Description Best frigging Ponyta I've ever drawn.

Was drawing my friends' trainer characters and their Pokemon, just for reference.. and I loved how this guy came out so much I had to post him ^-^ (that and the Valentine's picture I did is getting old. ) His name's officially Dante, but you can just say he's a random Ponyta I suppose.

I'm slowly getting back into Pokemon. There's just so much to work with, both fanfic- and fanart-wise.. I enjoy putting my own spin on the characters and imagining how groups of them would live in the wild. The world is so complex and wide yet open to interpretation, it beats me why people just want to stick with the canon characters when writing fanfiction. (particularly the Misty/Ash/May smut-fluff-inanity terrorists, but that's a rant for another time.) Apologies for my annoying habit of rambling while writing descriptions xD

Sorry to everyone I owe trades/FP art to. School's been busy.

I saw your name on =whippetluv 's last whippet picture, and I thought I'd come to check out your art. I love ponyta! I used to think about pokemon nearly 24/7... because, like you said, the world is so wide-open for stuff. Trainers (God there had to be practically a million), the pokemon themselves (Honestly, they need to stop making new ones), and the general people. It's quite entertaining.

My problem with fanfiction in the pokemon world, is that the main character usually represents the author themselves, and 90% of the people who are into pokemon enough to write are just kids, and their writing is terrible. Of course, that's only a sterotype, and I know there are good writers for that fandom out there; I'm just generalizing. But the pokemon art is ALWAYS interesting. Because you can actually see the differences in the particular pokemon and their trainers. It's just so much fun! The games are superfun of course. Hehe.

I used to be so proud of my Lanturn!

Anyway, you did a great job on ponyta! Definitely keep practicing, because you can only get better. It's been a long time since I've drawn a ponyta/rapidash. Hahahaha. I mean, without using a reference picture. What other pokemon do you like?

Hey, thanks! Heh, it's cool to have someone I can talk Pokemon with without them laughing at me I'm certainly not an expert - I lost interest after the Sapphire/Ruby batch came out (the whole Contest deal and extra stats and things confuse my ridiculously simple brain), and stopped watching the show after Orange League because it just got too repetitive - but it seems my interest has been piqued again They're just so... fun to draw. And write about.

I agree with you on the fanfiction thing as well - too many Sue and Stu trainers running rampant (although to me this is less annoying than the whole who-Ash-should-be-with debate. I've seen it escalate into none-too-pretty flamewars, which just boggles my mind because it's so pointless and not important at all to the story). I'm not overly proud of my fanfic on certain levels, but I do like to think I can at least write decently. I can link you to my fic if you'd like to read it (shameless plugging) as well as to other Pokemon fics that are excellent reads and really refresh and bring alive the whole world and your perception of it

Thanks muchly for the long comment and compliments. I used to like Eevee and co. a lot, and I still do, but with all the hype they've been getting it's made me kind of lose interest Right now I think my current great love is Furret. For a Pokemon you can pick up quite easily as a Sentret, it packs a lot of punch. As for the rest.. I'm honestly willing to delve into any one Pokemon, really. Thinking and reasoning out how they live and survive in the wild is just so much fun. *bounce*

Hehe, awesome. Yeah, it seems that the only peopel to talk about it with are...nonexistant, or something. Hehe. I own Emerald, but I never got very far. I just don't have that kind of time, y'know? I work all day, and when I come home, I want to surf the internet, or watch TV. Forget doing anything that involves thought. Hahah. But you're right- all that contest/blah stuff confuses me a lot.

If you'd like to link me, that'd be great. I'm working (very slowly, mind you) on a whole series of fanfiction for G Gundam. Bleh. I wish I had more time.

Espeon was a favorite of mine, actually. But you're right- everyone's all Gaga over them. It's so crappy. Furret is so cute! I used one... I can't remember what I named her, though. Bleh. Were you one of those trainers who nicknamed your pokemon?

