Description Since the first time I picked up a camera, I've been inspired by the work of Yousuf Karsh, probably one of the greatest portrait artists of all time, in any media.

It seems as though Karsh photographed all of the famous people of his time. He's well known for his portraits of Sir Winston Churchill, JFK, Martin Luther King Jr., Ernest Hemingway and hundreds of others. The world lost a great artist when Yousuf Karsh died just this year.

Imagine my shock and delight to discover that one of my customers actually grew up in Ottawa, and knew Yousuf Karsh personally. Her mother was Karsh's personal secretary for over 20 years. My customer, the saint of a woman she is, loaned me several autographed Karsh portfolio books, as well as several personal notes written by Karsh to her mother. These are treasures, and I am grateful that she has entrusted me with them.

Here is my photographic tribute to Karsh. I've tried to employ a hint of his dramatic lighting style, as well as toning the image similarly to his own.

I hope you like it!

I like the perception of picture. Has a looking through your eyes kind of appeal to it with the glasses. Thx for the favourite.

such a nice tribute. you're lucky to have met someone who was able to bring you a little closer to the man who inspired you. though i have to say, i don't know of his work; but i'll have to check it out. i'm enamored of an earlier photographer myself. Julia Margaret Cameron.

Wonderful peice.
-i think the reflection is overdoing it a bit, but thats debateable.
The focus fades out nicely-> a perfect choice of depth-of-field.

Wonderful work. I managed to see only one of his exhibits and that was at the National Gallery shortly after it opened. He was a great artist and his talent will be missed.

I love the composition. The key point in this image is obviously the signature of Karsh, and it's placed very thoughtfully in the "frame"

Wonderful job Kevin ... just simply wonderful!

Ahh you never fail to remind me when i have you on watch of all the photos with the glasses (these are the same ones as the alst 2 right? ) i like this the most, much less of a clinical feel, not that i dislike that i just prefer somthing like this with more character, and the story behind it just top its off, great work.

There is so much detail in the frames and in the letter itself. Looks really good, and the shadows add to the over all photo a ton. This is some great work.
