Description Once I learned how to do this, I just knew I'd have to make a tutorial out of it, because it's so much easier than I had ever thought it could be! I was so afraid of screen printing, but a friend (K8) assured me that it wasn't that bad when I'm doing it like this, and guess what? She's totally right!

So here, I thought I'd share it with you - maybe now you won't feel so afraid to do it. And become addicted to it (like me).

Where to buy the supplies:
- Contact paper can be boughten at Target for like $7/roll, but similar stores should carry it. The rolls last a lot longer than I expected!
- Screen printing ink: You may be able to find this at a lot of place, but I always buy mine from Artist and Display . If you don't have one near you, they do have an online store. It's a great place that's been absorbing all of my money lately
- All the other supplies can be boughten at somewhere like JoAnn Fabrics or the like, they're pretty easy to find.

Just a note: Sorry for the watermark, but I'm still leary on things being used where I don't necessarily want them to be. All the photos in the tutorial are (c) me, except for the very last one, which awesome credit goes to Doll at AetasPhotography.net .

Feel free to link to this or whatnot, but please don't redistribute it without my consent.

okay i just tried this out on a test piece and all i have to say is THANK YOU SO MUCH!

i've always hard a hard time painting on fabric because my "stencils" were always bad. i ruined a whole jacket for cosplay just because of this (and had to start over on it) but my test strip looks BEAUTIFUL!

the contact paper is the best THING EVER! i didn't get anything outside of my lines. it's my savior and i just want to say THANK YOU AGAIN!

oh and i got my screen print ink from
[link]
it's not too bad a price, on sale right now. incase you want to put for anyone who is looking for it. i got the gold and it's beautiful!
i'll definitely show you when i'm finished

again thank you so much <333333333

i have a question about the screen print ink, just because i want to try it and i don't want to mess it up.

what brand did you use
and what color? i'm trying to do yukito from tsubasa and his design has about the same color and i'm curious to what color you used. i've been looking on that online store you mentioned but i couldn't find the kind you used? i just want to make sure that i know it'll work, you know?

taeliac In reply to ikoroseshinsou [2008-10-28 02:28:55 +0000 UTC]

I don't know exactly what brand this was - I believe it is Jacquard metallic ink, but it was something I pinched from school to use and returned quickly thereafter

Anything that is a more "old gold" would work really well, I think I'm sorry I can't be more help!

that really helps. but it can be made perminent right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Beka-sama [2008-10-22 17:39:39 +0000 UTC]

Yep! All you have to do is heat-set it with your iron! If the container of screen printing ink doesn't say how long, hold an iron on medium for about 30 seconds everywhere you put the ink, and then throw it in the dryer for a few minutes, if you can - that will help set it even more!

Where did you buy the screen printing ink? I've been looking because I want to try this out but I haven't seen any at the craft stores I usually go to... or maybe I haven't been looking hard enough..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to dogzfreak [2008-10-07 23:55:49 +0000 UTC]

I usually wind up buying it at Michaels, or the larger JoAnn Craft Stores may have it, I'm not sure... otherwise, you can order it online from somewhere, but if you have anywhere that sells like craft-y stuff like models and whatnot, they may have it, too

That's stenciling, not screen printing. There's a difference.
"Screen Printing, Screenprinting, silkscreening, or serigraphy is a printmaking technique that uses a woven mesh to support an ink blocking stencil. The attached stencil forms open areas of mesh that transfer ink as a sharp-edged image onto a substrate. A roller or squeegee is moved across the screen stencil forcing or pumping ink past the threads of the woven mesh in the open areas. A screenprint or serigraph is an image created using this technique."

Also, that is why it is tagged as "Fakie" screen printing - please read the tutorial for more of an explanation!

taeliac In reply to genkaku-kun [2008-08-30 03:47:16 +0000 UTC]

Well, as I've responded to everyone else who has gotten technical about it, it is a tutorial on how to get the same effect as screen printing without the huge cost of buying the screen, setting it with the goo, making sure it turns out, and then having to print it. It is meant for people who, like myself, would otherwise be intimidated by the process. Kudo's to you if it doesn't scare you - please, do a tutorial on screen printing! I would love to know how to make *good* frames, and set the goop up well Making the frame in a 4 foot by 2 foot piece was what scared me away from doing it for the project I pictured here, but if there is a simple, affordable way, I'd love to learn!

This is meant for costumers who want the effect, without the huge investment and "scary" aspect of printing

genkaku-kun In reply to taeliac [2008-08-30 04:29:52 +0000 UTC]

I'm aware of that, but some people don't seem to be. In that case it should be a "How to Stencil" or "How to Imitate Screenprinting Without the Mess" tutorial. The least you could do is clearly address this in the description.

taeliac In reply to genkaku-kun [2008-08-30 15:34:30 +0000 UTC]

Umm... it's called "Fakie", as in "fake"... I thought that made it pretty clear that it was, indeed, not screen printing My bad.

I feel your pain there! I know now that I'm not in a painting/dying class, I feel weird doing it without the supervision of professionals This way, significantly less chance of screwing something important up

Hey awesome! My girlfriend and I are doing the exact same costume in over a month for a convention and when I saw the small picture of your design on the DD page I knew what costume it was. If you don't mind I think we will use the screen printing technique as well. How helpful your tutorial is!

Congrats for your DD, your tutorials are always great and you surely deserved it!!
Just one little thing... if I don't bother you too much! You said that acrylic + textile medium is not good, and I surely believe it... but, you had bad results with specific textile colours too? I've always used them (I trace my drawing or design on the fabric and then go with my brush^^) and everything went fine... but, you know, I'm the one in charge of textile painting in my cosplay group, so I'm always open-minded for new solutions and tips!
Thank you for havin' read this!^____^

Very good tutorial~! This would be very helpful for my cosplay.

Question though, if you use screen printing paint for your cloth, will the paint or design be damaged if washed? Will it fade away or will it remain permanent and undamaged on the cloth?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to Lumella [2008-08-30 03:51:08 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! I'm happy that it may help you out!

It shouldn't affect anything if you set it correctly - I have the instructions for it towards the end of the tutorial, but basically, press the fabric after the ink has dried (give it a good 24 hours, especially if you live in a humid climate) and then throw it in the dryer for about 15 minutes, and that should set it. I've washed those tails that I had painted multiple times, and it hasn't faded or bleed or anything like that

Well, this would definitely be a not-so-scary way of doing it Just be sure you have something between the front and the back of the shirt, to keep it from accidentally sticking ~ I forgot to do that one time, and it was not fun