I used to really want to do a pokemon Roleplay, ya know? Because they were so much fun. In a story-kind-of-way. Like third-person. Making two or three trainers meet up, maybe even join together... but unfortunately, my time is so blasted limited, that I don't have time to even think of RP posts to make. -_-;

I remember Pokemon Red (Blue and Yellow), and how you could find the pokemon in the (what was it? A house or something?) island. How there would be, like, a trillion of them. Hahaha. But seeing pokemon in the wild would be so interesting! I mean, like...would a Skitty eat a Spearow? Hmm...

One of the pluses about being an Animation major is you can be as geeky as you want and nobody thinks you're weird xDDD Star Wars? COOL! 80's cartoons? COOL! Video games? COOL! Pokemon is harder to find fans for, but I've got a couple

And yess, the games are addictive indeed. Terribly so. I only recently got into the games (I'm a late gamer in general) but they've definitely got a hook. I plan to try wrapping my head around Ruby/Sapph at some point, even though those dang contests and pokeblocks and whatever still confuse me. T_T

If I couldn't come up with good nicknames, I often just left it as was. I -always- name my starter, though In fact, Dante is what I called my first Cyndaquil xD Lanturn must have been such fun! I never used one, but the conflicting-type must have come in handy. I know it was one of my brother's favourites for that reason. I fell in love with Furret on Stadium and then was pleased to discover that it kicked quite a bit of ass in the GB games, too, while looking cute

Espeon has become such an insta-sue Pokemon that it annoys the heck out of me - the image it gets, not the Pokemon itself. I think that's another thing about the Pokemon fandom.. you see the same types used over and over. My trainer character had an Eevee originally, but I've changed her story slightly after fleeing in horror from all the Eevee-toting sues =_= I have this thing about the too-popular crowd. It's like, they have so much love already that I feel they don't really need my contribution. I could be giving it to some other character or species that needs it.

I was never an RPer, though trainer RPs could be fun. I just need to flesh out my character more, she's too simplistic for my liking right now.

That would be something I'd think about putting in, just to add a tinge of realism. I mean, the Pidgeys in my writing eat Caterpie, though I think that might have already been established.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ZebraRaine In reply to swift-whippet [2006-03-24 22:57:24 +0000 UTC]

Aren't the Caterpies...huge? I know Pidgeotto's do for sure, though, right? (In like, one of the first episodes, I believe that's stated) And wow. I had completely forgotten about the Insta-sue/Espeon/Eevee/Unbreon thing. I really don't blame you for changing it a bit. Keeping things complicated, but not too much, is always nice. You don't want a boring, simple character. Though of course, you are right. Give your love to an overlooked pokemon species.

Hehe. Ponyta used to be SO popular, you know? As a sue-toted pokemon, and among any-and-all horse fans. Hehe. I always liked Rapidash better. I used to think of ways to make my "own" pokemon unique. I could never come up with good names; leaving my Girafarig named "Crusher", my old Tauros named "Whiplash", and my Houndoom named "Killer". (I thought Killer was hilariously stupid, so I kept it). My Lanturn was named "Nightlight" (I was going to give her the German-spelling/word instead, but I kept forgetting how to write it). I always picked Cyndaquil, because he was SO cute!

I liked Chikorita too, but... but alas. Meganimium wasn't cool enough. I hardly ever use any grass-types, because they're just...so vunerable. And yes, Lanturn's water/electric type-self is really fun. Ground kicks her ass, though. Even though she's fairly quick, and can kick out a Hydro Pump like nobody's business. Haha. Dangit! You're making me want to play Pokemon again! *shakes fist* But I can't! I have too many fandoms! *Notices Silver and Stadium2 lying around* Ack! Ack!

I love being geeky, but I work in a factory with people 15-40 years older than me, sooo...yeah. There are quite a few Star Wars fans, though! (I loved the books and the original trilogy). And 80's? Awesome. Yes. My Little Pony...music... ^_^ (I shouldn't fit in with people that old yet!)

