Description
Here's another from my pregnancy series with Laura. As you can see, she's just about to burst.Lighting Notes:
Black on black is tricky. I had a softbox high and in front to highlight her belly and provide main light. There is another light with a 30 degree honeycomb grid from high up and behind to provide some backlighting. I wanted a subtle and classical look to this lighting, so the variance in shadow detail is very slight.

i like this pose better than the other third trimester one. she seems more relaxed. the tie adds a very neat element to it. i know you meant it to represent how she can still be "all business" and strong even though she's pregnant, but to me the addition of the tie is like adding a little of the father into the picture, or the son. you've got such a pure black background here, it's lovely.

great shot. thank you for saying how you positionned the lights. it made me learn something
you should be proud of yourself to be able to make great shots AND educate some hopeful ignorants.
there is one last thing i wanted to know. how do you make your backgrounds? do you have a black cloth or something. or do you do it on photoshop after cropping and editing the pic?
i am asking this about the other photo as well. the one with the same mother but with a white background.
i've even noticed another pic with a 'beige' background i think...
i'm sorry to bother you like this, i just have a big problem with backgrounds. they are never nicely lit, nor bright and i always manage to get a lot of ugly shadows on whatever i use as a background. can you help me please?

i usually use cloth as a background. for black, you just have to make sure that no light hits the background. for white, i use a white sheet. i wash out the wrinkles by putting lots of light on the background to overexpose it.

although pregnancy is a very regular term that we see them on the streets, on busses, in markets..
but it seems so supernatural and powerful on this photo..
a very goddess creature...
amazing..

What an amazing picture! Pregnancy pictures are pretty common, but this has something unique in itself...perhaps in the official-looking suit that your model is wearing.

Very beautiful. You capture the pure essence of what makes this woman, a woman. Lost of people find pregnancy not the most pretty thing, but i find this beautiful, and this woman, what makes her woman, is her confidence in her self. She doesn't care if she looks great, shes pregnant, but she seems confident in who she is, and in her child. Very beautifully done, the black background is nice, really makes her stand out from the background. Very nice

Amazing. What a great portrayal of a beautiful woman at an incredible time in her life. I think it might be even better with a slightly exposed breast... but, that's really a call as to how far you want to push it. Excellent work.

Its amazing what a difference something as simple as a tie can make to the meaning of a photo. Its a nice, subtle way of showing that although she's that far along with her pregnancy, it doesnt hamper her and she is still able to do the things she used to, still able to work as hard, and from that you get a very 'anti-discrimination' feel to this one.
All from that little tie.

nice... why a tie? i don't get that. i guess it fits but first off it just gives a masculine feeling. the belly looks more pinkish than the face, i think teh colors should match, also i'd blur teh skin of teh belly just slightly, now all the lines and stuff are so clear... maybe i'm just so anti-baby that it bugs me because of that. anyway her relaxed pose and clothing make this really nice, her belly is the center of the photo since there's only darkness under it, that works

the tie was meant to represent that she can still be "all business" even though she is pregnant. i agree in some ways about the color matching and lines and stuff, because of the aesthetics of it. but I also think these photos should be realistic to a degree, so I didn't do any touchups to the skin.

Remember those big plastic balloons you got as a kid, tied to a giant elastic band? You'd bop the ball back and forth on the end of the elastic, bouncing it off your fist. Laura's belly looks just like that right now.

holy jumpin' with the hugeness O_o I can't imagine my friend's belly getting that big...she's already half way there, but I can't imagine her any bigger!
actually... i can't imagine my mum ever being that big with child and not breaking in half... holy jumpin'...
allright, the unbelievableness of pregnancy aside... very lovely picture I really like this one. It reminds me of this woman on the Animal Care Committee here, who was pregnant when she applied to vet school, and back then they'd never let a pragnant woman in so she said nothing. She was confident in her abilities to handle pregnancy and family life as well as pursueing the career of her dreams. (and once she started shwing they'd already started classes and they couldn't kick her out for being pregnant
) I think it's the tie.. but Dr Benn doesn't wear ties.. but still... there's sometimes this idea that a woman must either be in the business way or the family way, but I think that's silly, because you've clearly showed here that a tie goes well with a buddah belly
