Description
...and here's the second page I did! I might do another one, they were fun! The Celestial unicorns have such lovely colours, they're a joy to doAnti-clockwise from top right it's Atalanta the Dreamspeaker, her mate Numinor the Golden One, Rednal of the Red Band and Moloth, leader of the Shadow Unicorns. I enjoyed drawing and colouring them all. The author likes to give her unicorns superlong manes.. those were fun to colour

Very nice
I never heard of Mary Stanton but I love unicorns, so I might check it out.
I like Atalanta the most, her name is already awesome

They're oookay, definitely marketed to a younger audience. I read them when I was a lot younger and even then I didn't think they were the best things ever but I liked how the character designs looked in my head so I drew them anyway for the sake of practice. These drawings are pretty old too. xD

Gah! I envy your horses' eyes! ><' I cannot draw eyes on mine... They end up looking funny! So I've got into the habit of covering the eyes with forlock.

This was drawn several years ago. xD I think my drawing style's evolved since. Glad you like, though, thanks! As for drawing eyes, I advise you to practice anyway even though they might look weird. Draw from photos and see how real horses' eyes look and how they are placed on the face. If you keep avoiding the issue, you'll never be able to draw good eyes, and wouldn't it be better to learn how to do that?

I absolutely adore how you draw them; Numinor is amazing here!

Atalanta's more of a twilight-looking color. Lavenders and violets and such. But it could just be my computer screen.

she is lavender-violet in real life, trust me. scanners always affect colours a little.

! I used to read this series! I had up to book 8, and it seemed like something should happen after it, but I never found any book 9! I love the emotion you put into their faces, especially Moloth

Heehee, yeah. I always wondered whether there was actually a Book 9 I was missing or not o.O eh. cliffhangers.
The characters had such pretty coloouuurrs. o.O had to give them a shot, haha. thank you! and I'm glad that at least some people remember the books, as silly as they seem to me now xD

Mary Stanton had more books planned but Scholastic's contract with her ran out before she could finish her series. She tried to renew it be they wouldn't take her back on...so her story is lost for now.

Blueoriontiger In reply to swift-whippet [2011-08-07 09:52:51 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it is. I hope that someday somebody would pick up her series back so she could finish it. At least it wasn't bad writing on purpose that she left us hanging...
On another note, love how you did Lori's pouty face. That's so her. I love a lot of her witty commentary sometimes. Like the time they were at the in. "Listen here, unless you take Visa we're not paying, so we're taking a hike!"
Just finished reading Book 7 a few days ago (hence why I'm looking for fanart of it here) I've read 1-6 & 8 a looong time ago, probably 2002 but outgrew it. But it has partially inspired some of my fantasy settings, so I look at them here and there. So I finally close the arc... >.<

Thanks! I could probably do better now, this fanart is ooold, but I don't know if I care that much anymore unfortunately. :[
Yeah, I outgrew the books too. I think even when I was a kid I knew they weren't the best thing out there (the first book actually kind of bored me, I did enjoy the story a lot more when they went back to magical fantasy world xD), but I couldn't find much in the way of unicorn stories so I wasn't that picky then. I can't say it really inspired me that much (though if I'd read them when I was a little younger they probably would have influenced me more), but it's a nice nostalgia trip. I think I even drew this fanart at a time when reading the books was nostalgic for me, and now I'm even older.

Meh, I don't blame you. I'm like that with a few things myself. Was just rambling, not telling you to go redraw anything or such. >.<
And me being a guy, I didn't even care for Unicorns and stuff. My sister had gotten the book and I was like "Oh, why does my sister like this?" I "stole" it one evening and got hooked. Before I knew it she hated the series and it was me who was borrowing the books to read out what happened. And yeah, the "go back to magical fantasy world" is what was the seller for me. XD

Naw I know, don't worry about it My older work tends to get more attention than my new for some reason so I guess I like to remind people that I have done things since then! xDD
Hooray for fantasy books! Definitely something I still enjoy fondly.

I know, I was just looking at them a few weeks ago when cleaning out about 1000 books to take to half-price (I'm not exagerating, we still have a few thousand here) and the end of the 8th one could be taken as a final thing, but it was written as if it was meant to be continued- she never finished the story o.o

that's rather sad. For those of us that were waiting for more, anyway. o.o I'm probably going to introduce my little girl cousins to these books! I bet they'll love them

Well, my five bookshelves and 8 containers and piles weren't enough... so I got $50 and bought more books XD
Ahh, I want little girl cousins ._. The ones younger than me are all in middle school but one, and obsessed with boys and makeup. And Hannah is a 5th grader who doesn't care about reading... Maybe I should kidnap me some cousins *goes hunting*

Ahhh reading is awesome and anyone who doesn't like it is missing out, that's all I have to say and also that I hate it when kids get obsessed with growing up too soon. kids should be kids for as long as they can, because it's not something you can just go back to.

YES!!! Unicorns of Balinor fanart! Man, this makes me so happy, I used to read Unicorns of Balinor forever ago! But then I got to the point where I'd read all the books that were out, but the series wasnt finished yet, and by the time the author caught up, I'd outgrown them. But I was thinking of it again just the other day, so funny I should find this. I really like the way you did the manes on all four, they look really good!
