Description
Once I learned how to do this, I just knew I'd have to make a tutorial out of it, because it's so much easier than I had ever thought it could be! I was so afraid of screen printing, but a friend (K8) assured me that it wasn't that bad when I'm doing it like this, and guess what? She's totally right! So here, I thought I'd share it with you - maybe now you won't feel so afraid to do it. And become addicted to it (like me).
Where to buy the supplies:
- Contact paper can be boughten at Target for like $7/roll, but similar stores should carry it. The rolls last a lot longer than I expected!
- Screen printing ink: You may be able to find this at a lot of place, but I always buy mine from Artist and Display . If you don't have one near you, they do have an online store. It's a great place that's been absorbing all of my money lately
- All the other supplies can be boughten at somewhere like JoAnn Fabrics or the like, they're pretty easy to find.
Just a note: Sorry for the watermark, but I'm still leary on things being used where I don't necessarily want them to be. All the photos in the tutorial are (c) me, except for the very last one, which awesome credit goes to Doll at AetasPhotography.net .
Feel free to link to this or whatnot, but please don't redistribute it without my consent.

Could I do this with a posterboard stencles instead of a contact paper one? If not, why do I need contact paper?

taeliac In reply to ChaostheoryEx1 [2010-01-27 19:37:31 +0000 UTC]
As far as I see, no, it probably wouldn't work. The contact paper sticks to the fabric, so you don't get bleeding under the edges, or buildup that would bleed when you remove the stencil. Also, the stencil can move, the contact paper adheres to the fabric, so that it doesn't shift.
If you're ever in doubt, try it on a small piece as a sample and see - I may be wrong, but I don't see it working very well

I'm always happy to help, however I can
If there is anything you get stuck on that you'd like to see a tutorial on, lemme know! Something as complicated is corsetry is beyond a tutorial (I'd have to do a book on it ) but if I can help, I definitely will (cuz if you're wondering about it, I'm sure other people are, too!)

This is really helpful tutorial, much quicker than what my kit tells me to do. That expects me to take roughly 4 days to do one print. Thank you for sharing this.

Hehe, yeah! Screen printing itself can take ages! If you have a screen already, though, a tip my friend who taught me this shared is that you can adhere these on the screen themselves to do regular printing with - they won't last as long as an emulsified screen would, but at least you can do short batches quickly

Woo thanks for this! This is helpful! I didn't know you can use screen print ink instead of acrylic paint with fabric medium. I don't like how it turns out with the acrylic paint Dx
Though I know another cheater's way of screen printing that requires you to own just one screen (or maybe screens in different sizes for different things).

taeliac In reply to Tsukino-sama [2009-07-28 15:01:41 +0000 UTC]
I'm with you I really dislike how the acrylic with fabric medium always seems to come out, it's so crunchy!
I just prefer to avoid screens and emulsion fluid all together It's such a pain to work with, for me, at least... maybe if I had more practice
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Tsukino-sama In reply to taeliac [2009-07-28 17:46:20 +0000 UTC]
Well the cheaters way of screen printing is quite simple actually. You make a stencil, place the screen over it and then spread the screen print ink and run the block thingy down the screen to print the stencil design. Then you just wash the screen and you can reuse it for some other stencils xD
It seemed easy enough, though I'm too cheap to buy the screen xP

I haven't tried it but I saw someone do it on youtube so it works for someone =O
Yea, it's even more crazy when you need 1 screen for 1 design xD At least this one you just pay for 1 screen and you're pretty much set.

I love this tutorial. I used your method for the border on a skirt that I'm making, and I repeated the pattern at least 20 times, with the stencil still going strong. Of course, my patter was very simple, but still, thank you so much for this tutorial!
[link] is my skirt, so it's an extremely simple design, but still, having the contact paper there made it way easier (especially when I have to repeat the design so many times), and it's nice to not have to worry about freehand painting them all the same shape.
I'll probably use this method again for another part of the costume. Anyway, thank you again for this.
I'm going to stop typing now.

nice little tutorial.
now say i'm painting gold onto thicker red broadcloth, would this work? i just don't want to waste fabric.
here's a picture of the design.
[IMG][link]
or would you suggest a different way?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to Harusho [2009-07-05 20:32:16 +0000 UTC]
Hrm... that's a little tricky to say - I think you may wind up having to do many, many thin coats of paint to get it to overlay the red and still be somewhat supple. I would actually recommend doing something like using this applique tutorial I did - [link]
This will allow you to use a bit heavier material like satin or vinyl for the gold, and then put it on nicer, and fully covered
I hope that helps!

sorry but did the link work? lol i tried it after and it doesn't work for me?
if it did work, then what about the large areas of the fabric that wouldn't be used and that would have large pieces of heat and bond on them? would i be able to peal of the heat and bond and use it for other areas of my cosplay?
lastly, do you sell two way interfacing like heat and bond on a roll by yard in the store? because i think i may need quite a bit. >_____<
also thank-you so much this was very helpful

StrawberrySiren [2009-06-22 00:40:18 +0000 UTC]
okay so i've found that fabric paint makes the fabric rather stiff. and for my project, i want it to be a little more flowy. is the screen printing ink more flowy? i don't think i'll need a very thick layer if that helps.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to StrawberrySiren [2009-06-22 17:11:52 +0000 UTC]
It definitely should work a lot better than the regular fabric paint - I needed it for the same thing, and if you do many very thin coats, and let them completely set up before adding the next, it works wonders and stays rather soft, not crunchy. The trick is the thin coats with screen printing ink!

taeliac In reply to bloppyblue [2009-07-08 22:26:35 +0000 UTC]
Oh! It definitely isn't too expensive to do it this way - I think the roll of contact paper is usually like $5 or $6, and the paints are between $3 and $5 a tub, depending on how big of a container it is... so it's pretty cheap to do it, versus regular screen printing, which the cheapest I saw for everything was like $40 for the screen, and another $10 for the liquid to do the outline with, and stuffs like that I hope it helps you out!!

Wow, thanks so much for the details Im hoping to try this method during the summer...
If it's not too much to ask, I was hoping you could answer another one of my questions...
How is the quality of this method? Does it fade in the wash, and how many washes. I know that iron-on patches could crack, but if screen printing doesnt give a huge difference in result, i might just go for iron-ons for price.

It might - you may want to test it, first, though ~ I had purchased some white screen printing ink that was supposed to go on opaque, but it still was see-through over red, so... yeah.
You may want to try the tutorial on applique instead - it's a bit longer of a process, but you can guarantee that it'll cover

I know that painting white on black can be irritating at best... but I need to do to ;_;
Would it be more cost effective to locate a thicker fabric paint for the solid white that I require? I don't really fancy the idea of slapping on white acrylic, and I have so many designs to paint that embroidering would KILL.
I probably have at least 167 individual white patterns to make O_O

okay, so. I've been wanting to try screen printing, and have been looking at the kits for it at DickBlick and omg. prices. I've been looking into that for like a month now, and JUST REMEMBERED you had this. /dumb
Now all I need to do is get... well, everything. Oh, question. Can screen printing ink be used over screen printing ink? Like if I did a red base, set that, then later did a black design over it, would that work?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to trashball [2008-11-20 16:30:41 +0000 UTC]
Well, I'm glad you remembered - this is much cheaper... I was considering getting a screen, too, to play around with, and freaked out about the price (again).
Yes! You most definitely can - the difficulty is when you're doing a light color over a dark, then sometimes the dark shows through, but that happens with regular screen printing, too, as far as I have seen, so... yeah They're thick and opaque, but with this technique, you may need to do a couple of coats to get the same "thickness" that you get with a screen and squee-gee!
