I know. I once asked my younger sister, who is a Christian, if she had every read the bible. She looked at me funny and said, "No, why?"

It's a very comfortable way of feeling sure your life has a purpose without putting much of any personal investment in it. It's kind of weird- I read that in the USA, the most scripturally well-read groups were atheists, jews and mormons, in that order.

Most atheists in the US come from a religious background, so it's not too surprising to me. That's what happened to me- I was religious, I was losing faith, and then I took a good, close look at the bible. And then I was an atheist. It's kind of funny how much you can learn by turning away from something.
