Henry Alrfred Ivatt is most known for his classes of 4-4-2 "Atlantic" locomotives. While this wheel arrangement had been used on tank engines since the 1880s. The C2 class was the first 4-4-2 tender engine in the British Isles and known as '''Klondikes" after the gold Rush of 1896. Including number 990, twelve were built between 1898 and 1900. One, number 271, was rebuilt as a compound, but was modified after unsuccessful trials. They were used on top link expresses on the East Coast Mainline until the arrival of Greseley A1s, A3s, and later A4s, but still found use on secondary services. The class was eventually withdrawn by 1945, but number 3990 is preserved today.
