Description
The Scrambled Leggs all-girl comedy troupe from Toronto needed a risque publicity photo for their upcoming show. Their idea was to simulate the look of 1940's calendar girls with bright white light and lots of contrast. In fact, many of the samples they showed me were of pinup girl drawings, not photographs.Anyway, I had this idea for fitting them together like a puzzle. Here's the final result.
Light is provided by two softboxes directly above them.
p.s. The girls are covered up, and was taken for publication in a regular newspaper or magazine, so I didn't check the mature content box.

their hair looks so beautiful and vibrant. i thought there were four of them in the group though. putting them together like puzzle pieces is a neat idea. the only thing that bothers me is the little bit of blue on the panties of the one at the bottom left. looks out of place among the white and flesh tones. i probably would have checked the mature content box. but i'm conservative when it comes to that i guess.

when they actually purchased this image, they wanted me to photoshop the panties out of it. i spent a lot of time doing that, and it's the weirdest photoshop work i've ever had to do. it was also kind of weird building a crotch for the woman on the upper right, since i've gotten to know them all quite well after having done a few shoots with them.

that does sound like very odd and difficult photoshop work. how often does one really build crotches in photoshop after all. do they plan on doing any more nude or nearly nude shots like this? i rather prefer their clothed ones.

Aha. You conveyed the pin-up concept very well, That's actually the first thing I thought of when I saw the pic. They almost look like they're floating in space though - the cloth under them lacks some substance.

every time this crept back into my message centre, I was confused - believing there should be 4 girls. Glad to know that wasn't the drugs talking..
I can see the pinup drawing influence... though the lipstick should be redder. but maybe that's just my own personal preference

I think as far as the 1940's look goes, what you needed was more white... eg, the girls needed to look white not tanned or even semi-tanned, with red lipstick.

First let me tell you that you are the most interresting deviant I have had the pleasure to watch. Everytime I see the work you post here it inspires me to try your techniques. You are very generous to share with the rest of us your knowledge and I sincerely hope that you will find lots of success in your life.
My only comment here is to say that I love the makeup, the lighting and the way the eye travels throughout the picture.

My only complaint Is the bottom left girl, her neck Is too crimped. The other girls are perfect and the whole Idea Is beautiful and I must admit, very creative, but the one girl doesn't seem comfortable nor natural.

they all have such fair skin and are on a white background so i find the lighting superb. i love the title and idea of a puzzle - as in the heads all going different ways - isn't a girl missing - the brunette asian chick?

One of the things that grabs me here is the careful attention to pose. Each of the girls in this composition stands [erm, lays] on her own ... as, each pose would make for a great image solely. This ties the entire composition together VERY well, as no 'one' pose is stronger or weaker than the other.
The color is very well done when considering the 'pin-up' type artwork of years past. Soft tones, yet sharply defined edges and color spots of interest as in the lips and hair shown here.
Facial expressions aside, this was very well done overall bud!

Great capture on this one. You definatly knew what you were doing with the lighting, it's so perfect. You can really see it on the hips of the girl on the right. Their facial expressions kind of bug me, not sure if it's the right emotion.

very VERY cool idea. only thing that bothers me a bit: the women with the blonde hair. the angle isn't exactly flattering concerning her face/expression.
otherwise i like it much, esp. the high contrast and spots of colours like hair/lips
