Description
Original Charcoal Drawing For Sale-$40 9'x12' Strathmoreยฎ 400 paperIt's currently framed and I can send pictures if you would like it already in a matted frame-drawing plus frame is $50-shipping not included
Recently I've taken a break from my computer to work on something I've never worked with, charcoal. I have to say I highly enjoyed working on this. The deep black you can get is fantastic!
It's been a long time since I truly enjoyed working on an image (let alone traditional) I even woke up early in the morning before work just to have a few extra minutes to add to it. This is also the only drawing I've done that I've EVER hung in my own house. I framed it with an olive green matte and it now hangs in my living room; the olive green compliments the burnt orange and browns in the room.
Tools:
Charcoal 4B soft-2B, 4B medium (I'm not sure the difference between the soft and medium, but this is just worked for me, the mediums was a darker black and easy to move around while the soft was like my base layer of shading)
9"x12" Strathmore Medium Paper
Roughly 5-7 hours
Edited the grainyness from my scanner a bit in photoshop, also my scanner left a dark strip in the bottom that I attempted the lighten. Over all though, the original image really does have that much contrast in it-I love contrast.

It was easy in the sense of easy to make things dark, and it was easy to smudge around and blend things. ย But it's far less forgiving than graphite because you can't really erase it but so much. ย If you try to erase you risk smearing things on your drawing and even then it won't erase fully. ย But it's very rewarding in the end! ย

It sounds like a heap of fun ^^
I might give charcoal a try one day, but first I have to master graphite and pastels xD

Askjkl; I am jealous! Charcoal is my nemesis. But you did a really excellent job here, definitely worthy of that frame!

Did you use compressed or vine charcoal?
Regardless, I really love how free the movement is, and how you managed to suggest the muscles under the coat. You did a really lovely job, and I look forward to seeing the next one!

When you are done with charcol work, you can spray it with hairspray to keep it from smearing in a picture frame
Charcol is so much fun to use

Indeed! I used hairspray on my drawings but since I've been working with custom model horses, I had some real fixative laying around so I used that on this. However, I lightly touched it after like 3 layers and it still came off on my finger. Huurrmm. Hairspray might still be the best thing.

Its sad that we put that crap in our hair xD I find that fixative works better with the chalk pastels, than it does with charcol. Hair spray is my personal favorite

i completly agree, charcoal is amazing to work with, can get messy but thats sometimes fun. lol
and basicaly from my understanding with soft and medium is how dark they can get, cause there is also a dark one. but thats just want my art teacher told me. xD
always, this is lovely hun, and working eith picks with alot of shading is also very fun, as it shows people what you can do. :3
the shading on this is also lovely, its really smoth and everything is clean.
again a very nice pic my dear.
and i have to say, i really enjoy seeing your traditional stuff. <3

Thank you so much! Yes, it was messy, I kept everything on a paper towel so I didn't get shaving on my table. That's good to know, I must not have any of the darkest ones only soft and medium. I think I like the medium best. Hopefully there will be more traditional to come! I need to make a partner for this piece on my wall, it looks lonely.

I dabbled in it once like 8 years ago, but I don't really consider it any good. I watched a lot of tutorials before I started this one.
