Description This photo is yet another in my series of the Toronto comedy troupe Scrambled Leggs . They wanted something a little bit wild to contrast with their "pretty" group photo. So, we came up with this " catfight" idea.

Tech Notes:
The exposure was a little bit tricky. Wearing black, with a predominantly black background presented some challenges. It's very easy for them to fade into the background and disappear, or appear like floating heads and arms. The trick is to position a light behind them, pointing towards the camera to outline them slightly against the background. If you position the light too far behind the subject, it will cause a nasty lens flare, or a fog in the image. Positioning of backlight can be tricky. The primary light was located high and above the camera, pointing down at the subjects. Both lights were Alien Bees B800 studio flashes, diffused with softboxes. The diffusion is important in creating a " glamour lighting" feel. I had to set up and shoot quickly, since the girls couldn't hold this position for long, and we had very limited time in the theatre. The setup and shooting of about 5 frames of this particular scene took about 5 minutes.

I have to appreciate this piece for a few things. First of all, I am very impressed as to how the lighting in this shot captures every bit of the basic shapes needed. Also, the over-expressions blindly give off the theme of the piece. But one thing that surprises me is that even though there is some negative space to the right of the shot, it still seems balanced because of the three models lined up in a subtle curve, and the one up front. This is truly an interesting shot. Good stuff.

wow... just for the explenation i'm gonna add u to my watch list

also.. the shot is awsome especcially with the subjects as they are all perfectly clear and beutifully expressive

hmm... i feel that the angular object behind them (fairly visible between the two back heads and with a lil sparkling to the left) is out of place... i assume u hadn' really noticed it while taking the shot but i think u can still eliminate it with some post production.

heeh.. but it's such a great shot that it doesn' matter that much (+fav)

cheers

Thanks very much for your kind comment and fav. The shape in the background is a grand piano. We were using it to add to the cabaret feeling of the photoshoot. But, I didn't get QUITE enough light on it to make it work exactly right. Live and learn!

if i squint, the background is all the same. fun times.
the one in the middle clearly is wondering why you aren't saving her! it's like you're one of those obnoxious tourists that takes a picture of a crime instead of doing something
and the random foot really looks like it belongs to no one...creepy!
this really looks like if given a couple mroe seconds, they'd all be in a heap on the floor

Very cool Kev.. almost slapstick.. it is a very -pre arranged shot... but if it weren't then it wouldn't be funny it'd be more of a journalistic shot of a real life fight which kind of defeats te object.. it's very clear and really well done I think...
brings out a different side to them
I love the expression of the girl at the front

cool stuff

Hmm... orchestrated 'wildness' always looks so visually pre-ordained.

That said, it's a technically accomplished shot (like the idea of the 'Tech Notes' incidentally) and all, it just doesn't float by boat visually.

Wow, this is so great! Perfect for a comedy troupe, because it's just totally silly. The poses, facial expressions, lighting, it's all great, and thanks for taking the time to explain your methods, wish more people did!

this is just GREAT .. I LOVE it .. such fab fab expressions *wipestearsoflaughterfromcheeks*

Thanks you so much for your techie descriptions .. the only thing I could think of to help differentiate the different blacks was something I learned from watching the making of blade 2. All of their outfits were every so slight different shades and textures of black, that way lighting would absorb differently.

Your way is obviously better because A) its quicker, B) its cheaper and C) gives lighting to the entire seen.

Love the foot, the three fighting and the one in the center being scared and bewildered. True feelings actively expressed, you can feel the energy and synergy of the girls .. Lovely work hon

I needed to think about your comment for a couple of days, re: the lighting in blade 2... i think they used their method because the characters are always moving. backlighting is frequently used in movies, but usually only when the characters are relatively still. with action, there's no guarantee that they'll be in the right place for the backlighting. fun stuff to think about! thanks!

It was the only thing I could thing of to offer back the help you've given me and loads of other people with your experience. I'm a film lover and always watch how the films were made (I'd love to work somehow on films and see my name in the credits, I always sit and try to find jobs in the credits that I'd like to do!!). I remember Blade 2 had problems highlighting the many blacks so that they wouldn't disappear, which is the same problem you solved with back lighting. Glad I could help in a miniscule way, even if it doesn't help much in the end, its all thinking for a good cause .. your exceptional work

I think the only thing a bit distracting for me here is those 5 dots on the left in the darkness ... what the heck are they??

Other than that, great light, and great pose from the group
