Description
Another from my shoot with Max. Disagreeing with Max might not be the best idea.btw Max is a really easy-going, laid-back kind of guy. I asked him to be a bad-ass for the shot, and he pulled it off nicely, no?

That's an amazing shot dude, you managed to capture every bit of detail on his face without even a hint of overexposure.
Wicked. ^_^

You really are a truly gifted photographer Kev. This image took my breathe away. Amazing stuff man. I am in awe. Just wonderful how you manage to capture someones feelings and soul in your work. Your stuff with Danie is the same way. You took someone who is just beautiful in every way and somehow made her more beautiful and allowed the world to see it. You have a gift man. You really do...
All my respect Kev...
Dave

Oh yeah, lighting and exposure details if you have em. I really would love to captue something like this, but I purely suck at it. This image just kills me man.

now that i take a look at the original raw file, i can see that i used a softbox to light his face too. the high contrast processing fooled me because it makes it look more umbrella-ish. i had the lens at 200mm and f2.8, which is my favorite way to shoot portraits

i guess it's just a matter of what we choose to practice. i couldn't make images like yours either, cuz we took different paths and i haven't a clue how you do what you do.
i believe i used a white sheet as the backdrop, and lit it with a softbox, about 1.5 stops overexposed. i lit his face with a silver umbrella. the lens was the extremely kick-ass canon 70-200 f2.8L IS USM that i use for almost all my portrait work. i processed the raw file with high contrast in capture one, and then did a calculations method conversion to black and white to pull out skin texture.

start theme music.... "bad to the bone. ba ba ba ba baaaaadd..." he really looks cool, multiple conotations of it, here. the black and white suits max i think. i like the teeny border around it.

Once again, it's the lighting that really stands out about this portrait. I love the contrast between the highlights and his dark skin, it's wonderful.

This model really has it all; he is obviously very soft, gentle, caring... it burns through those shades so I can see the soft center of his eyes; and yet there is an inherant strength about him, something that is not entirely normal. Evil is such a bad word, he is not at all evil looking, but very strong, passionate in his beliefs. Perhaps bad-ass is a way of desribing it, but serious, strong and passionate are the words I would use. With him on the set and you behind the camera I think this makes for a wonderful partnership and he has proven to me through these few shots that he is a model to keep.
Using the light background works well to bring out the texture in his skin; a sign of the person, the life. Wonderful lighting in that respect and it works well with the light coloured top. I see him very much in the same way as I saw Mekhi Phifer who played "Odin James" in "O" (the re-make of Othello) with his serious, loving, and deeply passionate qualities. I don't know why this model is detracting me from commenting so much on the shot, but he really has gotten me thinking. Wonderful model anyway, I will admit defeat to my comment and leave you to find his number for another shoot
Great work Kev. Love it.

Yes yes, I completely agree, - strong and passionate in his beliefs are the words to describe that expression. I think I'm going to hang that portrait on my wall to seek inspiration in good deeds.

The depth of field on this shot is just perfect Kev, really nicely done!
I love this shot! I love the fact that it's in b+w, as that gives it more of that 'badass' edge I think you were going for.
Seriously though, he's a great model, and this is a great shot!

i think he'd look more of a hard-ass if he wasn't wearing a hoodie - just a thought. not like i want to see him naked again but hoodies just seem kiddish like those kids who are trying to look like "thugs" and can't dress themselves.
other wise, expression on his face looks like he could kill a puppy.

haha i didn't say that!
just that if you're going to put sunglasses on, might as well have him wear a top that reflects that whole "bad-ass" image.

this is excellent Kevin the ability to see some of the skin of his left eyelid amidst the black skin - its really well done in lighting (of course
) and clearly the guy gave you great expression with the shades
