Description
Well, I have this huge list of tutorials I want to make, and this was the first one a whim took me to strike off my list.Yes, it is wordy.
Yes, it requires you to do math.
Fair warning. (sorry, I be angsty about some people sometimes)
This is for making a skirt out of a full circle (or just about). These skirts are wonderful - they're very easy to do once you're used to them, and they're fast and very fun to wear. If you do it where you make it longer, they're so much fun to twirl around in.
Within this tutorial is how to sew it together, how to figure out the inner circle (this was my bit o' math voodoo in school), the length, and most importantly, yardage estimates.
I hope I covered just about everything you could need to know - I'll hopefully have a supplement to this in a few days about how to take this, and use it to create pleated skirts for those of us who can't wear traditional one's - our hips are too large! Circles make a wonderful way of doing that, combining the fullness you usually want in a skirt with the pleated look that most uniforms require.
Other useful tutorials that work well with this:

I'll make sure to do that!
If I can find some old fabric/clothes in the right colour I might get to work on it tomorrow, you got my creativity boosted up

Definitely do - it's really easy once you get the hang of it (the elastic-waisted is easier for the first time try, but after that, it's really simple )

I would like to say THANK YOU!! I'm only an amateur in sewing and was trying to come up with a way to do a certain cosplay's skirt. This is very helpful! Thanks!

I'm so happy this would help! I use them for cosplay all of the time, when you need something to be super full Lemme know if anything is confusing or whatnot, so I can improve the tutorial!

Cool tutorial. I've made these type of skirts before. I always give myself about 3 inches of ease cause I have issues with fitting still.

taeliac In reply to nemesaii [2008-07-03 15:54:50 +0000 UTC]
Ya, that's not a bad idea - do you put elastic in the waist, or a zip?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
nemesaii In reply to taeliac [2008-07-03 17:02:52 +0000 UTC]
well sometimes elastic, but mostly zippers. It's alot more comfortable wearing zippers I think.

taeliac In reply to nemesaii [2008-07-03 17:10:46 +0000 UTC]
Naw, I hear you on that one! You know, you can add a little bit of elastic to the waistband if you need it to fit a bit snugger, but can't get the pattern there 100%~ just a bit, and it pulls it in!

Hm. Can I just say that if I could actually FIND fabric like you have illustrated in the diagram, I would totally make a skirt out of it. ^_^

Circle skirts are pretty and easy, but when a pain to sew 9 yards of bias tape to the bottom edge. Never again!

I only have the two skirts, and only one is moderately full enough to be fun to wear with my dress coat and tailcoat, so I've been thinking of making my own.

hee so cute! maybe i can actually wear a dress that won't look terrible on me ^^ question, would this pattern work for a high-waist dress?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to BelovedShadow [2008-07-04 16:01:01 +0000 UTC]
Hrm... well, they definitely look good on everyone! But, for a high waisted dress, it kind of depends on body shape and whatnot... I'd say, give it a try out of really cheap fabric and see how it works! You'll just want to measure where you want the skirt to connect to the top, and use that for your circumference measurement

And, oh boy, I can do the kimono stuff and those others great skirts with this tutorial?! Hard to believe! But this is a really helpful tutorial. Now I could make a matching skirt for one of my outfits and my mom would stop saying I'm no use at traditional house work like sewing and cooking, 'cause I'll show her I can sew ^^
I've got only one question: what do you mean by "2.5 circle" or "two full circles" (at the end, by the pictures)? They're layers or sewed together into one layer? If so, how? I just don't quite get it...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to aque-mizuhara [2008-07-09 14:33:01 +0000 UTC]
Haha! That is awesome! You can totally show her up with it
2.5 circles or two full circles - that means they're sewn together, end to end (like, when you cut the slit up them, and sew the two edges together, and then you have two circles, instead of one!) You just have to alter the formula a bit to make sure it isn't too big on you
If it's confusing, I can try to illustrate that part out, too~

aque-mizuhara In reply to taeliac [2008-07-10 08:18:08 +0000 UTC]
No, you don't have to ilustarte it, I get it, but... but thats... a lot of fabric O_O; I've talked with mom about the skirts, 'cause she's a tailor, and she told me half a circle is already a lot of it down there around the legs. Wouldn't it be hard to wear something like that?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
taeliac In reply to aque-mizuhara [2008-07-10 14:10:18 +0000 UTC]
Oh yeah! It's a huge amount of fabric, but many times, especially for cosplay, they have unreasonable amounts of fabric, to get a flowing effect, without the bulk at the waist. That's why I did the part on estimating fabric, because it is a shock when you have to buy 15 yards of fabric to make something, but many times, that effect is the "make or break" aspect of the costume, and it's definitely worth investing in
