Description
I thought it would be nice to see a movie of the eclipse from 20 March 2015, as seen from space. The view point is located on orbit, at 40 deg N latitude, 20 deg longitude. Each frame is 10 minutes in real-time, starting from 7 AM to 12 AM, GMT.
I made the rendering with the fabulous xplanet program by Nati Meir (open source, free), the time calculation of animation in a BASH script, animation frames put together in GNU-GIMP and optimized it with gifsicle. I made some modifications of bump & specular maps of the globe (see the borders of the countries, in the full view).

Thanks. Yes, indeed, like a tiny tiny one. A friend of mine have seen it and said "Oh gosh, I didn't know the eclipse is so small..."

Hi,
short story:
I used as the sources for the maps:
1) Heightmap of Earth's surface (including water and ice); (take care, it's enormous in size, so be sure you click save as... not click directly on the link:
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipediaβ¦
2) Matching specular maps from The Celestia Motherlode:
www.celestiamotherlode.net/catβ¦
---------
Long story:
I already put my maps & everything online, in an older project that uses xplanet to draw nice images on the wallpaper. The project is called "planet-slideshow" on Sourceforge [ sourceforge.net/projects/plane⦠]
In the download there are the maps (specular, bumpmap, clouds etc) in subfolder:
../resources/xplanet_res/images
The images are about 5 mb in total.
Have also a look at the readme in that folder, I fully described there the sources & credits to other fantastic people that made these beautiful things possible. Also it is useful if you need other resolutions or colors, etc.
