Description
This, my friends, is the cream of the Great Western crop. These engines' origins can be traced to 1906, when Churchward was working to build a new express passenger engine for non stop heavy expresses, such as those from London to the West of England and Birmingham. After testing some of his Saint Class engines rebuilt into 4-4-2 Atlantics against French-built De-Glehn Compounds, a four cylinder engine was built, number 4000, sharing the same boiler design as the Saints. 73 Stars were built from 1906-1923. The Stars were then developed further into the 4073 Castle Class, and that in turn was built into the ultimate Great Western express design, the 6000, or King Class, for the heaviest expresses. Fredrick Hawksworth even planned to develop the Kings further into a pacific known as a Cathedral class, likely to be numbered 8000, but due to the shape of the British economy after World War II, this did not pass.
