While the Southern Railway was not a large freight carrier, it did handle some goods traffic, such as that out of ports such as Southampton and Dover, and while the S15s could handle much of the heavy express freight traffic, a smaller class was needed for lighter goods trains, resulting in Maunsell designing Q Class, his last design before retiring, leaving his successor, Bulleid, to build the 20 members of the class at Eastleigh from 1938-1939. These engines performed the lighter freight duties which the S15s were too impractical for, and did so until the end of steam on the Southern Region. One is preserved, number 30541, on the Bluebell Railway, and is currently operational.
