts that are out of focus and i think her blurred out outfit is where we see the more 'cheerleader' side of her
wonderful!

and i realy don't have anything else to say here. except that i really like her lips. her eyes are big and pretty too way to take a picture of a pretty girl, you!

m, I really like this, I like the angle and the focus on her face...with you still being able to see her attire...that's great.
yeah, the focus is really great, and makes this shot a whole lot more interesting...
her makeup is nice, and I love the look in her eyes, not quite sure what they're saying, but they definitely have expression to them.
I like the sort of darker colors in this as well, also sort of sets a mood for the whole shot.
Lovely work

But it's good, I like the light very much.

I really like the angle on this shot. The composition and choice to crop out half the face and throw the background totally out of focus has drawn the eye into the subjects own eye, which is sharp as glass. For a digital camera I am so impressed, the sharpness on this shot reminds me of Hassleblad lenses. Even though the lighting is rather harsh, it seems to fit into the scene and highlights her mascara and lips. One other thing you have is you've just managed to catch a catchlight in her eye, without which the shot would lose most of it's impact, if the subjects eyes were dark and lifeless. The only thing that seems to bother me is that watermark looking thing just below her chin. Maybe a bit of PS trickery could have sorted that out. Apart from that, nice one.

sigma will be happy to know their lens is being compared to hasselblad and good eye with the spot below her chin. it looks like a lens flare of some kind, although i can't figure out where it came from
thanks for your very detailed comment!

Must say, it looks like a killer sharp lens there! Did you use an unsharp masking in PS?
Pesky flare hey! Bane of my life sometimes!

superkev In reply to schitz011 [2004-12-18 14:01:47 +0000 UTC]
nope. unsharp mask is only for photos that i desperately need to rescue. i won't post a photo unless it is sharp out of the camera.
the sigma is is a very highly rated lens though. [link] it's my second favorite portrait lens now that i have the canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS USM. but for most everyone, i'd recommend this sigma f2.8 EX macro. i used it in this situation because it required close focusing, and the macro side of the sigma gives a lot of flexibility in that regard.

Hmm. i'm actually thinking of going digital next year, when I can afford it. A friend of mine is a pro with his own little collection of minons to shoot school photos and they use 10d's so he'll organise me a deal on one. He also uses Sigma and is full of praise for them, I can see from your photos why. Pinsharp!
I'll certainly look into Sigmas as an alternative to Canon lenses, especially if they are of this quality. I'm assuming you shoot RAW files...
Till then I'll just have to do with my trusty old A1 Canon...
I hadn't considered a macro lens actually, doing landscapes and all, but it's be damm handy to have one.

superkev In reply to schitz011 [2004-12-18 14:26:40 +0000 UTC]
yup. i shoot RAW for all of my "important" photos. and the smooth, brightly colored images from the canon CMOS-based cameras reminds me of ektachrome 25, except you don't have to shoot at ASA25. when i started getting serious about doing photography, the sigma was a godsend. it could gratify my macro needs and portrait needs in one modest purchase. sigma's EX line is excellent, but the 105 is a standout. i'm also planning to get the EX 12-24mm before i go to thailand.

Sweet. i'm just getting into the digital side of things with my brothers borrowed 300d. I've been a big fan of Canons FD series lenses for years (which is what I used at photoschool) I've had a few problems with old EF lenses when I bought an EOS 5 years back (since sold on as the lens was so soft it was like a sponge) Good to hear that Sigma are producing inexpensive (relatively speaking) lenses which old their own.
I must have a look at their line, though down here in darkest Africa you are pretty limited to what stock they have in the local shops.
enjoy your trip to Thailand, it's great there.

Nice depth of focus. The texture of her skin is beautiful. I like it that you didn't let it get all washed out, a challenge with the start b/w contrast to her skirt. What beautiful eyes the model has. Very Bette Davis! I love seeing the out-of-focus pattern of her fish net stockings. I do agree with the person who said that the title didn't do justification to the work. It needs something bigger, deeper. Her eyes say too much.

I forgot to add that I think this piece has far too much emotional weight for the title you chose. I understand that that was the theme of the shoot but I believe it will weaken the piece for others. The shot deserves better.

thank you. i have been debating the usefulness of titles for a while now. should a title add to a photo, or should the photo stand on its own? you know what they say... a picture's worth a thousand words... does the title need to be a thousand words? i hear where you're coming from though.

One of the dangers of working exclusively with a Wacom is accidentally clicking on something. Luckily for me, I happened to accidentally fave this, as opposed to say, some sort of internet dating service ad.
Can anyone really say anything more about the crop? It's fantastic, and startling the way you've cropped through her eye--something we're all told not to do in Photo 101, like cropping at an arm or leg joint. But it works.

Great DoF and the detail is awesome; the texture in the lips, the eyelashes, et al... Remind me to steal your camera later
The shot also tells a different story to each individual viewer which is sometimes difficult to achieve.

Have you ever seen the film 'Bring it on?' Its a bit of a teenage film but it showed on TV in the UK last night and its about cheerleaders and how they recruited a goth cheerleader as she was an ex gymnast, then I see your shot! Strange coincidence.
Now for critique. The angle is truely beautiful. Its really refreshing the way the face is cropped and is close to the edge, although I think her right eye should either be cropped out completely or completely in the image, although it doesn't take away from the rest of the image.
