Description
Well, I have this huge list of tutorials I want to make, and this was the first one a whim took me to strike off my list.Yes, it is wordy.
Yes, it requires you to do math.
Fair warning. (sorry, I be angsty about some people sometimes)
This is for making a skirt out of a full circle (or just about). These skirts are wonderful - they're very easy to do once you're used to them, and they're fast and very fun to wear. If you do it where you make it longer, they're so much fun to twirl around in.
Within this tutorial is how to sew it together, how to figure out the inner circle (this was my bit o' math voodoo in school), the length, and most importantly, yardage estimates.
I hope I covered just about everything you could need to know - I'll hopefully have a supplement to this in a few days about how to take this, and use it to create pleated skirts for those of us who can't wear traditional one's - our hips are too large! Circles make a wonderful way of doing that, combining the fullness you usually want in a skirt with the pleated look that most uniforms require.
Other useful tutorials that work well with this:

This really helped me out! The skirt I made was more of an oval, but same idea. [link]

Thanks so much for posting this, I'm going to try to make something with this soon~! Btw, I was wondering if I could make a petticoat this way? Actually, it's not a true petticoat, I just want a really floofy, airy skirt xB.

You definitely could! You would probably want to add a row of ruffles to the bottom of it, if it really needs to support anything, but otherwise, you can indeed

Yup. ^^
I'm having a Halloween party this year, but to make it a bit different than the techno/black light parties I've been having I'm making it an outdoor tea party with an Alice in Wonderland theme, so everyone gets to go as a character from Alice. I'm [hoping to] create a Queen of Hearts outfit for myself. :3
I also have the fun of helping my friends created their March Hare and Jabberwocky outfits. Woopie! x33

Oh wow, this is wonderful! This makes things easier, specially since my friend and I fell in love with your Lilac Waloli outfit. We're basing the Waloli outfit my friend will be wearing to a con on your Lilac one (Not an exact replica, of course, it's with our own flair. But yours is certainly a great inspiration) The costume isn't needed for another 9 months (The convention she's wearing it to is in April) but we're getting ready and looking at mock-ups now so we can get an idea of what will need to be done for the final. But when/if we do get it finnished I'll put the photos up on DA with a link to your wonderful inspiration of a dress

I want to learn about sewing. can I ask? Is it able to do without sewing machine?
I want to cosplay Melvina from GrowLancer ( [link] ) but I confused how to make her shoulder part. Is this tutorial able to make that? Thx for Ur advice. ^^

taeliac In reply to Shirei-Shou [2008-07-12 16:03:09 +0000 UTC]
No problem - I hope it helps!
You are definitely able to do the skirts (so long as you're not using a really heavy fabric) by hand, it will just take longer
I'm unsure what shoulder part you mean, on that costume, though~ it's kind of a big one to start with if you haven't sewn before, to be quite honest

Umh.. the one that looks like balons. Thats my main problems. I already make the purple part now the white upper part still confuse
ahaha indeed. But ask tailor to sewing for me very expensive ^^

taeliac In reply to Shirei-Shou [2008-07-12 16:26:33 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, I understand that one!
Well, the sleeves aren't really poofy circles, although you could kind of do it that way, too - your best bet, for those, is to look for a sleeve that has gathers at the top, so it poofs out a lot, and then to gather it to fit the main sleeve lower down, and having the gathers on the top and the bottom will give you the poof needed for that

This sounds awesome, and actually really simple. I'll have to show my friend who just bought fabric to make a random skirt, but I don't think she's started yet, and we can easily find more fabric as well. n_n
Perfect timing!

taeliac In reply to FutureCarrotLab [2008-07-09 13:49:48 +0000 UTC]
Hooray! Ya, it really is a lot more simple than... well, just about any other type of skirt (no worrying about gores, and waist size, and curves, and whatnot XP)

FutureCarrotLab In reply to taeliac [2008-07-09 16:37:06 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, no kidding Though she's super tiny, she doesn't have curves xD or the ones she does are super small.
Don't worry though, we're fattening her up xD (women should not have corners!)

this is really awesome ^^ but a little hard to follow in one go, when i start thinking about math i always go way too deep into it, not that i really like math or anything but XD i guess i'm just weird like that, anyway awesome tutorial

Yah, I know what you mean ~ Just try taking it in chunks, and don't over-think it, and it's not too bad If sewing has taught me anything, it's not to bother overthinking maths

When are you going? We might be able to meet up with you!

I'm definitely going to be doing pleating one's - one on just how to make a straight, knife pleated skirt, and then one on how to modify this idea a bit and make a pleated skirt for people with hips

You know, you could just make a purple top, with poofy sleeves, and put the skirt on it, and you'd have the Wallmarket Cloud outfit
Such a cute girl he is XP
