Just recently got back into re-reading the Unicorns of Balinor series that I read when I was younger. What's ironic is that I like them more now than I did before xD So the plot's a little kiddy, but whatever, I like the characters a lot, and truth be told, I really enjoyed reading them
Anyway, I thought I'd try drawing out some of the characters (I love drawing book characters because you can put your own spin on them
) as well as practice my colour pencils - my real media needs work! So here they are: Sunchaser with Princess Ari, Lori Carmichael, Basil and Dill the foxes, Tobiano, Tierza (I adore her colours!) and Lincoln the collie. I really wasn't sure of Lincoln's colours because the author doesn't seem too sure either, so I just made him tricolour -_-; may change his colours, though, because I'm not really sure it suits him. I really do like this except for a couple of things...the color you gave Arianna's hair is brown-blonde. The books (and the covers that show her) have her with a bronze color (like the Sunchaser, this was important in the books). Maybe I'm just being picky about it but there is one thing that is definitely wrong. Arianna's eyes should be sky blue and are described this way several times (at least once in every book).
Ok, I'm done nitpicking. I do like the unicorns, simple as they may be...I doubt I could do better. They'd end up looking retarded for sure...and I love the look on Lori's face. It's just so....her.

Heh. I don't even really like those books anymore - I never especially did, just thought the characters would be fun to try drawing - and I did these drawings years ago. I definitely understand feeling the need to correct details about things that you care about, but please also respect that this is old art and I've definitely moved on from it.

I know this is old, but I think you did a terrific job on these characters. Personally, I think Chase, Lincoln, and Ari turned out the best. I love that series too, and I own several books.

wow, this is amazing! I love Toby, he just get's to my heart. Chase looks a little like spirit they way you drew him. That's really cool, because Spirit was the leader of the herd, chase is lord of animals... good jpb, anyway!

Maybe, if I were TRYING to imitate Spirit. Truth be told, I didn't enjoy the movie that much. I would rather I had a more unique style for drawing horses.
I'm not saying that art can't look similar. Copying other people's art is a good way to learn things, if you know how to do it right. But I want my art style to be my own, and there's nothing wrong with that either.

I really love this! I just started rereading the series and your drawings actually look like the images in my head! Except I pictured Linc with a white around his neck and a white streak on his face but... ^^' I love it anyways! *favs* Keep up the good work!

Her descriptions in the books are actually really inconsistent and I learned that looking through them for reference. Probably why I don't really like them all that much, the characters are just fun. xD

I've only read the series up until the third book, but I did like them quite a bit - if only for the characters, as the plot was too kiddy for me. Tobiano was my favorite character, and Atalanta seemed to be too perfect. Great coloring, but the way, especially on Lincoln. How many Unicorns of Balinor books are there?

I actually didn't like the first book much because I thought the plot seemed weird. I kept reading the things for some reason though xD
There are eight. Supposedly she hints at more, but they just stopped there. anyhow, the characters are fun to draw and I will probably pass on the books to my younger cousins. they will most definitely enjoy them

yes first book I was actually annoyed at some points of how Arianna was such a push over and how Frank and Anne aren't doing anything to stop Lori'd dad from sending chase to the "glue factory" but Arianna gets so awesome later on in the series yet we do see her having insecurity after having a chance living somewhere elseΒ
