Description I'd wanted for some time to attempt drawing a Chinese dragon, or long, by referring to the 'nine likenesses', and so when East Asian Monsters was chosen as our theme for Tonight We Draw , I jumped at the chance. this picture got waaaay out of hand pretty early on, but I'm glad it did. I haven't finished a big illustration like this in a long time, much less one done for myself, and I couldn't be prouder.

the nine likenesses are: "horns of a stag, head of a camel, eyes of a demon, neck of a snake, belly of a clam, scales of a fish, talons of an eagle, paws of a tiger, and ears of an ox."
-[link]

some long fun facts I picked up - some I knew already, and others I found while I was bouncing around the net looking at stuff (you can tl;dr of course if you're not interested):

- long are carp that have managed to leap the Dragon's Gate, a waterfall along the Yellow River in China. the fish that make the jump are rewarded by being transformed into dragons (someday I want to make a proper picture of this). "the carp leaping over the dragon's gate" is a Chinese metaphor for someone that has worked hard and succeeded at his endeavors -- specifically in ancient times for someone who has passed the imperial examinations. this is also why we have magikarp and gyarados, hah.

- long are generally benevolent and wise (though not without some degree of vanity as a result). they are also water creatures and were believed by farmers to bring the rains, so sacrifices and offerings were made to the Dragon Kings to ward off drought. STOP MAKING THEM BREATHE FIRE, WESTERNERS.

- generally speaking, Chinese dragons have five toes on each foot, Korean dragons have four toes and Japanese dragons have three toes. supposedly, according to the Chinese, dragons originated in China and as they moved further away from home they lost toes until they had not enough toes to walk properly; according to the Japanese, dragons originated in Japan, and as they moved further away from home they gained toes until they had too many to walk properly. I'm not sure how true this is, but it amuses me. some sources claim that only the Imperial dragons of China had five toes while all lesser kinds had four.

- linking to this story/idiom because the site tells it better than me:
"In the Southern and Northern Dynasties Period (420-589), there was a painter called Zhang Zengyou. Once he visited a temple and painted on the wall four dragons, but gave none of them eyes. The onlookers felt that this was odd, and asked why he hadn't painted the eyes. He answered, "Eyes are crucial for dragons. With the eyes painted on, the dragons would fly away." Nobody believed this, so Zhang Zengyou took up his brush and added eyes to two of the dragons. No sooner had he finished than the two dragons flew into the sky amid a thunderstorm. The two without eyes stayed painted on the wall.
This idiom is used to describe how, when writing or speaking, one or two sentences will enhance the contents."
-画 龙 点 睛
(I'd like to make a proper picture of this someday too.)

I also want to draw some qilin/kirin and rui-shi ("fu dogs"), so yay!

First, I love the overall style of the painting. With the simple painterly background and the bright, primary color palette you used for much of it, you really captured the feel of a traditional silk painting. At the same time, you incorporated your own style and made it yours. I've always loved this kind of dragon and I can tell how much homework you did before you started - it shows in all the little details!

The little girl with both hands on the edge of the boat, looking up with a expression? That would so be me. *grin* Beautiful work. I'd love to see your version of qilin/kirin, someday!

Eee, thank you so much Scy it makes me so happy that you notice all the little things I put in. This was one of those images that pretty much made itself, I kept getting new ideas as I was working.

My qilin should be coming along fairly soonish! I mean to look up the differences between qilin from different time periods of China as well as from Japan.

No problem. Yeah, it can be pretty difficult, but I think, at least from the viewer's perspective, is came accross very nicely.
No kidding! Compared to other creatures, dragon anatomy is so flexible! So much more difficult to work with, in my opinion.

swift-whippet In reply to guidedoglover [2010-12-31 06:29:11 +0000 UTC]

<3 thanks, I'm glad you think that was good

heh, that's probably because dragons have no real anatomy since they're fantasy creatures, so to draw them in a somewhat realistic way we have to use and adapt anatomy from other creatures. I also used Chinese paintings of dragons as inspiration for how I drew mine. but that's also why the term 'dragon' has come to encompass such a wide variety of species in this day and age, people keep designing new ones inspired by birds and mammals as well as reptiles - quite fascinating really!

I agree! I find it fascinating how different artists portray dragons. Some are more bird-like, while some are like dinosaurs. They really are a great subject to just be creative with.

heh, my Chinese sadly isn't all that great, the result of rebellion against being forced to learn it in school (and it has atrophied from living in the States), but I have a basic grasp of it that I've been meaning to better by watching movies and reading books aloud you should take a class for the basics or something and then maybe we can help each other out by conversing!

This turned out great! As I said before in the livestream, I really like the feel of this pic and how it has an ancient look about it, like what you see in those Chinese watercolor tapestries (cant remember the name of them). I think you did a great job witht he scales, and I did NOT know about the head of a camel, horns of a stag thing, in fact I didn't know anything about the Long, and I think it's really cool and adds so much to this pic!! Also, I think you did a great job with the atmosphere!! Misty mountains, so gorgeous!

thanks so much, and thanks also for joining me in the stream, was great to see you! I was going for an ancient, epic look so I'm glad you mentioned that yeah, looked up some traditional Chinese paintings for some help with the scenery (though I'm certainly not as skilled or as patient as the old masters of that style!), and some photos of beautiful Guilin. I'm glad to infodump as always (since I'm so inspired by information of all kinds) so I hope you found that bit interesting

I love this! I love the colors and the people in the boat with their "omgyay" faces. The dragon looks so graceful too. I think this would make a great print.

I've always had a soft spot for the Asian dragons. The idea of a water elemental-type is so much more interesting than the evil, fire breathing hoarders of gold that western culture produced.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

swift-whippet In reply to Payna [2010-12-30 06:50:02 +0000 UTC]

thanks! <3 and I was thinking that too! not sure how I'd go about it, but perhaps

I think both types of dragon are very interesting; what I don't like is how a lot of Westerners (if you'll pardon me for saying so) tend to lump oriental dragons in with medieval type ones and give them the traits of the latter like hostility towards humans, treasure hoarding, and fire breath. oriental dragons are believed to be benevolent and wise (if somewhat vain because of this) and the emperors of ancient China have been long associated with them. I personally think that long are only dragons in the same way that kirin/qilin are unicorns - it's just an approximation, a name for the occident to call them because they somewhat resemble their own mythical creature. the one really has not much at all in common with the other. I think the only reason I can think of long as dragons is because the term 'dragon' has grown to encompass such a wide variety of creatures in recent times, thanks to so many creative people.

rambling, ack! I've been doing some research here and there about eastern dragons, both in China and other places (I'm attempting to make a Chinese dragonsona for myself ), and it's really interesting how much stuff there is about them. probably have to go and get some books out of the library for more details!

hahah I was one of those kids too, barely scraping through Chinese all my way through school, but I definitely regret it now. nothing to teach you a thing or two about appreciating your own culture like living abroad. still, I hope I'm making up for it bit by little bit. I'm trying to watch more Chinese movies and read books to make my Mandarin better, and I'd like to take classes or something for my dialect (Teochew) as well

thank you!! I'm pleased with how that turned out as well, and I'll be definitely drawing more dragons and beasties
