Description
This is a portrait of one of my favourite singers, Ani DiFranco (reference used), primarily in commemoration of International Womens Day, and secondly as a contest entry to The Pencil Club. I missed the IWD mark by like five days but it's not my fault. I blame the hair.Feminism
I also wanted to make a bit of a point, and figured a good place to do it would be the description of this portrait (Ani DiFranco is a feminist, in case you don't know). A lot of political discussion time, these days, is being devoted to reminding people of the proper definition of the term "feminism." A lot of people have lost grasp with what it actually means and this is because of many reasons. Feminists who recieve the most media attention are often the more out-going ones, who also tend to be a bit extreme and not necessarily properly representative of the ideology I'm referring to here. Also, a lot of people take proper feminism to be an encroachment on their lives simply because it is a major deviation from a norm we've been practising for centuries, and thus it is seen as extreme. Another reason is a lack of correct information, or perhaps just an unwillingness to seek out correct information. These are just some of many possibilities for why the term has become confused over the years with psychotic, male-hating, hairy-arm-pitted women who seek a revolution in hopes of leaving all men castrated and weeping into their beers.
That is simply not the case, and many people (including myself) seek to clarify. Feminism is simply the belief in social, political and economic equality of both sexes. A feminist wishes only to narrow the gaps in society that are products of a history of unequal distribution of treatment and resources. It is not a labelling of all men as evil, suppressive monsters; it is not hatred of the opposite sex; it is simply a desire for equality. Keeping this reality in mind, I would hope that all people, men and women alike, might identify themselves as feminists.
Etc.
Anyway, that's my civic duty fulfilled for the year. On to the technical crap. I'm actually satisfied with how this one turned out. I'm a bit unsure about the face, and there's too much of a contrast between the hair and the rest of the drawing; but otherwise I'm satisfied. I really enjoy working with tedius little details like the braids or the folds in the clothing, despite how long it takes. There is a tattoo on her chest in the original photo, which I tried to draw about fifteen times and couldn't get right. It was getting to the point where it was becoming too much of a burden on the paper and it wasn't fully erasing, so I had to just give up or risk ruining the final product. I should probably start my drawings with my weaknesses from now on, and do the easy stuff last.
Done entirely with a 0.7mm HB graphite mechanical pencil, and two paper smudging sticks on good old Hilroy 22.9 x 30.5cm. Signature added and darkened with Photoshop 5.5. Approximately ten hours.
The Pencil Club "Favourite Song" Contest
This drawing was my entry for the Pencil Club's contest that ended on May 11th, 2005. Unfortunately she didn't win, but it's understandable because there were some excellent entries from some extremely talented people, and the winning piece can be found here:

...and the full list of all of the entries are here: [link] .
So congratulations to the winner! And to all those who entered as well. And thanks to The Pencil Club for their community's work, the contest, and their consideration. I'm looking forward to the next one.

I love Ms. DiFranco and hope to meet her and I love this picture. I especially love the hair.
People thinks that feminists are women with hairy armpits, hate men, and think men are the lowliest creatures on earth. Feminists wants everyone to be equal not woman on top of men. Thats why I love Ani, she is a subtile feminist and beats out the feminist stereotype.

thank you so much for posting your clarification of what feminism is--I completely agree with you in everything you say here. I get so frustrated when people rag on "feminists" as though feminsts are bad, dirty people. If the general public only understood...

Thank you sooo much for discussing it here, feminism is indeed a misunderstood term, and thank you also for this fantastic piece of Ani, she is the biggest musical influence on my songs. Not just my songs, my life. She has been my rolemodel and I thank god that I chose one so strong and talented to show me what a real woman is. Living in a culture where tits and ass prevail, women tend to lose sight of what they really are.
The concept was heady, I'm sure you've noticed by these responses.
In terms of the art, very well done. You kept the key all throughout, my eye doesnt bounce from the lightest lights to the darkest darks, it takes its time finding her form. The folds in her clothing are fantastic and her stance alone just breathes her out. I love the graininess of the piece, fuzzed out like an old polaroid, or a mellow song hit with a little distortion in the chorus to define the pitch. Thank you for this piece, it shows your admiration and respect. It shows that I have a chance of being taken seriously just being who I am, despite my gender, for as long as people like you express equality so eloquently.

