Salamanders? So I take it you like Charmander?

I do, but that has not much to do with liking salamanders and a lot to do with liking cute fire PokΓ©mon. xD Wooper and Quagsire are based on real kinds of salamander, which are amphibians: [link] [link] [link]
I like that a lot of PokΓ©mon are based on cool animals that not many people might know of

I know, right? (Great photos and video, by the way!) Take Pikachu, for example. It's actually based off the small, mouse-like animal, the Pika. I think Nintendo got Pikachu's element wrong, though, as the Pika lives in craggy, post-volcanic areas.

*sorry, just checked - 'pikapika' is the sound of sparking and 'chuchu' is mouse squeaks, according to bulbapedia: [link]

I really don't think it is, for the simple reason that 'pika' is 'lightning' in Japanese and has nothing to do with the animal (pronounced 'pye-ka'). 'Chu' is 'mouse'. Lightning-mouse, plain and simple. 'Raichu' is 'thunder-mouse'.

Oh, my apologies *bows to your Pokemon wisdom* What other Pokemon names should I be more aware of in the future?
π: 0 β©: 1
swift-whippet In reply to Tiramia [2011-10-04 23:59:16 +0000 UTC]
Pffft no need to apologize. Pikas are cool animals and I'm glad someone knows they exist haha. It would be cool if they DID make a PokΓ©mon of some kind based on one. The Japanese names are interesting to look up the meanings behind, though some of them are pretty cringe-worthy - Articuno's name, for example, is FREEZER xDDD
π: 0 β©: 1
Tiramia In reply to swift-whippet [2011-10-05 23:41:57 +0000 UTC]
Seriously? Articuno means freezer?! That'd almost be sad if it weren't for the fact that it was the Americans who had to "Englishify(?)" the Japanese name for all the Pokemon.
π: 0 β©: 1
swift-whippet In reply to Tiramia [2011-10-06 05:08:11 +0000 UTC]
No no no, the Japanese name of the bird was simply the Japanese pronunciation of 'FREEZER' (fu-rii-za). From what I can see, the Japanese have a penchant for using English words randomly and this is an example. Similarly, Zapdos' Japanese name is 'Thunder' and Moltres' is 'Fire'. Imagine if they'd kept those names in the English version.
What they did for the legendary birds in the English version, at least from what I can see, was combine a word connected with its element with a number in Spanish. So: Artic(Uno), Zap(Dos), Mol(Tres).

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about the legendary birds' names and how they have the Spanish suffix added.
Dang, you're a right Pokemon professor! Where'd you learn all of this?

Observation, reading, and also knowing a little bit about certain animals. Bulbapedia even has a series of articles about the origins of some pokΓ©mon species that taught me a couple of things: [link] Fascinating stuff!

the colouring is so great Swift You're going to get me drawing again, I can just tell. ...I think my White team really needs to be drawn. It's... so unbalanced, generally 1/2 the team is Dark-type, then I have two flying types and one.. whatever I'm levelling up at the time xD I could definitely be a dark-type gymleader for sure.

AND IT WILL BE A DAMN GOOD THING IF I DO x) Sometimes we just need a break. I'm excited to see any new art from you, though!
Drawing fanart was in fact what got me back into drawing stuff for myself after a bit of a block - other people's creations just inspire you more than your own sometimes. I definitely recommend trying it. I need to draw my SS team also!

IT IS... Between your art and picking up watercolours again, .. and crossing paths with Coyote, I have been so inspired and I actually am enjoying drawing again.
It really has helped... that and the falcons that I adore! I have pretty much all the sketches done of my Black team, except Braviary 'cause he's just not cooperating. I kinda want to sneak in another in the corner, one of the ones I use from time to time... either Basculin [my water HM guy] or Clefairy [part of a catching-pokemon team 'cause she knows sing] ... hehe.

Well I can't wait to see what you post then! I think we're both a long way from where we were and who we were when we first met, so I'm sure you'll have lots of new developments to show artwise
Isn't it great when you love something and it just makes you want to draw? I haven't played B/W yet but I do look forward to seeing your take on the designs (a lot of which I find unappealing.. heh).

It would be interesting to see, and I think you're right. I look at things I have drawn recently, though, and wonder how I can draw like I used to. There's a particular inking and marker colouring style I did a whopping two times and I really want to replicate it! I sort-of got it when I used watercolours with the Harpy Eagle drawing I posted a photo of. Sort of. Looking at the B/W pokemon team that I drew, it's pretty much where I left off about 2 years ago with drawing cartoon-y stuff.
It really is! Many times, I find it's peoples' original characters, which is kind of how I got started on dA. I made an account and started watching different artists, loved their designs and drew some art for them. There's a few characters out there that I have come across recently that are begging to be drawn too... Sometime!
I really liked the storyline in B/W, the battle system is a lot quicker too, especially compared to Pearl [which is the other game I have been working on, but not since I picked up White]... I wish I started with a Tepig, since I like Emboar much much better than Samurott. Dewott is absolutely adorable, though.
I don't like most of the pokemon designs either, actually. My team usually is 50/50 with older generation pokemon, if not more so. I have to admit, I LOVE Zorua/Zoroark [esp. Zorua] and Emolga. Since catching Sneasel, she's been stuck in the team 'cause I <33s them. I was talked into evolving her into Weavile, and I really wish I didn't :/ I went along with it because of the increased stats and all, but weavile just isn't as appealing for me.
Plus, there's no new eevee-loutions, which stinks, 'cause there should be a flying eevee.. and my coworker wants a ghost one.
I was so excited to be able to be traded a bunch of pokemon from my co-worker from the older generations, 'cause it just wouldn't be the same without Charizard or Arcanine.

Aaw hugging Quagsires, so cute. I really like Torch's uniquely long snout. Jeoffry has some well-defined facial features, very big-cat-ish but still cartoony. Maia's pose amuses me mostly because the combination of the way she's holding her baby, and that clinched fist has part of me misread it as "I'm gonna punch this baby so help meeee!!" The satisfied Gloom is charming, I love the relaxed squishiness of it's body, the yellow highlights given off the impression of it basking in the sun.

LOL at Maia as baby puncher. That was meant to be more of a 'let's do it!' pose, plus Kangaskhan are badasses and I wanted to portray her as such, but that's funny. I do want to draw them again without half of it being struggling to get the design accurately.
I'm also pleased you like Jeoff, I personally find it difficult to draw big cats to my satisfaction so I'm glad he looks good to you And yes my Gloom β₯ that's what I was going for. I never liked them overly much until having one on my team, now I love 'em!

It's even more AWESOME on the DS!! if you have a DS and are at all fond of the second generation of pokemon games, you need to get on playing HeartGold/SoulSilver. they took what they had and made it better. GSC/Johto is my fav generation so I knew I had to try these Thank you
