Description
Once I learned how to do this, I just knew I'd have to make a tutorial out of it, because it's so much easier than I had ever thought it could be! I was so afraid of screen printing, but a friend (K8) assured me that it wasn't that bad when I'm doing it like this, and guess what? She's totally right! So here, I thought I'd share it with you - maybe now you won't feel so afraid to do it. And become addicted to it (like me).
Where to buy the supplies:
- Contact paper can be boughten at Target for like $7/roll, but similar stores should carry it. The rolls last a lot longer than I expected!
- Screen printing ink: You may be able to find this at a lot of place, but I always buy mine from Artist and Display . If you don't have one near you, they do have an online store. It's a great place that's been absorbing all of my money lately
- All the other supplies can be boughten at somewhere like JoAnn Fabrics or the like, they're pretty easy to find.
Just a note: Sorry for the watermark, but I'm still leary on things being used where I don't necessarily want them to be. All the photos in the tutorial are (c) me, except for the very last one, which awesome credit goes to Doll at AetasPhotography.net .
Feel free to link to this or whatnot, but please don't redistribute it without my consent.

Aw! That is so cute - I love all of the little details on that one! Painting them on would definitely be a lot easier than doing anything else, like stitching them in place XP

um..... where is your screen? I'm not sure you can actually call it screen printing, but it looks like an interesting variation on actual screen printing. Whatever works I guess.

It's not actually screen printing - it's more like it for those who are phobic of messing up the screens, like I am. It's more stenciling than screen printing, but I was told that it's essentially the same thing, only takes a lot longer and the stencil won't last as long (maybe 3 uses, I've found out)
It was meant to be a reference for people who tend to do the 'acrylic paint + textile medium + hand painting on fabric = fail' way of getting designs onto cosplay..

I wished I had read this when I made my Hikaru Minamoto (otogi zoshi) costume. The fabric paint said to set it with an iron but it sure didn't say how and for how long! Threw it in the wash after quickly ironing it, and bye bye hard work (paint went all over the yellow fabric).
Thanks for doing this, now I know exactly what to do for my next costume!

Hrm. Well, usually then, I'd just kind of imporvise - use what you can see, and then just add to it until it feels complete, or the way you like it.

Just one question, is it possible to do a digital design then trace it through, with outlines for different colours, like paint by numbers sort of thing.
Still this'll help greatly in making merch for the band I'm in, and the one I sort of manage.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to CyberwasteFX [2007-09-22 13:31:14 +0000 UTC]
I'm actually not too sure - you'd probably want to do multiple stencils for the different colors, like you would with screen printing. Or, if the colors are far enough apart, that wouldnt' be an issue, then. But, basically that's what I wound up doing to get the design symmetrical -- I went into Illustrator, drafted the design and then mirrored it, and printed it out, and put that behind the stencil and traced it
If you're doing more than maybe 3 or 4 of something, you'd probably want to check out how to do actual screen printing - these stencils tend to only last for maybe 6 printings if you're really careful with them, and they're smaller, because eventually the lint starts causing them to be weird. The screens would last signficantly longer, and go a lot faster, since you're just swiping the ink across the screen, versus basically painting it in.

Can I ask your advice? I want to do Xemnas' boss form from KH2 (for lack of...any reference pictures, I'll link 2 pictures from a Xemnas I met, and I can say her costume was awesome 1: [link] 2: [link] )
And I wans to know if I should use this tutorial or use transfers, because I don't want it shiny, and I want it the perfect shape...thanks in advance!! :3

taeliac In reply to MissLaneyLuck [2007-08-27 15:32:45 +0000 UTC]
I actually believe that the screen printing/stencling would be how I'd do it, personally - that way, you can get them to be the same if you either cut the stencils at the same time, one on top of the other mirror imaged.
Otherwise, you could make all the black pieces out of fabric, and fuse it on with a lightweight interfacing meant for doing applique's on quilts (I can't remember what it's called right now, though - I used it for [link] ) and stitch down the edges, although that would be horribly tedious and it does run a risk of shifting a bit.
If you're going to use the screen printing/stencling technique, I highly recommend finding screen printing ink versus mixing acrylic with textile medium - I've noticed that makes things look huge and lumpy, versus the ink that really keeps it thin. It also isn't really shiny, either, unless you are using a shiny fabric as a base.
And that outfit kicks butt. I really love how it looks!!

Most art supply stores carry it - I'd try calling around. Michaels used to carry it, but I'm not sure they do any more XP I get mine from a small-ish art store called "Artist & Display", but if you have a Utrect art in the are, they should have it, too (or you could order it online from them - very fast shipping!)

Well-written, well-illustrated, and most of all: useful. Awesomeness
Just out of curiosity, do you know if this stenciling approach works with bleach instead of the screen printing ink?

taeliac In reply to flutterbyfae [2007-07-10 20:22:36 +0000 UTC]
You know, I'm not positive, but I have something I need to try with bleach, so I'll give it a shot!
I would think, if you were using a Tide Bleach pen or something of that sort (where it's a thick goo, verus being runny) that it might just work! I'd be alittle worried with it breaking down the adhesive on the stencil, though.
I'm so gald you find it useful!! Thank you

flutterbyfae In reply to taeliac [2007-07-21 22:21:58 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the suggestion! I have a few other things to start/finish up before I get to bleaching, but the bleach pen does sound like the best option so far. I didn't even consider that it might break down the stencil's adhesive (I've been too worried about it damaging the fabric itself) but that's a very good point.
Keep up the good work

Ya know, you could fake bleach it out - you could apply just a lighter or white color paint, to make it look kind of bleached out...
I might have a thing I have to do something similar on in the near future, so I'll definitely post up the results