A lot of people seem to confuse feminism for misandry. It's sad, really, because feminism is such an important movement in the equality of all human beings.

I don't think i'm a feminist though when ever i hear the word i DO think "fem-nazi" and i often hear too much of the extremes... much in the same vein as minorities and the "equal rights".... it just seems like reverse discrimination to me... being a White male I'm the most attacted group out there apparently... *shrugs* I'm all for equalism though... not just gender but races... seriously the ONLY thing that bothers me is people who can't speak the english language well enough for me to easily understand, *shrugs*
as for the picture i believe this is teh first one in this style that the shirt and other details came out better than the face... must people seem to slack off outside of the facial region with such realism... so i just you've got the edge there... just put a little more time into the face is just doesn't look as real... just work on the shading a bit i guess..

Lovely. I'm going to see her again next Friday.
Nothing stirs up the poor Mistress of Merch like a straight male coming to the show and buying an Ani tee shirt.
She'll get used to me eventually.
The detail on the shirt and hair are especially asthetically pleasing.
Excellent job.

Wow, I actually learned something from your insightful description. Indeed, the term feminist was pretty vague for me, so thanks for clearing that up!
Anyways, onto the drawing. Probably the best part of the drawing is the folds in the clothing. It's very hard to get that to look just right, even for experienced pencil artists. In this drawing, you can actually "feel" the tug of the fabric as it stretches across her body. I see what you mean about the face. It's well drawn, except for the contrast as you mentioned. It's not that the overall hair is too dark, its only that certain parts of the hair are shaded too heavily compared to the rest of the portrait, thereby affecting the overall contrast in that area. More highlights could be shown in the hair and more shading could be done in the rest of the face.
All in all, it's a very good portrait with a gret idea behind it. Good luck in the contest!

Grear pose and character expression. Very dramatic. My only concern is the lack of shadows. Try to experiment on the diffrent gray tone values. The folds on the clothing can be improved also.

I love Ani and you didn't need you to eloborate on feminism.
Although I'm only one person. So maybe you did.
Alot of Deviants don't study sociology deeply enough to understand movements.
Ani would like it to.

There should be a bit more contrast; the blending is too even over the whole subject. Also, the wrinkles in the fabric of Ani DiFranco's shirt (the right arm, to be precise) look a bit stiff. Still, it's a good effort. I like the hair.
Also, I do believe in equality for the genders. Doesn't mean I call myself a feminist, though. The problem is that those who gather the most popular attention--the extremists--aren't on the fringes anymore. From what I've observed, they have effectively commandeered the movement itself. The real issues of importance, i.e., wage & salary differences btwn women & men, have been ignored by the likes of Catherine MacKinnon & Andrea Dworkin for ages now. They're too busy "deconstructing the patriarchy" (whatever that means) & agitating for restrictions on freedom of speech to pay attention to nonissues like the glass ceiling.

I come from a culture where the men are bigotted, and the women allow it to continue. From a culture where beauty queens are deified while great women like Arundhati Roy are labeled terrorists. I am born into a mindset where a woman is defined as Mother or Madonna, and if she is a deviant of these roles she is labeled Whore. I struggle to find my everyday-heroes, how many come in my shape, size and colour? The Indian Woman is a Deviant Art.
I never have to look too far to reaffirm my faith in huMANity. When I speak out, he tells me to do it stronger. When I scream out, he tells me to do it louder. When a man is man enough to stand up and say "yes, I am a feminist", the world gets that much better. When he is man enough to take my hand and love my difference, the world gets that much better. He makes me feel more Woman. And I love you, Thomas.
(I know I should say something about the actual drawing and not just your comment, but you've heard it all. Its perfect, the hair is perfect, I know it was difficult but look what perseverence can do! I, uh, particularly enjoyed the interesting hue of grey used in the central vicinity of the composition, it is very reminiscent of the Mechanical Pencil Art Era. She looks better without the tattoo don't you think? I'll send her a little note, she might want to do something about that.)
