Description
Once I learned how to do this, I just knew I'd have to make a tutorial out of it, because it's so much easier than I had ever thought it could be! I was so afraid of screen printing, but a friend (K8) assured me that it wasn't that bad when I'm doing it like this, and guess what? She's totally right! So here, I thought I'd share it with you - maybe now you won't feel so afraid to do it. And become addicted to it (like me).
Where to buy the supplies:
- Contact paper can be boughten at Target for like $7/roll, but similar stores should carry it. The rolls last a lot longer than I expected!
- Screen printing ink: You may be able to find this at a lot of place, but I always buy mine from Artist and Display . If you don't have one near you, they do have an online store. It's a great place that's been absorbing all of my money lately
- All the other supplies can be boughten at somewhere like JoAnn Fabrics or the like, they're pretty easy to find.
Just a note: Sorry for the watermark, but I'm still leary on things being used where I don't necessarily want them to be. All the photos in the tutorial are (c) me, except for the very last one, which awesome credit goes to Doll at AetasPhotography.net .
Feel free to link to this or whatnot, but please don't redistribute it without my consent.

Hmm... I never thought of screenprinting like this, for me it's always been with a silk screen and squeegie. But this is kind of the reverse, which is probably easier for people who don't have the funds to buy the silkscreens and frames etc.
Great tutorial though!

That is exactly it - I could never afford the screens in the huge or weird sizes I'd need for whatever random project I was working on, and a friend of mine in a Fibers program explained this way of doing things, and I've been hooked ever since.
Significantly less re-use value (although you can use them about 6 times before they go "bad") but if you're just doing one or two things, definitely not too scary
Thank you!

ha great ! i've done some stenciling/ screen printing with a friend and she was telling me about contact paper solutions.. Though it can be tricky with some fine design that can rip easily when the sticky side is opened... What i was wondering is : can it be used several times after that or doesn't it stick as well ? I did once a stencil on contact paper but finally used it without tearing it open because i wanted to use it over time. Do you have a long time solution for it ?

taeliac In reply to Idrils [2008-08-29 16:51:37 +0000 UTC]
Yeah - the tiny stuff can be a little tough, but if you're really careful to peel it out, it's not too bad - plus, as it's sticky, it's not too bad to just kind of... stick it back together, if the tear isn't too bad (I did that quite a bit with the one in the example).
They do have re-use value, even with the sticky part. I found I can reuse the regular stick on the contact paper about 3 times, and then, I would spay a thin coat of a water-based adhesive used for applique, made by Sulky, onto the back of the stencil, and it would stick again for another 2 uses or so, with a little "touch up" spraying in places that just don't want to stay down That was the best I could come up with~

But, it is a way for people who are too afraid of screen printing (either due to cost, or due to fear of making the screens) to achieve the exact same effect, using the same paints Much better than smacking acrylic on a costume~

!!! we were needing to make some T-Shirts here in the near future and this is JUST what we were looking for! I can think of SO MANY costumes that this would help.
I've never done any screenprinting before... how opaque does this stuff turn out?

taeliac In reply to AerithReborn [2008-08-20 16:36:50 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, see, I have this fear of real screen printing... making the screen, and all the crap that goes with it... I can't do it I like my cheater method
Well, even one's that claim to be opaque really don't turn out that dark, to be quite honest... I think fiber content is more important in those cases; a polyester suiting definitely doesn't take well to screen printing ink, I found out the hard way. Cottons and similar aren't too bad, but you may need 2-3 coats of paint. Just be sure to keep them light, and press between coats if you can; that way, it will stay soft and not look like goop'd on paints XP

I'm thinking about making some shirts for a convention event in the next year, and it's red on black. Hrmmm... I'll probably go by the art store here in the next week and possibly pick some up to play with.
Also, how would this work on vinyl? At all? I'm looking at hand painting designs with acrylic, but I've had bad experiences with that before. :sigh:

taeliac In reply to AerithReborn [2008-08-20 23:10:42 +0000 UTC]
I've never actually used it on vinyl before, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Otherwise, you can try to find that iron-on stuff, like flocking, that they use for sports jersey's to put names on it - I know that you can buy it by the roll type thing, I'm just not sure where, as I haven't had a need for it yet

I'm happy to help! I know I hate regular screen printing - too much money up front, and too much chance for screwing up
This way, takes longer, but so much easier (and cheaper
)

It definitely is pretty easy to do, and if you're careful, and do a couple of different pieces for different colors or where they overlap, it's not too bad. I still like it better than actual screen printing, because it's just easier, and less supplies
If you have any suggestions or if you find anything out if you do try it, let me know, please, and I'll add it to the tutorial
Thank you for the fav on it, too

I always put it on too thin, which irks me to no end. I really like the results from regular screen printing, but I suck at it *sigh* I hope this definitely helps you out - heh, do you have a friend there still who could yoink you one? I know I'm fearing that after this semester when I graduate - I will no longer have unlimited access to snaps and hooks

Midori84 In reply to taeliac [2008-02-25 03:20:22 +0000 UTC]
Nope, none of my friends are taking a printmaking class this semester and at this point I don't know anyone that will loan me materials. I guess somewhere in there I will have to go shopping for supplies (I keep getting coupons from Utrecht that I end up not using...).

taeliac In reply to Midori84 [2008-02-29 05:17:51 +0000 UTC]
I know how that goes - those coupons are just too tempting!
Have you ever made your own screens, like, from scratch? We learned the theory behind it, but I haven't actually got to try it... XP

Midori84 In reply to taeliac [2008-03-01 02:10:50 +0000 UTC]
Yeah...I've got a 20% off coupon somewhere, lol...
I haven't either. The print shop has a bunch of old screens that are just cleaned and reused - I never got the chance to make one.

dogzfreak In reply to taeliac [2008-01-26 18:13:11 +0000 UTC]
you can mix bleach and water in a spray bottle, which i haven't done yet but i've seen results, or you can use a clorox cleach pen and just fill in your design with it. I used this [link] to guide me for most of it.

I was definitely the same way (and, real screen printing scares the heck out of me, to be quite honest... so expensive and the photosensitive stuff is a pain... blah!) -- it does work for stuff like that! Just remember, if it's on something dark, you'll have to do more coats, or use a more opaque paint
What costume are you working on, may I ask?