Thanks so much for the links! I'll check 'em out ASAP!

swift-whippet In reply to ZebraRaine [2006-03-25 04:05:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I did see that. Pokemon do prey on each other in established canon, really - Furret preys on Rattata, for example. *checked out Pokedex entry* xD

I wasn't into the Pokemon fandom community till recently, despite being a fan of the Pokeverse itself for much longer than that.. so I knew nothing about which Pokemon were insta-sue and which weren't. I would think Rapidash would have been more popular! Just because it's a OMGUNICORN and all =_= Haha! Cyndaquil rocked. I loved kicking Sprout Tower and Bugsy-bug ass with my Quilava xDDD

I want to play Pokemon so much too D: But I can't. As I said I only started playing recently, and it wasn't even on my own cartridge so I could never get further than Whitney. *annoyed* And my N64 blew up so I can't play Stadium anymore either. blarg. I know the feeling. I got into -as in REALLY got into - so many of my fandoms too late and now there's information overload and I can't catch up. o_O especially Pokemon because they spew out a new generation/movie every year it seems.

If you need someone to geek out with you can talk to me! LOL. *closet Care Bears freak, in denial about what they are doing to the show now* And I hope you enjoy the fics, too

ZebraRaine In reply to swift-whippet [2006-03-26 01:35:08 +0000 UTC]

I never really got into the pokemon fandom, only because I ventured there for fiction once...and I immediately wanted to kill myself. That was a few years ago (Maybe four years ago?), right after (or before) I started to write fanfiction myself, and...wow. I was a terrible writer, but a lot of the fics I found were worse! Haha, you're right! I would have thought that Rapidash would have been more popular. It's definitely more popular than Ponyta, though. I always thought they should have had a third evolution, that would have blue-fire, and be a unicorn-pegasus. Dorky, I know.

I really like some of the newest pokemon, but... it's so hard to keep up with the game; and finding the time to play, too, of course. My N64 is thankfully still working. The original one, too! We bought it...gosh, when it came out, and it still works. I still find that amazing. I've had less problems with Nintendo systems than our PS/PS2 and XBox. -_-

I always jump in a fandom really late! Except InuYasha- I think I jumped into that fandom a little early. I remember when they only had a couple-thousand fics. Now? Hahahaha...it's impossible to filter through all the crap. Do you own your own pokemon game? Whitney was my hero when I played Silver for the first time- I was a huge fan of normal-types, and she used them!

(Gosh, that's so geeky). And lol! The newer care-bears are...3D or something, right? I think it looks terrible. I barely remember the old cartoon, though.

I can imagine, if they're anything like what's in there now. I just stick to a few writers I know are good (the ones I gave you) and check out who they list as their favourite authors and stories on ff.net. It works for me, I've found some real gems that way
LOL! Well, at least the shiny Ponyta is blue-flamed (at least, I think so..? There's another thing.. shiny Pokemon. Where did that come from o.O).

I don't doubt that our N64 would still be working at this point if my brother hadn't plugged it in without the adaptor (we live in Asia, so all the plugs are 240V). It went 'poomp' and started bleeding fluid from its base. We were like, "....I think we killed it." Our cousin got hers long before we got ours, and hers is still working fine. We have an Xbox now, but I don't like it. T_T

Inuyasha is such a great show - it's wildly overrated and the fandom is full of morons, but the show is good. Although I primarily watch it for Miroku/Sango cuteness, so I am a little deprived. Sometimes I just want to shove Inuyasha and Kagone off the screen.

You know it's a funny thing, but my bro, my cousins and I created out own Pokemon league when we were just getting into the whole thing - we had our own gyms and Pokemon sets and we made little badges to give to our friends who defeated us xDDDDD hahahaha. We all laugh so much looking back at it now. Anyway - I picked normal as my own element, so I thought it was cool when Whitney came out in the Johto generation. (even if she's whiny and a sore loser.)
Nope, I don't have my own game - as I said, I got into the actual games way too late. I hope to get my hands on some old copies and give it a shot at some point, though!

YES. I hate what they've done to it. They've made them all ugly. And some of them have changed colour and tummy symbol, which freaks me out. (And sex. Funshine used to be female, if I remember right o___O)

ZebraRaine In reply to swift-whippet [2006-03-27 22:14:26 +0000 UTC]

That’s exactly what I do on FF.net Rarely do I venture into a new fandom and attempt to sift through a pile of stories. I do try to stick to a list of good authors—and their Favorites list can be of a lot of help. Chances are, if they’re an awesome writer, they won’t have a badly-written story on their Favorites. Of course, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes, though (like when you’re entering a fandom where you don’t know any of the authors), you don’t have a choice but to try to find something nice. That’s where the LiveJournal group, Fanficrants comes in handy.

You’re totally right. InuYasha is vastly overrated. It’s so clichéd, too. But it’s fun to watch. All of the characters are interesting, and have nice backstories, and they can be fun to draw, too. There are so many things you can do in fanfiction AND art! Sango/Miroku is my favorite pairing from that show- and I used to ship it like a crazed fan. (Which I was/am). Recently I got into the manga, and I find it to be especially useful in drawing (in my case, “attempting to draw” is more like it) those characters. Plenty of references from every angle! I used to write a lot of angsty M/S, which I find to be a lot of fun. Hahaha.

You made your own Pokemon league? Wow. My brothers and sister and I never really knew enough people who liked Pokemon… and we only had one GameBoy, to boot. So we were stuck. Stadium was nice, but even my little sister (who was really young at the time) could beat the one friend I had who played Pokemon. (My friend liked it, but she never knew anything about it.) My brother and I spent a lot of time strategizing and organizing teams. It was crazy! But we had a lot of fun doing that. We were going to organize a fanfiction piece about a kid who went on his own journey—blahblahblah, and he ended up actually meeting the characters from the show (Ash, Misty, Brock, Tracey, etc)—except they were a lot older (And some had kids).

I always thought the pokemon show could use more… “umph” to it. If they’d have put out an Adult Swim version of it—I would have been the first in line to watch it! The “OMG FRIENDSHIP” thing gets old in the show (which, for the first couple seasons was good, but later was ruined by stupidity). The games are awesome, but the show could have really played on how popular the games are. Take Cyborg009 (a really boring anime)…it’s for kids. But Kikader (which is almost exactly the same) used to air on Adult Swim. They could have done something like that for Pokemon, I’m sure. ^^

I hope you can get your hands on a pokemon game soon!

ZOMG you're on FFrants too?! Dang, that's like... one of my major haunts! I love reading what people have to say.. intelligent debate and insights are always interesting for me.

Oh believe you me, there's a crazed S/M fangirl somewhere inside me. She gets out of control sometimes xDDD And I really wish they got more attention in the series D: I love that show just because it's fun. Takahashi has been criticised for being repetitive, but for me that's what's fun about her stories And hey, in Inuyasha, there -is- character development going on (albeit slowly). It's not like their relationships are completely static, which is a big, big plus-point for me.

Yeah, we were funny kids. Did everything together. I can't remember what sparked it exactly, but it was tons of fun. I won some, I lost some.. it was cool Right now we've created new characters for the fic I'm writing, so I think that's going to be cool. I hope.

Oh yeah, the show is way too repetitive. I'd only watch it to get some idea of what the Pokemon are like (though even then I'd still 'umph' it a little xD). Well, maybe some gritty, PG-13 doujin would help a bit

Wow! That's cool that you're on FFRants! It can be a really horrible place, but sometimes it's not so bad. I never read/don't like yaoi/yuri/slash/incest/etc, and most of the people there, do. So it's a little weird for me. But it can be fun! ^_^

Hey, I'm not a big fan of slash, chan and incest either, but I've become a bit desenstitised to it already Besides, it's not like it's wrong in a fictional context (because, really, what is?) and as long as it's well-written, makes sense in context and has something to do with the plot, hell, I'll read it. Anyway, I like it there. I enjoy reading rants and (well-phrased) arguments
